Pontiac`s War and The Proclamation Line of 1763

Pontiac’s War
and
The Proclamation Line of
1763
French are out of the Ohio Valley


With the French out of North America, many
colonists headed west to farm the former
French land.
With a constant arrival of new settlers this
worried many Native American tribes.
Relations with the Native Americans
Worsen


Many Native Americans
such as the: Seneca’s,
Delaware’s, Shawnees,
Ottawa's, Miami’s, and
Huron’s tribes lived in the
Ohio Valley.
When the settlers moved
into the Ohio Valley there
were constant battles with
the Native Americans.
What the British Planned?



The British sent Lord
Jeffrey Amherst to keep
order.
Amherst raised prices on
British goods when they
sold them to the Native
Americans.
He also allowed settler to
build forts on Native
American lands.
The Native Americans choose to
follow Ottawa Chief, Pontiac



How he felt about the British….
“dogs dressed in red, who have come to rob us
of our hunting grounds and drive away our
game.”
Pontiac started by attacking British troops at
Fort Detroit.
Pontiac’s War



In a few months, the Native
Americans captured most of the
British forts but the British soon
regained most of their forts.
The war did not last long after the
Treaty of Paris was signed because
the Native Americans would no
longer be receiving French Aid.
The Indian Nations stopped
fighting and went home.
Proclamation Line of 1763


Pontiac’s War
convinced the British to
close western lands to
settlers.
The proclamation drew
an imaginary line along
the crest of the
Appalachian Mountains.
Proclamation Line of 1763 cont.



All settlers west of
the line were to
remove themselves at
once.
To enforce the law,
Britain sent 10,000
troops to the
colonies.
Few troops actually
left the Atlantic coast.
How the colonist reacted to the
proclamation.



This Proclamation angered some colonies
because they claimed land in the West.
The colonists had to pay for the additional
troops.
Many settlers just ignored the proclamation and
moved west anyway.
