Interdisciplinary Studies The College of Humanities and Social Sciences supervises the program of studies leading to the Bachelor of Science degree major in Interdisciplinary Studies. The Interdisciplinary Studies degree offers the student a broad based, flexible curriculum in the arts and sciences so that the individual may design a course of study to meet his or her interests and needs, both personal and career-oriented. At the lower level (freshman and sophomore level), the Interdisciplinary Studies student receives a solid foundation in the arts and sciences. Students completing the courses from the Core Requirements may have some hours that apply for an Associate of Arts from the Lone Star College System. A maximum of 66 hours may transfer from a community college. In addition to these core requirements, students take courses in three broadly defined clusters of the arts and sciences: humanities, social sciences, mathematics and natural science. On this foundation, the student builds an upperlevel program, either by pursuing interests in traditional arts and sciences or by structuring an interdisciplinary program suited to personal needs and interests. A student may use the large number of elective hours to gain proficiency in specific career areas. The business content of non-business programs is limited to 25 percent of the credit hours applied toward graduation. The degree requires completion of 123 hours, at least 36 of which must be upper-level courses (3000 or 4000 level) within the arts and sciences. The minimum grade point average of 2.0 required for graduation is computed for all course work which could apply toward the degree at UHD. LSCS and the partner universities provide equal employment, admission, and educational opportunities without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age or disability. The staff members in the Academic Student Services Office at the UC assist all students in determining which program of study to pursue. This includes providing information about the variety of programs available, reviewing transcripts to aid in identifying any courses to be completed before entering the program of choice, and serving as liaison between the student and university program representatives. Students who have already earned an associate’s degree or have a substantial number of college academic credit hours should contact the Academic Student Services Office for advising and to begin the transfer admission process for the university offering the degree program they desire to pursue. This brochure was created by the Academic Student Services Office based on information from the partner university.
