STUDY GUIDE: Possessive Nouns

Know these rules:
1. SINGULAR POSESSIVES: To form a singular possessive noun,
add an
‘s to the end of the word.
examples: cat – cat’s
boy- boy’s
child – child’s
*Chris – Chris’s bicycle
2. PLURAL POSSESSIVES: To form a plural possessive noun, first turn
the word into a plural. Then, follow the rules for the apostrophe
placement:
Add
‘s to the plural forms that DO NOT end in s
Example: children – children’s
geese – geese’s
Add
‘ to the end of plural nouns that end in S:
Example: house - houses – houses’
boy- boys- boys’
Now look through your practice worksheets to find examples of words
that “tricked” you, or you found difficult. Write the singular possessive,
plural, and plural possessive forms for practice. Be sure to check the
placement of the apostrophe!
