Headmaster
Having emerged from the “fact-finding”
phase that characterized my first year at
Lycée Français de San Francisco, I spent
much of the 2011-12 school year working
with my colleagues to implement new
ideas and meet our objectives. One of our
goals is to continue providing a worldclass education encompassing the French
curriculum and the best of the American
program.
As always, we dedicated much effort to
continue offering an unparalleled education
for the benefit of our all students, including:
the creation of a new music room on the
Ortega Campus; the selection of our new
Sausalito Campus; demonstrating our
commitment to Marin families; and the
implementation of the “No Bully” program
on the Ashbury Campus.
We worked towards updating our vision
and mission and maximizing resources to
support that mission. With this in mind, we
adopted a new vision and mission in early
June to better reflect our community and
our objectives.
Working from the results of a technology
audit, we undertook substantial upgrades
of our infrastructure and restructured our IT
team. We pushed to improve our technology
resources to prepare our students and our
teachers with 21st Century skills and tools.
We recognize that superior learning cannot
happen without great teaching, and
therefore during the 2011-12 school year
we further organized and supported LFSF
faculty with professional development
opportunities.
I would like you to join me in thanking all
of our faculty and staff, as well as all of the
fundraising contributors listed in this Annual
Report: it is they who enable us to enhance
our children’s education.
I invite you to recall some of the other
highlights of last year as you browse
through the following pages. In one way or
another, each of you has chosen to be a
part of the Lycée Français de San Francisco
community and expressed your belief in
what we are trying to achieve on behalf of
our students. I couldn’t ask for a better job
than I have in supporting each of you.

Après la nécessaire phase de découverte
et de collecte d’informations de ma première année au Lycée Français de San
Francisco, j’ai passé la plus grande partie
de l’année scolaire 2011/2012 à travailler
avec mes collègues à la formulation de
nouvelles idées et la mise en place de
nos objectifs.
Enfin, nous savons bien qu’un apprentissage exceptionnel ne peut se faire
sans enseignants exceptionnels, et
nous avons donc passé l’année scolaire
2011/2012 à développer encore plus
l’accès à des programmes de formation
professionnelle continue pour le corps
enseignant.
Un de ces objectifs est notre engagement à continuer d’offrir une éducation
de tout premier ordre, rassemblant le
programme français enseigné en français et des enseignements américains
dispensés en anglais.
J’aimerais qu’ensemble nous disions un
grand merci à l’ensemble de nos enseignants et de nos personnels, comme à
toutes les familles et amis du Lycée Français de San Francisco qui ont contribué
à nos actions de levées de fonds. Il sont
listés dans le présent rapport annuel et
nous permettent de poursuivre notre action éducative.
Pour faire suite à un audit technologique,
nous avons entrepris d’importantes améliorations de notre infrastructure en la
matière, de même que le renouvellement
d’une grande partie de notre équipe responsable des nouvelles technologies.
Nous mettons tous nos efforts à améliorer nos ressources technologiques afin
de donner à nos étudiants et nos enseignants les compétences et le matériel
adaptés au XXIème siècle.
Permettez-moi de vous remettre en mémoire quelques autres moments forts de
l’année dernière tout en parcourant les
pages qui suivent. Chacun d’entre vous,
à sa manière, a choisi de faire partie de la
communauté LFSF et a exprimé son adhésion à ce que nous essayons de réaliser au profit de nos élèves. Je ne pouvais
pas espérer de meilleure tâche que celle
qui consiste à vous soutenir dans cette
noble action.

L’année dernière encore, de nombreux
efforts ont été consacrés à l’amélioration
de nos programmes éducatifs uniques
et ce, au bénéfice de tous nos élèves.
Cela s’est traduit par exemple par la
création d’une nouvelle salle de musique
à Ortega, par le choix de notre nouveau
campus à Sausalito, preuve évidente de
notre engagement au côté des familles
du comté de Marin, et par la mise en
œuvre d’un programme anti-harcèlement
à Ashbury. Nous avons également travaillé à renouveler nos vision et mission
pour l’avenir et à optimiser les moyens
de les atteindre. Ces nouvelles vision
et mission ont ainsi été adoptées début
juin et, désormais, elles symbolisent au
mieux notre communauté.

and share in their joy on a daily basis.
We encourage every family to be an
active part of the LFSF community by:

- Contributing to the Annual Fund;
- Participating in the Gala Auction and
Fund for the Future;
- Volunteering: it is our hope that
every parent will volunteer at least
10 hours each year;
- Attending school events,
celebrations and social events;
- Participating in merchant programs;
- Staying informed about LFSF
activities and programs.
Generous giving makes is possible for
LFSF to offer the highly recognized
French national curriculum enriched
by key American courses including
Language Arts, Literature, History and
Mathematics, allowing our students
flexibility and academic transfer to
the best schools and colleges in the
world.
How do we prepare global citizens?
By investing in innovative curricula
and programs, attracting and retaining
top-notch faculty and staff, and
supporting our learning environment
with state-of-the-art technology and
facilities.
Tuition covers the basics — almost.
We know that independent school
tuition is high. But, tuition is just a
portion of what we need to cover the
school’s operational expenses and
provide a world-class education to
our students.
A tuition that reflects the actual cost
of an LFSF education is not affordable
for many of our families. While tuition
and fees are not tax-deductible, direct
contributions to the Annual Fund and
the Fund for the Future are, allowing
a tax advantage for those donors who
are able to contribute more.
We believe that a solid fundraising
program is the best way to ensure
social, ethnic and economic diversity
by helping to keep tuition affordable
for all.
We value education
Contributions fund important
projects
Donations help pay for science and
computer labs; athletic equipment;
co-curricular and extracurricular
activities; performing arts; faculty
professional and development;
scholarships and more.
We rely on participation
LFSF engages in fundraising activities
from July to June based on the
school calendar. These programs and
events are coordinated through the
Development Department.
How you can participate
in the annual fundraising
program:
yearly gift at their own level. Your
contribution immediately supports our
students.
Major and Special Gifts
We are delighted that LFSF continues
to grow. Important large-scale
projects on the horizon include
facilities renovation and academic
program enhancements. This past
year, we have received major gifts
of $200,000 to our endowment and
$30,000 for our new Marin campus,
opening in September 2013 in
Sausalito.
Gala Auction
Our annual Gala Auction is the
biggest fundraising event of the year,
composed of silent and live auctions,
a sit-down dinner, and dancing.
There is also an online auction with
hundreds of special items. Each
year, at the Gala, the Fund for the
Future features a special program,
equipment or training that can help
propel the school forward.
Events and Activities
Throughout the year, LFSF sponsors
other fundraising events and activities
such as a wine tasting evening, backto-school picnic, and the Kermesse.
These are great opportunities
to contribute and celebrate our
community.

was extremely impressed at how well
organized the tour was. She remembers
thinking, “if I ever do get my child into this
school, I will become one of the parents
who guides these tours and talks about
how great this school is.”
One year later, the British national born
in South Africa, followed through on that
intention. She and her husband Mark
are new parents to the school where
Lena is thriving, and Tamsin now leads
those tours.
But their volunteer efforts didn’t stop there.
Mark and Tamsin found other ways to
contribute to the school including soliciting
auction donations from neighborhood
establishments like their favorite French
bistro, Le Zinc in Noe Valley. The positive,
enthusiastic responses they encountered
when asking for donations reinforced the
LFSF status as an important, vital part of
the community, as well as the Vantress’s
decision to send Lena there.
“Participating in the Gala Auction had been
a great way to get involved, meet other
parents and the school’s administrators,
and begin to give back. “I’m sure we will
continue to define our niche as time goes
on,” she explains.
When choosing a school, Tamsin and Mark
sought to give their daughters a European
education much like Tamsin enjoyed
growing up in Britain.
“We were looking for a bilingual immersion
curriculum; we want our girls to be
comfortable around other cultures and
nationalities,” says Mark. Their goal is to
prepare their children to be global citizens
and Mark feels that being bilingual will help
them be “better problem-solvers, more
creative thinkers, and well equipped for the
future.”
In just three months, they have begun
to see their educational goals come to
fruition. Lena calls Tamsin “Maman,”
comes home from school singing French
songs, and misses her teachers and
classmates on the weekend.
“We made the right decision and it’s
reinforced on a daily basis.”
The couple also jumped in to help with the
Gala Auction, the school’s biggest event,
by assisting in set-up, as well as writing
descriptions and photographing online
auction items.
Mark, a sales manager, artist, and
composer made a special, personalized
contribution to the auction. Putting his
talents to work, he donated one of his
large-format abstract paintings and an
album of his original piano compositions.
As a new family to the school, the
Vantresses have reaped personal benefits
through their volunteer work. According to
Tamsin, one of the perks of volunteering is
that it has accelerated their integration into
the LFSF community.

Alors que Tamsin Vantress participe pour la
première fois aux Portes Ouvertes du Lycée
Français de San Francisco, elle est frappée d’une
révélation.
Directrice marketing chez Apple et mère de Lena
(petite section de maternelle) et d’Eva (trois mois),
Tamsin est vivement impressionnée par la qualité
de l’organisation de la visite. Elle se souvient
aujourd’hui s’être dit : « Si je devais, un jour, faire
admettre mon enfant dans cette école, je ferais
comme ces parents d’élèves qui vous guident et
vous expliquent tout ce qu’elle a de formidable
à offrir. »
Un an plus tard, cette citoyenne britannique
d’origine sud-africaine a mis son intention à
exécution. Elle et son mari Mark comptent parmi
les nouveaux parents d’élèves de l’école, dans
laquelle Lena s’épanouit tandis que Tamsin mène à
son tour ces mêmes visites guidées.
Cependant, leurs activités de volontariat ne
s’arrêtent pas là. Mark et Tamsin ont découvert
d’autres façons d’apporter leur contribution à
l’école : ils récoltent des donations pour une vente
aux enchères auprès d’établissements du quartier
comme Le Zinc de Noe Valley, leur bistro favori.
Les réactions positives et enthousiastes qu’ils ont
pu observer au fil de leur collecte n’ont fait que
renforcer la place importante, voire essentielle,
tenue par le Lycée Français de San Francisco au
sein de la communauté locale, de même que la
décision du couple d’y scolariser la petite Lena.
Mark et Tamsin n’ont pas non plus hésité à
prêter main-forte lors de l’organisation du Gala,
l’événement le plus important de l’école, en aidant
à sa préparation, en rédigeant des descriptions
d’articles mis aux enchères en ligne, ou encore en
les prenant en photo.
Mark, responsable commercial, artiste et
compositeur, a apporté sa propre contribution aux
enchères. Il a mis ses talents à profit en faisant don
d’un de ses tableaux abstraits grand format et d’un
album de ses compositions originales exécutées
au piano.
Bien que nouvelle au sein de l’école, la famille
Vantress a retiré de nombreux avantages
au travers du bénévolat.
Selon Tamsin, le
volontariat a permis d’accélérer l’intégration
de sa famille au sein de la communauté.
« Participer au Gala a été pour nous non seulement
une excellente façon de nous impliquer, et de
rencontrer d’autres parents et les dirigeants de
l’école, mais aussi un moyen de commencer
à donner en retour. Je suis sûre que nous
continuerons à y définir notre rôle au fil des années
à venir », explique-t-elle.
“Nous avons fait
le bon choix.”
Le moment de choisir une école venu, Tamsin et
Mark souhaitaient offrir à leurs filles une éducation
de type européen, semblable à celle de Tamsin en
Angleterre.
« Nous cherchions un programme d’enseignement
bilingue en immersion. Nous voulons que nos filles
soient à l’aise au contact de cultures et nationalités
différentes », raconte Mark. Leur objectif est de les
préparer à devenir des citoyennes du monde, et,
pour ce faire, Mark pense qu’être bilingue aidera
ses enfants « à mieux résoudre les problèmes, à
développer un mode de pensée plus créatif, et à se
donner de meilleures armes pour l’avenir ».
En l’espace de trois mois seulement, ils ont
commencé à voir leurs objectifs éducatifs porter
leurs fruits. Lena appelle Tamsin « maman »,
rentre à la maison en fredonnant des chansons
françaises, et meurt d’envie chaque week-end de
retrouver ses instituteurs et ses camarades.
« Nous avons fait le bon choix et chaque journée
passée ne fait que renforcer notre décision. »

Creative power duo Laurent Le Gall and
Sandrine Di Rienzo make films and television.
Among their work at Free Run Pictures is a
documentary about Burning Man, a film about
Senegalese percussionist Idrissa Diop meeting Bay Area and International musician Carlos
Santana, and the French television series
“L’Amérique dans tous ses Etats”, a discovery
of 21st century America with French actor Gérard Klein. They are also launching LaFrench.
tv, an Internet television platform featuring
film, documentary, and cartoons in French and
English.
But on Fridays, you might find Sandrine selling
croissants, pains au chocolat, crêpes, and
other pâtisseries at the Boulange on the Marin
campus of the Lycée Français de San Francisco, where her son Lhassa attends third grade.
The other volunteer hats she has worn over the
years have included dishing out hot lunches to
the students, and logging four years as a room
parent.
“I understand the
importance of
helping.”
“I understand the importance of helping, and
these are a few of the ways I can give back,”
she says. Both Sandrine and Laurent are
French — she hails from Lyon, he from Brest.
She explains that this type of parental involvement is rare at home. “Even though it’s not in
our mentality, we love the school, love being
part of it, and want to know what’s going on. I
am present and involved with Lhassa’s education and want to do as much as I can for
the school.”
As a room parent, Sandrine’s contributions
centered on communication — keeping the
parents informed of class activities and being
a liaison between the teachers, administrators,
and parents. She also set up and organized
classroom activities.
World travelers Laurent and Sandrine chose
the Lycée Français de San Francisco because
they felt it was extremely important for their
son to be enriched by a French education,
similar to the way they grew up. They like the
French curriculum, small class sizes, and take
comfort in the fact that if they return to France,
“Lhassa would fully be able to keep up. His
French is as perfect as his English,” Sandrine
says. Other than the “wonderful experience”
their son has enjoyed attending the school
since Kindergarten, they count the close access to his teachers, the incredible people
they have met, and a staff that is “very present
and there for you” as significant
personal gains from being part of the school
community.
“This is definitely unlike how it was growing up
in France. Here, French parents see that they
have the possibility to help and we take so
many positives from it. It takes a village.”

Di Rienzo réalisent des films et travaillent
pour la télévision. Leurs réalisations pour Free
Run Pictures comprennent notamment un

en anglais.
Malgré cela, le vendredi, vous trouverez Sandrine
vendant croissants, pains au chocolat, crêpes et
pâtisseries pour la Boulange du Lycée Français
de San Francisco au campus de Marin où son fils
Lhassa est en classe de CE2.
En tant que bénévole, Sandrine a aussi accompli
d’autres tâches, comme servir des repas chauds
aux élèves et encore être parent délégué de
classe (elle en est à sa quatrième année).
« Je veux
participer autant
que possible.»
« Je comprends l’importance d’aider et ce sont
quelques façons de participer », dit-elle. Sandrine
et Laurent sont tous deux français - elle est
originaire de Lyon, et lui de Brest. Cependant,
Sandrine remarque que la participation des
parents à l’école est rare en France. « Même si
ce n’est pas dans notre mentalité, nous aimons
faire partie de l’école et souhaitons savoir ce
qu’il s’y passe. Je suis présente et m’engage
dans l’éducation de Lhassa et je veux pouvoir
participer autant que possible. »
En tant que parent délégué, Sandrine se voit
confier des tâches principalement tournées vers
la communication, afin que les parents puissent
rester informés au sujet des activités de la classe
et agir en tant que liaison entre les enseignants,
les administrateurs et les parents. Sandrine a
aussi organisé des activités en classe.
Etant tous deux de grands voyageurs, Sandrine
et Laurent ont choisi le Lycée Français de San
Francisco parce qu’il était important pour eux que
leur fils bénéficie d’une éducation en français,
similaire à celle qu’ils ont reçue en grandissant.
Ils apprécient le programme français, les classes
de petite taille et savent que s’ils décident
de retourner vivre en France, « Lhassa sera
pleinement en mesure de suivre le rythme. Son
français est tout aussi parfait que son anglais »,
explique Sandrine.
Outre cette « expérience exceptionnelle » pour leur
fils qui fréquente l’école depuis la grande section
de maternelle, les deux parents apprécient la
facilité d’accès au personnel enseignant, les gens
incroyables qu’ils ont rencontrés et un personnel
administratif qui est « très présent et là pour
vous », autant de facteurs importants quand on
fait partie de la communauté du Lycée Français
de San Francisco.
« C’est très différent de la façon dont nous avons
grandi en France. Ici, les parents français voient
qu’ils ont la possibilité d’aider l’école ce qui a une
incidence positive pour tous. Pour qu’un enfant
grandisse, il faut tout un village. »

What do a spooky haunted house and tickets
to San Francisco’s world champion baseball
team have in common? Give up?
Both are among the varied contributions that
Jocelynn and Rick Stone have made to the
Lycée Français de San Francisco through their
volunteer efforts and donations.
Jocelynn, a native San Franciscan, former architect project manager, and Presidio Graduate School MBA, is also mom to sixth-grader
Lillian. Dad Rick grew up on the East Coast
and is the controller at Edgewood Center for
Children and Families.
Rick and Jocelynn are also dedicated to the
annual fundraising Gala Auction, pitching
in with decorating, organizing silent auction
items, and gathering donations.
This is where the Giants tickets come in.
“We’ve owned Giants season tickets since
1988 and have donated some.”
They also solicit donations from local eateries
they frequent including Crêpes on Cole and
Arizmendi Bakery.
The couple shares a love of travel, a mutual desire for a bilingual education for their
daughter, and a passion for Halloween.
Volunteering is very important to Jocelynn, in
part because she doesn’t speak French. She
finds it an ideal way to make friends, maintain
social connections to the school,
and be plugged into her daughter’s
education.
“Rick and I reintroduced the Halloween
Haunted House to Ashbury six years ago,”
explains Jocelynn. “I have been part of all the
houses since, as has Rick for the past five
years. He is the resident mummy and I am
typically a headless monster or dressed as a
werewolf.”
Both parents were attracted to the wellrounded curriculum, diversity, and creativity
they have found at LFSF. Rick points out that
Lillian doesn’t simply write book reports but
designs book covers and studies author bios.
Jocelynn is charmed by the songs and poems
Lillian has memorized in French.

The Stones and other Halloween aficionados set up a maze-like passageway that the
kids really get excited about, begging their
teachers to visit over and over again. “There
are many loyal parents who help out with this
event every year,” says Jocelynn. “It’s hard
to resist.”
One of the big “Aha!” moments took place
while the family was vacationing in Hawaii.
Lillian went to camp with an international
group of kids. Her ability to speak French
allowed her to communicate and make friends
with other children while she was thousands
of miles from home: the mark of a true global
citizen.

Qu’ont en commun une effrayante maison hantée
et des billets pour aller voir jouer les Giants de
San Francisco, les champions en titre de la Série
mondiale de baseball ?
Vous donnez votre langue au chat ?
Ce sont toutes deux des contributions que
Jocelynn et Rick Stone ont apportées au Lycée
Français de San Francisco grâce à leurs efforts
bénévoles et à leurs dons.
Jocelynn est originaire de San Francisco et
diplômée d’un MBA de la Presidio Graduate
School. Ancienne responsable de projets en
architecture, elle est également la maman de
Lillian, élève de sixième. Le papa, Rick, a grandi
sur la côte Est et est aujourd’hui contrôleur
financier au Edgewood Center for Children and
Families. Le couple partage une passion pour les
voyages et Halloween, ainsi qu’une volonté de
donner à leur fille une éducation bilingue.
« Rick et moi avons réintroduit la maison hantée

années, et Rick aux cinq dernières. Nous aimons

me déguise en loup-garou. »
« Depuis 1988, nous avons chaque année des
billets pour assister aux matchs des Giants et en
avons fait don de plusieurs. » Ils ont également
sollicité des dons auprès des lieux qu’ils
aiment fréquenter, comme Crêpes on Cole et la
boulangerie Arizmendi.
S’investir par le biais du bénévolat est très
important pour Jocelynn, d’autant plus qu’elle
ne parle pas français. Elle trouve que c’est là un
moyen idéal de se faire des amis, de maintenir
des liens sociaux à l’école, et de rester proche de
l’éducation de sa fille.
Les deux parents ont été attirés par l’équilibre des
programmes, la diversité et la créativité offerts
par le LFSF. Rick souligne que Lillian n’écrit pas
simplement des compte-rendu de livres, mais
qu’elle en dessine aussi les couvertures et étudie
la biographie des auteurs. Jocelynn est, quant à
elle, sous le charme des chansons et poèmes en
français que Lillian a mémorisés.
Un moment décisif pour les Stone est arrivé alors
que la famille était en vacances à Hawaï. Lillian
a participé à un camp avec un groupe d’enfants
venant du monde entier. Sa capacité à parler en
français lui a permis de communiquer et de se
faire des amis alors qu’elle était à des milliers de
kilomètres de la maison : la marque d’une vraie
citoyenne du monde.
Les Stone et autres adeptes d’Halloween créent
un labyrinthe que les enfants parcourent avec
beaucoup d’excitation. « Il y a beaucoup de
parents fidèles qui participent à cet événement
chaque année », dit Jocelynn. « C’est difficile de
résister. »
Rick et Jocelynn apportent leur soutien également
au Gala et sa vente aux enchère annuels,
notamment à la décoration, l’organisation des
enchères silencieuses, et à la collecte de dons.
C’est là que les billets pour les Giants entrent
en jeu.
