(SW 113) 127 LESSON INTRODUCTION ADVENTURES IN THE SPREAD OF GOD’S MESSAGE Acts 4:23–31 Background Lesson Target We must begin with prayer. Just as Peter and John chose to be bold witnesses for Jesus, we also can ask God to give us courage to share our faith with others. Lesson Setting Acts focuses on the beginnings of the church, so it reminds us that Jesus appointed power from on high to help the apostles be His witnesses to the ends of the earth. The pagan world would certainly oppose them, so the message that Christ had risen and believers would be saved had to be fueled by prayer. In this core Bible story, Peter and John had been brought in front of the authorities because they had healed a man who couldn’t walk. These religious authorities didn’t believe that Jesus was God’s Son, so they wanted to know how Peter and John healed the man, and they wanted to keep them quiet. But Peter and John told them that they would rather obey God and keep speaking about Jesus. When they were released, they returned to the other apostles to pray for protection and boldness. The whole place shook and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Note that it was at this time that the apostles began speaking about personal salvation (Acts 4:12). This story is not about rebellion against the authorities, but rather about staying true to Jesus’ calling. Teacher Helps Scriptures • Matthew 28:16-20—the Great Commission of Jesus • Acts 1:8—Jesus promising the Holy Spirit and sending His disciples • Romans 1:16—the gospel is God’s power for salvation • John 15:16—witnessing for Jesus is bearing fruit Biblical Concepts Witnessing, the power of prayer, the Holy Spirit’s guidance 128 © 2016 Dean-o REPLAY, Inc. LESSON CONNECTION ADVENTURES IN THE SPREAD OF GOD’S MESSAGE Week 3 This Week’s Connection Core Bible Story & Bible Passage In Acts 4:19–20, the religious leaders forbade Peter and John from fulfilling the mission Jesus had given them: spreading the word that God had raised Jesus from the dead to provide forgiveness of sins. The two apostles replied wisely: “Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight to obey you rather than God.” The religious leaders of course knew people must always obey God rather than people. But the religious leaders didn’t believe God had spoken to the apostles even though they’d performed an amazing miracle as evidence: healing a man 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. So they threatened Peter and John with punishment if they kept talking about Jesus’ resurrection. The apostles said they couldn’t help speaking about what they’d seen and heard. The core Bible story tells us what happened next. The religious leaders released Peter and John. When they rejoined the other believers, all the believers prayed together. They glorified God, asked Him to consider the threats, and asked Him to help them all speak with great boldness. Like these believers, when we share the gospel with others, we can pray for the Holy Spirit’s help and for boldness. “Talkin’ up Jesus” means telling the people around us about Jesus Christ. “Speed of Sound” is from Acts 4:19–20 where God’s Word was spoken boldly. It’s important to pray for those we speak to so the truth “catches on.” Once we receive eternal life, we can’t help speaking about it! Turning the world “upside-down” means turning it back to God—where it belongs. If we pray for opportunities, God will give us a chance to share His Son. “Speed of Sound” focuses on reaching those who haven’t heard the message yet. Jesus should be on the tip of our tongues seven days a week! Peter and John were on a mission to get the message of Christ out into the street. Peter and John were actual eyewitnesses of what Jesus did and said. Peter and John could not stop speaking about what they had seen and heard. The best way for Peter and John to spread the good news was to speak about Jesus. Our hope is that the message is heard and lives are changed. Believers can turn the world upside down (change it) with the gospel. The subject God wants us to speak boldly about is our faith. 129 MONDAY SURF ADVENTURES IN THE SPREAD OF GOD’S MESSAGE Core Bible Story Acts 4:23–31 The Believers Pray for Boldness of Speech On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. 24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “You made the heaven and earth and the sea, and everything in them. 25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: ‘Why do the nations rage / and the peoples plot in vain? / 26 The kings of the earth take their stand / and the rulers gather together / against the Lord / and against his Anointed One.’ 23 Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. 28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. 29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. 30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” 31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. 27 Acts 3:1–10 and Acts 4:1–31 Draw a line from each word or phrase on the left to the definition on the right that matches its meaning in the core Bible story. LESSON CONNECTION ADVENTURES IN THE SPREAD OF GOD’S MESSAGE Week 4 This Week’s Connection Core Bible Story & Bible Passage In the core Bible story, the religious leaders were offended by what Peter and John said about Jesus. They had rejected Jesus and conspired against Him because Jesus didn’t respect their teachings the way they wanted Him to. Jesus told the Sadducees that they were wrong to teach that there was no resurrection from the dead, and now here Peter and John were preaching that God had resurrected Jesus. Jesus told the Pharisees they were wrong to teach that following their oral traditions made them good people, and now Peter and John were preaching that they needed to have their sins forgiven ONLINE HIGHLIGHTS © 2016 Dean-o REPLAY, Inc. It was also hard for these religious leaders to believe the message because doing so meant that they had committed a great wrong by arranging for Jesus’ death. When we share the gospel, we must boldly tell people the message of Acts 4:12: “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” Some people are offended by this message. That’s why we must begin with prayer. The “He” in this song is Jesus. Only He can save you. Jesus got it done. He died and rose for all of us. Religion tries to earn eternal life, but Jesus gave it as a gift. Eternal life can only be found in Jesus’ name. The word “one” is the key. There is only one God. No other God will hear you pray because there is no other god. The world claims many ways to heaven. Jesus said there is one. Peter was filled with the Spirit when he told the elders he would not stop speaking about Jesus. Man tries clever ways of making it to heaven, but only the true God saves us. Salvation is found only in Jesus’ name. God has given the matchless name of His Son to be known among men. We must be saved (rescued) from our sins to enter into heaven. We receive salvation when we are delivered from sin. No matter what the world says, there is only one God. There is only one God, and one Son of God. 137 MONDAY SURF ADVENTURES IN THE SPREAD OF GOD’S MESSAGE Core Bible Story Acts 4:23–31 The Believers Pray for Boldness of Speech On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. / 26 The kings of the earth take their stand / and the rulers gather together / against the Lord / and against his Anointed One.’ 23 TEACHING OBJECTIVE Review or continue the core Bible story to help students know and believe its meaning. TUESDAY SURF ADVENTURES IN THE SPREAD OF GOD’S MESSAGE Bible Passage 16 Exploration and Discovery Acts 4:12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. Scripture Study Acts 4:12 Application Activity MATTHEW 1:21 “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” JOHN 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him. ACTS 10:43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name. With a partner, read these passages: Matthew 1:21; John 3:36; Acts 10:43. What main idea do these verses share? These verses share the main idea that salvation is found in no one but Jesus because He was sent by God to save His people from their sins through forgiveness in His name. TEACHING OBJECTIVE Teach the weekly Bible passage to help students grasp the main idea. TEACHING ACTIVITIES 1. Explore Scripture Let students read the passage as you share background and discuss the main idea. 2. Scripture Study Students look up Scripture in their Bibles and cross-reference to increase understanding of Bible passage. With a partner, students read and evaluate. 3. Salvation is Found in No One Else Read Acts 4:12 and remind students that salvation is found only in Jesus. Facilitate a discussion and ask for student input on things people think will save them, but really don’t. A few ideas include: I’m a good person, I was baptized, I do good deeds, I go to church, and I bring an offering to church. How do these verses help us understand Acts 4:12? These verses help us understand the declaration from Acts 4:12 that salvation is found in no one else. He was sent to deliver eternal life from God, provide the forgiveness of sins, and save His people. Challenge: Why will people who reject the Son of God not see eternal life? Acts 4:12 and the related Scriptures above teach us that people who reject the Son of God will not see eternal life because wrath still remains on them. Since all of us are born into this world with sin, God’s judgment is on us unless we believe that He sent His Son to forgive this sin. God is the one true God who offers salvation not through our efforts, but through believing that He can save us through His Son. Salvation is Found in No One Else Read Acts 4:12. After your class discussion on things people think will save them, but really don’t, fill out the chart below. Things people think save them, but really don’t I’m a good person, I was baptized, I do good deeds, I go to church, I bring an offering to church, etc. © 2016 Dean-o REPLAY, Inc. All rights reserved. Bible Passage 16 Exploration and Discovery TEACHING ACTIVITIES 1. Explore Scripture Let students read the passage as you share background and discuss the main idea. Acts 4:12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. 2. Memory Verse Game While in a circle, students guess the next word of the verse. Teacher starts by saying, “Acts 4:12.” The first student says, “Salvation”; next, “is”; next, “found”; etc. A student who misses is out and the next person guesses the same word. Keep going in a circle until there is one person left. Last person states the verse location (Acts 4:12) and the following person is out. Afterwards, students will try to write the verse from memory. Memory Verse Game 1. After playing the Memory Verse Game with your class, write out Acts 4:12. Cover the verse (don’t peek) and write it out from memory here. Same as verse above. 2. Rewrite the verse correctly. If you already wrote it correctly, rewrite it in your own words. Answers will vary. Begin with Prayer 3. Begin with Prayer Discuss with your class and ask for student input on how they might pray before sharing the gospel with others. Prayer suggestions may include asking: for boldness, to be filled by His Holy Spirit, for the hearts of unbelievers to be softened, for God to be glorified, and for humility. According to Acts 4:12, we should be bold in telling people about Jesus because salvation is found in no one else. First Corinthians 1:18 tells us that the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. Some people are offended by God’s message, which is why we should always begin with prayer. Write a prayer that you could offer to God before sharing Jesus with others. Answers will vary. 4.
