Trinity Area has partnered with Chevron once
again to enhance the K-8 science program.
Trinity will receive a generous grant for
$110,000 dollars to provide students with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and
Mathematics) experiences through Project Lead the Way.
“Project Lead the Way students engage in hands-on activities, projects, and problems that are reflective
of real-world challenges. This compelling, real-world approach empowers students to learn essential, indemand skills validated by the world’s leading companies, while also providing an invaluable connection
between what students are learning in the classroom today and how it applies to the paths they’ll take in
the future.” (PLTW)
Specifically, this grant will provide our students and teachers with iPads and Android Tablets to navigate
through several STEAM science units. It will also provide extensive professional development for our
STEAM teachers. The grant provides hands-on resources to help engage students as well.
At the elementary schools, students will be provided iPads to explore different interactive modules. They
will also enjoy new hands-on learning opportunities to get them excited about STEAM. The students will
participate in lessons to help solve real-world problems. They will learn to think like engineers.
This grant will enable the Middle School to offer two new exciting courses for the 17-18 school year. One
course is entitled App Creators. “This unit will expose students to computer science by computationally
analyzing and developing solutions to authentic problems through mobile app development, and will
convey the positive impact of the application of computer science to other through programing.” (PLTW)
The second course is called Computer Science for Innovators and Makers. “This unit will allow students
to discover computer science concepts and skills by creating personally relevant, tangible, and shareable
projects. Throughout the unit, students will learn about programming for the physical world by blending
hardware design and software development. They will design and develop a physical computing device,
interactive art installation, or wearable, and plan and develop code for micro-controllers that bring their
physical designs to life.” (PLTW)
STEAM Competition
On March 3rd eight Trinity students participated in the Shaler
High School STEAM Competition. The students built a bike
that could be driven by a blindfolded driver. They completed
the obstacle course in two minutes and 42 seconds. The girls
participated in several mini competitions as well. Students
participated in a Hummingbird Kit Challenge, a Float a Brick
Challenge, a Keith Haring Thermography Painting, and a
Solubility Puzzle. Our Trinity girls took first place at the
Solubility Puzzle Challenge. They correctly identified all the
mystery solutes in the solution and did it at the quickest rate.

Ahead… Trinity West’s fifth grade
students programmed their Edison Robot to be
clap controlled when driving, as well as to
avoid obstacles, track lines and then follow a
torch (flashlight). They all took part in a fun
class activity in which everyone’s robot
executed the same program at a slightly
different time. The result is similar to a
Mexican wave or choreographed dance.

To celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday,
students at Trinity East
participated in a variety of
activities related to several of his
most popular titles. A different
book was enjoyed each day to
practice reading skills at every
level. Guest readers from the
Trinity Leadership Committee at
the high school visited and shared
many fun stories with our
students. The highlight of the
week was a book drive. Students
were encouraged to donate new
or gently used books for local
schools and organizations in
need. We collected a total of 900
books!
Trinity West kindergarten students
listened to many of Dr. Seuss’s
most famous works, and completed
several correlating reading and
math activities. The children read
with third grade students, ate green
eggs and ham, and enjoyed
viewing Horton Hears a Who while
wearing their own Horton
ears. It was a Seusstastic
week!
Arabella, a junior, from the high school
visited Mrs. Wagner’s class at Trinity
East to be a guest reader and share
some Dr. Seuss stories.
The students made and enjoyed eating
green eggs and ham. They graphed
data.; 16 tried and liked the eggs and
ham, 7 did not like green
eggs and ham and 1
refused to try them.
Ms. Cook’s third grade
reading classes celebrated
the birthday of Dr. Seuss by
reading books, singing an
alliteration song, and
creating their own
alliteration posters. The
students learned the skill of
alliteration using books
written by Dr. Seuss.

Mrs. Koppes’s technology
students participated in Read
Across America week by
creating projects based on Dr.
Seuss’s books. The best
projects are in display in the
main hallways at Trinity West
and South.
Mrs. Biagini’s kindergarten class at Trinity East had a
blast celebrating Read Across America Week! The
students read Dr. Seuss classics and participated in a
number of fun activities, including making a Cat in the
Hat Glyph, eating green eggs and ham, and painting
crazy socks, collecting data & graphing the most
interesting styles.
The students at Trinity North enjoyed a day of guest
readers. Members from the community as well as
members from the district visited and
read to the students as part of their Read Across
America week.
Oh, the places you’ll go, swimming with one fish, two fish, cats in hats…Oh my! What fun Mrs. Johnson’s second
grade at Trinity East had doing many activities throughout Read Across America week. Some the of the activities
the students participated in was listened to guest readers from the high school, wrote about their creative fish,
drew about where they would love to go, dressed as Cat in the Hat and made Cat in the Hat treats. What a fun
week of learning it was!

The Varsity Swim Team worked with Mrs. Bockstoce’s second grade at
Trinity South to create synonym and antonym shamrocks, and to write
about what they would do if they were the president. The swimmers also
joined the students in gym class and helped Mr. Trusler with various
motor activities.
Smiles for Life
In recognition of Dental Awareness
Month students from Penn Commercial’s
LPN program gave presentations on
dental hygiene at Trinity North.
Students played dental Jeopardy, read
books, and learned the proper way to
brush and floss their teeth. The LPN
students discussed which foods were
best to eat to prevent decay, how
sugary foods can cause decay, and the
importance of fluoride.

The Family Consumer Science and the Industrial
Technology departments have been working on a
cross-curricular project. Mr. Crissman, with
student teacher Devin Pindroh, and Mrs. Aliveto,
with Junior Cameron Rogers, made a game of
cornhole for the cafeteria. For the past few
weeks, the four have been working to sew, build,
paint, and polyurethane this game for all to
enjoy. The students at Trinity North Elementary celebrated Random Acts of Kindness Week
from February 11 – 17. They performed various acts of kindness throughout the
school to bring caring, compassion and respect to one another. Each day, students
were chosen to have their acts of kindness announced to the school, as well as put
on the kindness bulletin board. Even though the RAK Week is over, we hope the
students continue to think about being kinder to help make a better world. Pictured
are some of the kindest students at Trinity North Elementary.

SOFTBALL? TWIST, Inc. is an all-volunteer, non-profit program that organizes and supervises softball leagues
and teams for girls between the ages of 4 and 16. The TWIST complex is comprised of six fields at the top of the
Washington Park. All fields have fences and bleachers and two have electric scoreboards. Five of the fields have
concrete dugouts and two of the fields have lights. There are two concession stands with electric and water and
an indoor restroom facility at the complex. There are no admission fees for games and no pass-the-hat
collections.
For girls born between 1/1/10 and 12/31/12, TWIST offers a 6 & Under Instructional Slow Pitch League that
primarily plays on Saturday or Sunday afternoons in May and June at the TWIST complex in the Washington
Park. Reduced injury factor softballs are used in this league and girls have a choice of letting their coach pitch to
them or hitting off a batting tee. All girls get plenty of playing time in this league. There are no won-loss records,
no playoffs and no trophies for this league, but all players get a team t-shirt and visor to keep and receive a
participation medal and ribbon at a year-end pizza party. The registration fee for this league only is $35.
TWIST also offers a participatory 9 & Under, 12 & Under, and 16 & Under Slow Pitch League that provides
competition between various teams. All girls get plenty of playing time and all games are played at the
Washington Park. In these leagues, won-loss records are kept, play-offs are held at the end of the season and
trophies are awarded to members of the top three teams. Participation trophies are awarded in the 9 & Under

are non-refundable after players are placed onto teams. No girl will be denied participation because of economic
hardship. New registrants need to bring proof of date of birth. The signature of a parent or guardian is required.
TWIST also offers a recreational Fast Pitch in 12& Under and 15 & Under age groups. These teams play in a
local traveling league, with home games played at the TWIST fields. Games and practices will primarily be
