After years of bad leadership, England’s King John
faced a possible rebellion by the nation’s barons.
•He was forced to limit some of his power when
the barons made him sign the Magna Carta in
1215.

• The Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock and wrote the Mayflower
Compact before they stepped off the ship in 1620.
• They developed a self-government that did not rely on the king of
England.
• Their new government was a democracy. The people (AKA: white
men) were in control of the Plymouth government.
• They used a policy of majority rule to make laws for the colony.

the idea of separation of powers.
• Separation of powers is the idea that no one branch of
government should control all of the power in a
government.

• Parliament is the law making body of the British
government.
• It is made up of two houses, the House of Lords and
the House of Commons.

Burgesses in 1619.
• The House of Burgesses was the first representative government in
the colonies.

• The writers of the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut also limited
the power of their government officials.
• The governor of Connecticut was limited to a two year term.

• The English Bill of Rights was written in 1689.
• The U.S. Bill of Rights was written in 1791.
• The U.S. Bill of Rights gets some of its ideas from the English Bill of
Rights.
• One of those ideas is the use of a court system that uses trial by jury.
