“I DIDN’t KNOW ” I COULD DO THAT. THE BISHOP STRACHAN SCHOOL 2015–16 IMPACT REPORT Karen, Class of 2020 had never tried to be an urban planner. Had never done anything with architecture outside of regular activities in the classroom. Then an opportunity arose that enabled Karen and her classmates to go on a trip to the Toronto Port Lands. This wasn’t just any field trip. The girls got to meet with architects and city planners who explained what went into re-thinking this challenging area of Toronto’s urban landscape. The girls later worked alongside architects to create their own structures. Karen emerged from this hands-on learning experience, discovering something about herself. THIS HAPPENED BECAUSE OF YOU. Your donation to BSS is changing the lives of young girls. What could be more powerful, more profound than helping a child discover her strength…giving her a feeling of optimism and excitement for the future? That is what your support of BSS through the Intersection campaign has accomplished. And it happens every day, in countless ways, for every girl in our school. 1INTRODUCTION 2 CAMPAIGN GOALS 4 INTERSECTION CAMPUS FUND 6 INTERSECTION INNOVATION FUND 8 INTERSECTION COMMUNITY FUND 10 HEAD’S DISCRETIONARY FUND 12 OUR DONORS 1 THE BISHOP STRACHAN SCHOOL 2015–16 IMPACT REPORT $35M $25M $29M $30M ALMOST THERE. INTERSECTION Campus Fund “W hat strikes me is the passion that the STEM teachers have for their subjects. It is the sheer enthusiasm for what they do that convinces me to try things I would have never attempted. My decision to join the VEX robotics team is an example. Previously, I would have scarcely considered participating in a robotics competition. But the individual attention I’ve received from my teachers and their confidence in me has made me learn new things about myself.” Rania Phillips, Class of 2018 “The power of music and the plasticity of the brain go together very strikingly, especially in young people.” Oliver Sacks, MD, Neurologist, Author Intersection: The place or point where two or more things meet or cross each other In our new facility, science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) will no longer be exiled to one end of a building while art and music studios are at another. Bringing disciplines together, allowing them to intersect naturally, will empower learning and reinforce an innovation mindset. Thoughtful Building. Building for Thought. OPENING SPRING 2017 Your support of the Campus Fund has enabled us to build a state-of-the-art facility designed from the ground up to inspire learning at every turn. It is a marvel of thoughtful design that has our students and our program at the centre of every element. The investment you made will pay dividends for generations of BSS girls. STEM Lab “The new STEM Labs will create an environment that will excite and engage students in ways I don’t think we’ve even imagined yet. All the teachers are eager to get in there and start working with the possibilities. The energy is palpable.” “The music space will be at the heart of the new building. Everyone will be able to see, hear and experience the work of our students, and that will be infectious.” Music Space The Arts Tom Maraccini, BSS Music Teacher Heidi Miller, Head, BSS Science Department “W hile memories of the charm that characterizes our 3rd floor studio will live on, the new art space will energize the students’ creativity in never-before-possible ways, and that is exciting to contemplate.” “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” Paul Toth, Head of BSS Visual Arts Albert Einstein “We believe in the power of creativity and critical thinking skills. These are invaluable traits to have in the era of innovation and BSS has a firm handle on how best to develop these skills. Enabling the different subject areas to intersect and communicate with one another is the genius behind this building design and that’s why we are supporting the new facility.” FUN STEM FACTS: WHERE THE JOBS ARE 75% 7/10 26% Percentage of new jobs created between 2009 and 2018 occur in high-skill occupations within STEM industries Of the 10 highest-paying jobs in Canada, seven are in STEM industries STEM workers earn up to STEM skills are at the 26 per cent more than non-STEM counterparts foundation of virtually all discoveries and advancements, which are the drivers for economic growth Source: The Globe and Mail unless otherwise indicated. 4 THE BISHOP STRACHAN SCHOOL 2015–16 IMPACT REPORT #1 According to Jobpostings.ca’s analysis of job sectors experiencing growth, STEM fields top the list Andrea JACKSON-Lev 1993 and Sara JACKSON 1995, sisters, Old Girls, and current parents to Lilly, Class of 2028, Isabella, Class of 2025, Abby, Marlee and Mia, Class of 2023 5 THE BISHOP STRACHAN SCHOOL 2015–16 IMPACT REPORT INTERSECTION INNOVATION Fund “Moral courage is asking difficult questions of myself and of others while supporting my community as it moves forward. The Task Force is a group of people who share perspectives with me that I never would have considered otherwise. If you’re invested in social justice, it’s a great platform for personal growth as well as hard conversations.” Clare Tremain, Class of 2019 Moral Courage Task Force members (l to r) Chiara Picao, Class of 2019, Andrea Mozarowski, Senior School Lead Teacher and Clare Tremain, Class of 2019. Experts Make a Difference Thanks to donor funds, the Senior School’s Moral Courage task force was significantly enhanced with the addition of consultant, Michelle Cooper, a partner of Courage Group International, where she works with organizations on leadership development and cultural transformation. Her training helped teachers learn new skills in managing difficult subjects that lead to more authentic and productive conversations. Food for Thought The Great Outdoors as Teacher Harnessing the learning that’s everywhere in nature, BSS was able to retain the consulting services of Eileen Tran, an expert outdoor educator and BSS Alumna who helped Junior School faculty and students maximize opportunities to learn in the outdoor classroom. The girls became more resourceful, confident, aware and able to adapt to challenge. “W hat is nature?” Melanie, JK Student “Staying actively engaged in novel and inventive learning opportunities is an essential mindset for an education environment. We want teachers and students to be supported in their quest for new ideas and creative ways of deepening understanding.” Innovation is a bit of a buzz word these days, but its significance in today’s economy and society cannot be overstated. Not only does BSS want to facilitate a culture of innovation for the betterment of our students’ experience, we also want to encourage an innovative mindset as part of the key skills our students cultivate in their own lives. “The students simply blew me away with their thoughtful, intelligent and creative approach – designing a sustainable neighborhoodfor Villers Island on the Waterfront. I am so proud to have made a small c ontribution to their learningexperience, and hopefully, some of these exceptional students will be inspired to help make Toronto a more livable, walkable and vibrant city.” Robert Mah, member of the Board of Trustees and parent to Jasmine, Class of 2022 and Olivia, Class of 2024 “W hat might appear as just an activity exploring urban planning and architecture took on deeper meaning with the authentic collaboration of professionals in these fields.” Professional Growth A key to innovation is constant learning and at BSS, our teachers are always students. One of the many ways contributions to the Innovation Fund have provided unique opportunities for faculty learning was on display at the North American Reggio Emilia Alliance, a conference for all educators involved in the Reggio-inspired approach. For the first time, BSS was able to have the full complement of Junior School faculty in attendance. “The shared experience of learning together, debriefing together, and discussing our different interpretations together took this form of professional development to a whole new level.” William Fleissig, CEO of Waterfront Toronto, and parent of Ariel, Class of 2021 and Mia, Class of 2023 Vanessa Vanclief, BSS Teacher Working With the Pros Imagining My Sustainable City – The Innovation Fund was put to meaningful work with this 5-day intensive program for Middle School students. Starting with a workshop at the City of Toronto Planning Department, the students then accompanied architects from the firm No. 9 to the Port Lands and worked with them to imagine, design and build an 18-square metre model of a new plan for the area. Your gift will never end as these four formative high school years will be carried with me forever and have helped to shape me into the person I am today. I hope to one day be able to give the same gift to another girl like me.” Strength in Diversity A goal of $10 million was set AND REACHED for this important part of our campaign. In its simplest terms, the community fund was created to support our financial assistance program. The impact is much more profound. By making it possible for great girls to join us who might otherwise not have this opportunity, we enhance the experience for everyone. Diverse perspectives, backgrounds and cultures bring deeper conversations to the classroom as we learn in an environment that is a true reflection of the world we live in. Isabella RIVAS ’14, Recipient of Financial Assistance Isabella RIVAS ’14 (second from the left) with her peers at Graduation. “I just started my teaching career in Greenwich, Connecticut this year, and I am also able to pursue my hockey career in the National Women’s Hockey League. BSS helped foster these two passions for me as a student, and I am excited to see where these paths will take me.” Shannon J. DOYLE ’10, Recipient of Financial Assistance The Echo Chamber Effect Learning in an environment that reflects only your views, perspectives and cultural reference points is no learning at all. That’s why BSS is committed to increasing its Financial Assistance resources. The filter should not be financial means. The only question should be, ‘What can you bring to this community that will enrich us all?’ “That additional year at BSS – to settle in, make friends, and participate in leadership roles, debating, yearbook, sports teams, prefect – was everything I needed to launch my life and career forward.” Valerie WHITTINGHAM Pringle ’71, Old Girl, parent of alumna, and recipient of Financial Assistance “The level of curiosity that BSS ignites within the girls sends them off into worlds of potential and realizations. What an incredible gift you all give each student.” The Dingle Family, parents to Cordelia, Class of 2018 and recipient of Financial Assistance (pictured left) “I love seeing a variety of perspectives in the history classroom as we unpack the story of Canada that has so many diverse elements to it. The new tables have a vintage feature which, along with the pictures of BSS students from different time periods, adds a wonderful touch of nostalgia. The new set-up creates a comfortable space where girls can get together for a meal, or simply to relax and socialize.” “In the English Department, we have benefitted from enrichment opportunities like speakers and performances brought in-house, and professional learning that gives us access to innovative teachers both afield and brought to us. I am well aware that these opportunities are supported in part by the Annual Fund.” Deryn Lavell, Head of School with author and psychologist Michael Thompson, Ph.D., for a day of conversation and exploration into child development. Whether it’s through the Intersection campaign or a regular donation to the Head’s Discretionary Fund, these are the resources we use to take this powerful experience to a new level of exceptional. SEIZING THE MOMENT The Full Circle Project launched in 2015–16, and Old Girls rallied to have their names inscribed on a glass wall in the atrium of our new building. ONE FUND, MANY NAMES BSS students benefit from funds that are set aside to take advantage of emerging opportunities to enhance their experience. These are things that can’t be funded through tuition alone. In some instances, opportunities present themselves that we didn’t plan for, but we know would make a big difference to the girls. With your support, we have the flexibility we need to be agile and in a constant state of improvement. The BSS Annual Fund’s continued strength comes from the generosity of our entire community each year. Many Old Girls, leaving grads, current and past parents, volunteers and faculty and staff, have made contributions to this important part of our fundraising efforts. Thank you to everyone who gave to the Full Circle Project, the 2016 Graduating Class Scholarship, and to the participation of Faculty and Staff who support BSS in this and so many other ways. “I am so proud that the parents and students of the graduating class came together to make this wonderful gift to BSS. The Class of 2016 Scholarship will have direct impact on students at the school and it will continue to do so for years to come.” “It was 60 years ago that I first came to BSS as a boarding student. Buildings in the city have changed, or been torn down, which I remember from my lifetime. However, BSS is rooted in its history.” Pat HALL Cassels ’63, Supporter of the Head’s Discretionary Fund Alexia McGavin Coles, Parent of Piper, Class of 2016, and Chair of the 2016 Graduating Class Scholarship Committee Graduates from the Class of 2016 ANNUAL FUND FUN FACTS “I saw the photos of the students who came before me and it really drove home how connected we all are as a community.
