Bloom’s Taxonomy Questions To Kill a Mockingbird Purpose of Strategy: This activity gets the students thinking about events and characters from the chapter(s) on all six levels using Bloom’s Taxonomy questions. They are accountable for not only knowing the information, but understanding it and being able to compare it as well. Directions: Give each student these questions to work on after reading chapters 30-31 of the book. Give them about fifteen minutes to finish the questions, and have them share their alternative ending with a partner (optional). Assessment: This exercise is instrumental in getting the students thinking on deeper levels with the text. It requires time and serious contemplation about what they’ve read and how they feel personally. The combination is strong and effective in learning more through the book. Bloom’s Taxonomy Questions To Kill a Mockingbird Chapters 30-31 Knowledge 1. Who did Scout walk home after the events took place? (Answer: Boo Radley) Comprehension 2. Discuss what reasons she had for walking this person home. Why did she do that? (Answer: She wanted to thank him, know him better, understand him more) Application 3. Write about a time in your life when you misjudged someone. How did you feel when you realized you were wrong? What did you do to fix your prior actions? (Answer will depend on students’ experiences) Analysis 4. Compare and contrast the attitude that Scout had towards Boo during their first encounter vs. her attitude during their last encounter in the book. What were the changes that took place? How had Scout changed? How did Boo change, or did he at all? (Answers will vary, but should be parallel with the idea that Scout had misjudged Boo, and her heart was softened by the end of the book towards him. Boo was the same person, but was more understood at the end.) Synthesis 5. Why do you think Boo saved Jem and Scout? Do you believe that Boo cared about them, or was he trying to be heroic? Why? Do you believe that Jem or Scout would have done the same for him at the time? Why or why not? (Answers will vary) Evaluation 6. What would have happened if Boo had not shown up in the school yard that night? Write an alternative ending in which Boo does not show up at the school yard, but someone else instead (ie: Tom Robinson).
