November 13, 2016 WE ARE LIVING IN AN AGE BETWEEN OUR LORD'S FIRST COMING AND HIS LAST COMING. Jesus has inaugurated the new era by His Life, Death, Resurrection and Ascension, by the sending of His Spirit. Our life during this era is to prepare ourselves to welcome Him when He comes again in glory. In the 1st reading, we find the Prophet Malachi warning the people of his time that the Lord’s arrival is near, and that He will gather the nations for judgment. He also promises that God will reverse the situation – first, he will destroy the proud, never more to be remembered … and second, he will uphold the cause of the humble and faithful, that their names always will be remembered. In today’s gospel, Jesus anticipates this day and cautions us not to be deceived, and making His apostles aware of the signs that will come to pass before the end times. We read in the scriptures of famines and earthquakes and the desolation of the Temple and the destruction of Jerusalem by a foreign power. Jesus reminds his apostles that Jerusalem will be stripped of its glory because of its disobedience, laxity and unfaithfulness. This prophesy got fulfilled in the year 70 AD when the Romans destroyed Jerusalem, and mercilessly slaughtered thousands of Jews on her streets. These "signs" then, show us the pattern for the Church's life as well. Especially during the persecution of Christians in the New Testament era when believers were imprisoned and put to death, testifying to their faith with wisdom in the Spirit. Let us not forget that we, too, live in a world of nations and kingdoms at war. And like the apostles and the martyrs of the early church, we must persevere in the face of unbelieving relatives and friends, and forces and authorities hostile to God and us. The question is, are we ready to sing His praises, joyfully proclaim His coming as Lord and King, even amidst difficult times? Let us then pray for God’s grace to endure the difficult times with unwavering faith, undying hope in our hearts, Fr. Michael and untiring charity, awaiting the coming of Christ.
