COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD
PRESS RELEASE
For immediate distribution Canadian premiere for HIERONYMUS BOSCH: THE GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS
Marie Chouinard was invited to create this choreographic work by the Jheronimus
Bosch 500 Foundation, which this year commemorates the 500th anniversary of the
death of the famous Dutch painter. The world premiere took place on August 4 at the
Theaterfestival Boulevard in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, the painter’s birthplace.
The work was also acclaimed at the Festival Veranos de la Villa in Madrid, the ImPulsTanz
Vienna International Dance Festival, the Operaestate Festival Veneto in Bassano del
Grappa and, most recently, the MilanOltre Festival and the Cultuurcentrum in Bruges.
“A picture theater! And an extraordinary one at that! […] Chouinard successfully pulls
off the feat of actually bringing the Bosch triptych to life. […] Magnificent, delightful, but
also startlingly well performed by the excellent and versatile dancers of the Compagnie
Marie Chouinard. A picture theater that brings us a new vision of the work (works) of
Hieronymus Bosch.” - Dina Ruttle, Tanzchrift, Vienna, August 2016.
This work in three acts for ten dancers, lasting 75 minutes, presents the three panels of
the triptych The Garden of Earthly Delights:
Act 1: The Garden of Earthly Delights (central panel);
Act 2: Hell (right panel);
Act 3: Paradise (left panel).
“Just as a choreographer can start with a piece of music in order to create, I am starting with the painting by Bosch. And just as a
choreographer can choose to “stick” to a musical score (or not), I have chosen to “stick” to Bosch’s painting, its spirit. The joy of bowing
before a masterpiece!” - Marie Chouinard.
