legal system and encouraging diversity in the legal profession.

Message from the President
Dear Friends and Colleagues:
2006-2007 was a great year for the King County Bar Foundation. The highlight of our year was the Breakfast with
Champions. Bob Edwards, of NPR fame, spoke at what has become a signature event for the King County legal sector:
an opportunity for lawyers, judges and their friends to gather together for collegiality and to hear an engaging speaker.
Over the years, the Breakfast has featured Gloria Steinem, Sherman Alexie and Paul Rusesabagina, the real-life manager
of the Hotel Rwanda. In 2008, the Foundation will continue its tradition of presenting interesting speakers when best
selling author Scott Turow will speak on April 14, 2008. Save the date!
In 2006-2007, $1,097,000.00 was raised by the King County Bar Foundation. These funds were used to support our
efforts to increase diversity in the legal profession and provide legal assistance to persons in need.
For the second year in a row, the Foundation granted $125,000 to the University of Washington and Seattle University
Law Schools for minority law student scholarships. At our annual Bar Scholars Reception, I was able to meet many of
the scholarship recipients and I can attest that they are worthy of our support and will be wonderful additions to the legal
community when they graduate
Your support of our Community Legal Services Programs enabled over 1,600 attorneys to volunteer 23,689 hours of pro
bono legal services, worth more than $6,600,000. This means 9,560 people in King County received legal assistance
who may have had to go without, were it not for the involvement of our donors and volunteers.
Despite our successful year, the unmet need for legal services and support for efforts to increase diversity remains
substantial. We pledge to build on this year’s achievements and carry on our efforts to reach new records in
contributions and personal commitments of time and talent in the years ahead. In order to do this, we need your help
and participation.

Breakfast With Champions
Nearly 1,000 attorneys, judges, and friends of the King County Bar Foundation attended the
seventh annual Breakfast With Champions on Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at the Westin Hotel in
downtown Seattle. Over $300,000 dollars was raised in support of the Foundation’s pro bono
and diversity programs.
Bob Edwards, National Public Radio’s Morning Edition host for 25 years and current host of
XM Satellite Radio’s flagship program The Bob Edwards Show, delivered the keynote address.
Mr. Edwards’ words inspired the audience with a renewed passion for pro bono service by
commenting on the remarkable career of Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, considered
by many to be the grandfather of pro bono. Mr. Edwards strongly encouraged Breakfast guests
to get involved in civil legal aid service by volunteering their time and by donating to the
Foundation.
The program included a special highlight of the Foundation’s Minority Law Student Scholarship
Program. Every year, the Foundation grants funds to the University of Washington and Seattle
University law schools to assist both law schools with attracting outstanding students of color.
Last year, the Foundation awarded $125,000 for this purpose. Over 500 students have benefited
from the Foundation’s scholarship program and more than 50% of these students practice in
the King County area.
Breakfast guests, encouraged by the words of Foundation trustees Megan Wells and Paul
Mutty, made contributions in support of the Foundation’s pro bono legal services and diversity
programs. Last year, every dollar received by the Foundation resulted in $8.30 in legal services
or helped leverage an education for a minority law school student.
The Champion of Justice and the Champion of Diversity awards were presented to Fredric C. Tausend by the Honorable Ronald C.
Cox. Mr. Tausend was honored for his leadership in diversity and justice initiatives in the King County legal community, including
his spearheading of the development of the Future of the Law Institute, and his advocating for hiring, advancement, and retention of
minority lawyers in the local law firms.

Increasing Diversity in the Legal Profession
KCBF is committed to working at all steps of the “pipeline” - from high school to
the bar - to increase diversity in King County’s law offices and courtrooms.
The Future of the Law Institute (FLI)
FLI gives minority and economically disadvantaged high school students encouragement
and resources to pursue a career in law. Through an exciting two-day program of
workshops, career panels, lunch with judges, a mock trial and more, students are
introduced to the profession. The two-day event is followed by a year-long mentorship
program matching FLI students with lawyers, judges, and law students committed to
sharing their experience. FLI also provides summer internship opportunities in law firms
and courtrooms. Additionally, since 2003 FLI has distributed $7,000 in scholarships to
alumni attending two and four year universities.
Each year over 100 volunteers from the bar, bench and law schools participate in FLI programming. FLI has won awards for excellence and innovation from the American Bar Association, Minority Corporate Counsel Association, LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell Legal
Fellowship Foundation, and Asian Bar Association of Washington.
KCBF Minority Law Student Scholarships
KCBF is the largest single provider of minority law student
scholarships in Washington. In 2006-2007, KCBF distributed
$125,000 to the University of Washington and Seattle University
law schools for this purpose. Over 500 students have benefited
from this program since it began in 1970, with over half still
practicing in Washington.

2007 Bar Scholar Recipients
Building a Book of Business
Based on the premise that those minority attorneys who are
successful within law firms are more likely to stay, this program
helps minority associates in private practice improve their chances
for success. In a closed door dinner seminar, successful minority
lawyers instruct participants how to more effectively market
themselves and acquire new clients for their firms.
Ensuring Access to Justice
Domestic Revision Squad
Newcomers Resource Project
This project provides direct representation to domestic
violence survivors who seek reconsideration or revision
when DV Protection orders are erroneously denied.
Newcomers Resource Project provides community
workshops and free legal services on non-immigration civil
issues to newcomers, immigrants, and refugees who reside
in King County. Newcomers Resource Project partners with
Casa Latina to assist workers with wage claims
Family Law Mentor
Family Law Mentor provides free, direct representation to
low-income residents in contested dissolution or custody
cases where children are at risk.
Kinship Care Solutions Project
This project assists low-income relatives and others obtain
legal custody of children in their care. Volunteer attorneys
represent the caretakers in third party custody proceedings.
Homeless Project
Legal Services for the Homeless
provides free advice and assistance
with legal problems to individuals
who are homeless and currently using
shelter services. Several law firms and
King County Civil Division Deputy
Prosecutors each sponsor a local shelter.
Family Law Self-Help Plus
Self-Help Plus assists low and
moderate-income King County
residents file for uncontested
dissolution, child support
modifications, and minor parenting
plan modifications. Service is
provided on a sliding fee scale based
on client income.
Housing Justice Project
HJP provides free legal assistance to
King County residents facing the loss of
housing due to an eviction. The program
is located in Room W314 near the
ExParte department of the King County
Courthouse in Seattle and Room 1281
at the Regional Justice Center in Kent
-- open Monday-Friday 8:00-10:30 AM.
The Seattle office is also open from 4:006:00 PM on Monday and Wednesday
afternoons.
Volunteer Legal Services
VLS provides free direct
representation to low-income King
County residents on a broad array of
civil legal issues including housing,
debt, consumer, wills and estate
planning, special education, public
benefits, real estate foreclosures and
predatory lending.
Neighborhood Legal Clinics
27 Neighborhood Legal Clinics offer free legal half-hour
consultations on a wide range of issues to King County
residents, regardless of income. Our volunteer attorneys
help individuals understand their legal issues and provide
information and/or referrals.
Volunteer Attorneys for Persons with AIDS/HIV
& AIDS Legal Access
VAPWA/ALA provides free, reduced-fee and regularfee legal referrals to individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
Lawyers are available to assist clients in most areas of civil
law.
ALL PROGRAMS PROVIDE FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND ASL INTERPRETERS.
