DuPont Gulliver Rice Herbicide ™ DuPont Gulliver ™ ® Effective broad spectrum early post-emergent aquatic weed control in rice DuPont now has Gulliver® + MCPA 250 registered for use in New South Wales and Victoria. Gulliver® + MCPA 250 is the ideal option to manage Barnyard grass and problem broadleaf weeds such as Water Plantain, Dirty Dora, Starfruit Spikerush and Arrowhead from the four leaf stage right through to four stems. The combination of Gulliver® + MCPA 250 achieves greater weed control than either product used alone. ® The key to success with Gulliver® Gulliver® Herbicide + MCPA 250 (250 g/L sodium/potassium salt) Gulliver® applied in a tank mix combination with MCPA (250 g/L sodium / potassium salt) as a foliar application, is a new post-emergent herbicide treatment that offers many benefits for weed control in NSW & Vic rice crops: • Provides activity on both Barnyard grass and broadleaf weeds in one treatment. • Control of seedling Alisma & Water Plantain and suppression of Barnyard grass. • Control of the common broadleaf weeds Arrowhead, Dirty Dora, Spikerush & Starfruit. • Provides a second treatment/mode of action for Barnyard grass populations • The tank mix of Gulliver® + MCPA 250 provides robustness in weed control exceeding that achieved by Gulliver® or MCPA alone. • Combines two modes of action (Group B & Group I). • Has a wide application window from 4-5 leaf stage up to 3 tillered rice. • Can be applied by ground or aerial application. • Is very cost effective and can be used in low cost early post-emergent resistance management programs. • Provides greater flexibility in the timing and management of resistance programs for aquatic weeds in rice. DuPont rice team members Lance Loughrey and Ian Pearse inspecting some rice that has been sprayed with Gulliver® + MCPA 250. Environmental: Avoid spraying in still conditions and winds likely to cause drifts into adjacent sensitive crops or waterways or water bodies. Gulliver® has been extensively field tested in the process of being registered by the APVMA. This broad testing strategy has enabled DuPont to properly position Gulliver® as an important option for growers in the second or third pass stage of the rice management program. An application of Gulliver® + MCPA 250 at the critical four leaf to four stems stage will help manage weeds to maximise yield. Specific weed target stage • Spray Barnyard grass as early as possible (prefer 4-5 leaf through to first stem stage) while the weed is actually growing in aquatic conditions. • Spray Water Plantain after maximum germination has occurred (prefer early tillering stage). • Use the higher rate of MCPA 250 for high plant densities of broadleaf weeds and for areas where Group B resistant weed populations are expected (prefer 2-3 stems or shoots). • For best results ensure all weeds are 2/3 exposed. This may mean a delayed spray with a higher rate of MCPA. Examples of programs to effectively incorporate Gulliver® + MCPA 250. The robust and effective alternative to control more weeds to help the rice reach its full yield potential Most post-emergent foliage application programs will not control these weeds under the water. By delaying spray programs for a short period to ensure the plants are fully exposed you can use Gulliver® + MCPA 250 for effective weed control. Check off these key points prior to proceeding: Obtain and read the Gulliver® label for full product details before use and use as per label instruction. Use an alternative mode of action grass herbicide as a pre or at sowing treatment. Do not use on sod sown or drilled sown rice. Apply to small actively growing weeds. Lower water as per recommendations prior to spraying. Expose 2/3rds of each weed above the water prior to spraying. Weeds covered by water will not be controlled. Weeds shaded by dense foliage will not be controlled. Water depth at spraying should be 1-2 cm deep (Keep soil saturated at all times). Begin refilling bays 12 - 24 hours following spraying. Reach permanent levels within 2 days of spraying. Subsequent weed germination’s will not be controlled and will need appropriate management strategies. An application of Gulliver® + MCPA 250 tidied up a paddock of rice owned by Anthony O’Connor of Deniliquin. Mr O’Connor said the paddock was a newly bought block that was planted on November 9 last season. “We though we would have a Barnyard grass problem so hit it with Ordram and then followed up with some Londax®”. High numbers of Water Plantain and Dirty Dora in the paddock led to a followup application of Gulliver® + MCPA 250 on January 4. “It was a tidy-up job to catch the Plantain before it seeded. As a package Gulliver® + MCPA 250 did a good job and we didn’t experience any burning on the crop. Anthony O’Connor Deniliquin Barnyard grass that had advanced to the stage where it was one metre high and above the rice crop was controlled well on the property of Matt Duffy of “Stanfield” Deniliquin. Mr Duffy said the paddock had been freshly lasered with new top-soil and was treated with Ordram and Taipan early in the season. An application of Gulliver® on the tall Barnyard grass controlled the weed. “It surprised me,” Mr Duffy said. “I thought I was going to have to turn the water off.” He said the control of the Barnyard grass was an investment in years to come.
