There are seven euro banknotes: €5, €10, €20, €50, €100, €200 and
€500. An upgraded €5 banknote, the first in the new Europa series,
is circulating alongside the original €5 and will gradually replace it.
The other denominations will also be replaced in the coming years.
All euro banknotes are easy to check using the feellooktilt
method:

The paper is crisp and firm.
Raised print – the main image, the lettering and the
large value numeral feel thicker. The new €5 also has
short raised lines on the left and right edges.

On the €50, €100, €200 and €500 the value and a

Back of the banknote:
Glossy stripe – it is on the €5, €10 and €20 of the first

Latvia is adopting the euro on New Year’s Day 2014. It will be a
historic day for the country and for the European Union. Latvia will
then have the same currency as 17 other European countries.
Until 14 January 2014 you will still be able to pay in lats, but
thereafter you can only pay in euro. 302 post offices will exchange
lats at the fixed exchange rate, free of charge, until 31 March 2014.
Banks will do the same until 30 June 2014. There is no limit on the
amount of lats you can exchange. Thereafter, Latvijas Banka will
exchange unlimited amounts of lats banknotes and coins for an
indefinite period.
Please remember that euro banknotes and coins will become the
sole legal tender on 15 January 2014.
This guide to euro banknotes and coins has been published
