PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Plants can make their own
energy through sunlight
They use chlorophyl, a green
pigment, that is found in
chloroplasts to capture
sunlight

SUNLIGHT TO SUGAR
The chloroplast uses sunlight, water and carbon
dioxide (CO2) to make glucose (C6H12O6)
The plant can store the sugars it makes in a vacuole

PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Plants get water from their roots and carbon dioxide
from the atmosphere
They produce oxygen as a waste product which
animals use for respiration
Only plants go through photosynthesis

CELLULAR RESPIRATION
Both plants and animals go through respiration
Cellular respiration is the way we break down
glucose to make energy

RESPIRATION AND THE
MITOCHONDRIA
Cellular respiration happens in the mitochondria
This process starts with glucose (which animals have
to eat and plants can make through photosynthesis)
Respiration can use other molecules to make energy,
not just glucose
The other starting material is oxygen (animal get this
by breathing)

RESPIRATION MAKES
ENERGY
In the mitochondria, the glucose is broken down into
energy (ATP)
Our cells use ATP to do work

RESPIRATION
BYPRODUCTS
During respiration the waste products are carbon
dioxide (CO2) and water
The plants will use the carbon dioxide we make (in
the atmosphere) to start photosynthesis

RESPIRATION IN PLANTS
The glucose that the plant makes during
photosynthesis CANNOT be used as energy
Plants also have to break down their glucose during
respiration to get usable energy
So plants have to use both processes
