For this year’s Concours, a 1950 Diedt, formerly owned by Eddie “Rochester” Anderson, the comedic actor most famous for his work as Rochester on the “Jack Benny Show,” will be on display. Anderson was also an active participant in the Sports Car Club of America racing circles in the 1950s. Wanting a car that would be competitive on the track but also street legal, he hired noted racecar fabricator Emil Diedt to build a car. Diedt is best known for his work on several Indy 500 cars. The car, currently owned by Jim Weddle of St. Louis, is built on a tubular chassis and is powered by a 331-‐cubic-‐inch overhead valve Cadillac engine and six Stromberg 97 carburetors. Anderson raced the car until the early 1960s. It changed hands twice before 1970, when it was abandoned on a flatbed trailer. In 2002, the car was rediscovered, and a complete restoration was begun. Today, the car sports the same two-‐tone paint scheme originally applied to the hand-‐formed all-‐aluminum body. It was featured in Road & Track Magazine and Popular Mechanics in 1951 and exhibited at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Rare 1921 Sunbeam Model 24 Roadster to be exhibited at 2013 Art of the Car Concours A 1921 Sunbeam Model 24 Roadster will be making an appearance at the Seventh Annual Art of the Car Concours on June 23. Manufactured in Wolverhampton, England, the car is one of only about 600 built between 1920 and 1923. The vehicle was owned by Harrah’s Reno, Nev., Museum from 1962 to 1986, when Whitney Kerr Sr., the well-‐known Kansas City commercial realtor of Prairie Village, Kan., purchased it. In 1922, the chassis was sent to the United States by Dario Resta, a well-‐known auto racer. He had the all-‐aluminum Fleetwood body installed. According to Kerr, there are only about 12 of the Model 24s known to exist, and this is the only known Fleetwood-‐bodied roadster with a rear Dickey seat. The car and its very unusually-‐designed 4.5-‐liter, 6-‐cylinder cast-‐in-‐block, seven-‐
main-‐bearing engine has just completed an extensive restoration. Racing legends Sir Stirling Moss and Denise McCluggage to appear at Seventh Annual Art of the Car Concours Five underwriters to date have provided $5,000 each to offset the expense of bringing Sir Stirling Moss and Denise McCluggage, two global icons, to the 2013 Art of the Car Concours as a “once in a lifetime” opportunity. There will be multiple events Friday through Sunday built around their visit. A private dinner has been scheduled with Moss and his wife and McCluggage with the underwriters and their guests on Friday night, June 21. Anyone interested in helping underwrite the events and attend the Friday night dinner should contact Marshall Miller at [email protected]. Noted writer and automotive historian Michael T. Lynch will be Concours announcer Michael Lynch, an internationally-‐recognized automotive author, journalist and historian, has agreed to serve as announcer for the 2013 Art of the Car Concours. He will also serve as a consultant on several additional Concours projects. Lynch graduated from Shawnee Mission High School before graduating from Harvard. He lives in San Francisco. It’s a role he has played at many similar events, according to Concours founder Marshall Miller, including the Concorso Italiano, the Desert Classic Concours, the Quail Motorcycle Gathering and many more. Lynch became known in the 1970s for his work and numerous articles on the history of Ferrari racecars. In 1998, he co-‐authored the book “American Sports Car Racing in the 1950s” with William Edgar and Ron Parravano, considered the definitive work of the era. Lynch is a member of the Competition Car Classification Committee of the Antique Automobile Club of America. He also consults for the Revs Program at Stanford University. In addition to his work for VeloceToday.com, Lynch has also written more than 60 articles for Road &Track, Automobile Magazine, Sports Car International, Cavallino, Forza and Vintage Motorsport. Free close-‐in parking, shuttle service for Concours available at UMKC garage—50th and Oak streets Last year’s five sites for free parking have been consolidated into one new, large 1,500 space enclosed covered parking lot. Free parking for the Art of the Car Concours will be available at the University of Missouri-‐Kansas City parking garage located at the southeast corner of 50th and Oak streets, just two blocks south of the Concours. The garage offers three entrances and three elevators. Also available will be a free shuttle service running throughout the day of the event between the garage and the Kanas City Art Institute campus. Parking also will be available for a fee at the Nelson-‐Atkins Museum of Art garage adjacent to the Concours site. Exhibitors with trailers have a new parking option for 2013. There are a significant number of enclosed indoor secure trailer parking areas in the garage on the first floor. “We know of no other Concours that offers such an opportunity,” said Art of the Car Concours founder Marshall Miller. For more information about exhibitor trailer parking, contact Kit Lindsay at [email protected]. Deadline for exhibitor applications extended to March 15 due to Midwestern snowstorms The deadline for exhibitor applications for the Seventh Annual Art of the Car Concours is quickly approaching. More than 20 percent of the applications received in 2013 are first-‐
time exhibitors. No similar Concours is held in Chicago, Denver, Dallas or St. Louis. An increasing number of exhibitors and visitors will be attending this year. Anyone interested in showing a vehicle at this year’s event has until March 15 to submit an application. The deadline has been extended because of the recent snowstorms that have hit the Midwest. To confirm if your vehicle qualifies for the event and to download an exhibitor application, visit www.kcai.edu/events/special-‐events/art-‐car-‐concours. There is a $100 application fee. Entry is open to vintage automobiles, motorcycles, trucks, antique bicycles, fire trucks and racecars of exhibition quality. Vehicles newer than 1976 generally are not considered for the Concours. Volunteer opportunities available for Art of the Car Concours Volunteer opportunities remain for the Seventh Annual Art of the Car Concours events, scheduled for Saturday, June 22, and Sunday, June 23. Download the volunteer application form, fill it out and return it to [email protected] if you are interested. Volunteers will be invited to attend several training sessions during the spring, prior to the Concours, to help better organize the event and make the day’s activities interesting and rewarding for exhibitors, sponsors, guests and you. If you have previously volunteered at the Concours and have suggestions for improvements, please let us know. We look forward to working with you in 2013.
