There are seven euro banknotes: €5, €10, €20, €50, €100, €200 and €500. An upgraded €5 banknote, the first in the new Europa series, is circulating alongside the original €5 and will gradually replace it. The other denominations will also be replaced in the coming years. All euro banknotes are easy to check using the feellooktilt method: 1 2 €2 The European side €1 LOOK Watermark – against the light the value and a window become visible. The watermark in the new €5 includes a portrait of Europa. Security thread – against the light a dark line becomes visible. 3 The euro coins range from 1 cent to €2. Each has a “European” side and a “national” side. FEEL The paper is crisp and firm. Raised print – the main image, the lettering and the large value numeral feel thicker. The new €5 also has short raised lines on the left and right edges. TILT Front of the banknote: Emerald number – on the new €5 an effect of the light moves up and down the number. The number also changes colour from emerald green to deep blue. Hologram – on the €5, €10 and €20 the value and a € symbol appear. The hologram in the new €5 includes a portrait of Europa. On the €50, €100, €200 and €500 the value and a window or doorway appear. Back of the banknote: Glossy stripe – it is on the €5, €10 and €20 of the first series and shows the value and the € symbol. Colour-changing number – the number on the €50, €100, €200 and €500 changes colour from purple to olive green or brown. LATVIA ADOPTS THE EURO 50 cent 20 cent 10 cent 5 cent The European side shows either the EU before its enlarge ment in May 2004 or a geographical image of Europe. The national side varies from country to country. Despite these differences, you can use euro coins anywhere in the euro area. Latvia is adopting the euro on New Year’s Day 2014. It will be a historic day for the country and for the European Union. Latvia will then have the same currency as 17 other European countries. Until 14 January 2014 you will still be able to pay in lats, but thereafter you can only pay in euro. 302 post offices will exchange lats at the fixed exchange rate, free of charge, until 31 March 2014. Banks will do the same until 30 June 2014. There is no limit on the amount of lats you can exchange. Thereafter, Latvijas Banka will exchange unlimited amounts of lats banknotes and coins for an indefinite period. Please remember that euro banknotes and coins will become the sole legal tender on 15 January 2014. The national side Latvia’s €1 and €2 coins coin feature an image of a Latvian folk maiden. The 50, 20 and 10 cent coins show the large coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia and the 5, 2 and 1 cent coins show the Republic’s small coat of arms.
