Christine Constant came to Gateshead in
the 1980s to take up a Ceramics Residency
at Bensham Grove Pottery. Over the last
30 years Christine has enthused hundreds
through workshops, public art projects, Raku
pottery firings and teaching at colleges and
universities.
This exhibition brings together art work by
people Christine has worked with over the
years, shows some of her own ceramics and
photographs capturing the joy of making
from clay. Look out for the programme of
activities to get involved in pottery from
April - September.

ragtime through the hot dance and jazz music of the 1920s, to the early

Beccy Owen is a singer-songwriter with
several recorded albums. Born in Wales,
but now based in the NE, her first Pop-Up
Choir was on a Northumberland beach.
Her events are now very popular so early

previewing his new electric album recorded in Nashville. Close your

William Shield Festival: Lunchtime Concert

The Silver Shantymen’s repertoire includes many of the traditional tunes
Shields borrowed heavily from for his works. They feature songs
of the Napoleonic wars, American whaling ships, the Hebrides, songs
of humour, heart break and appalling conditions of the day.

William Shield Festival Concert: Rosina

The great musician and composer, William Shield was born in Swalwell 1748; he became Master
of the King’s Musick and principal violinist at the Royal Opera House. First performed in 1782,
Rosina tells of North East country folk. Performed by soloists from Rocket Opera, the William
Shield Chamber Orchestra led by Erardo Evans, Gateshead Civic Centre singers and Chase
Notes; directed by John Treherne. Evening includes a pre-performance talk by noted Shield
scholar, Amelie Addison.

Discovering Dodds: Viewing and
Tour
St Mary’s Heritage Centre
Friday 8 September, 4pm
In St Mary’s graveyard rests artisans and
characters. In 1907, local bookseller, Edwin
Dodds, catalogued all the graves then in
existence, taking photographs and adding
family history information to produce two
illustrated volumes. With Heritage Lottery
Funding, these books have been digitised.
Staff will help visitors explore them online
and in hard copy followed by a short guided
graveyard tour.
