Solving Radical Equations and Inequalities A.REI.2 Solve simple rational and radical equations in one variable, and give examples showing how extraneous solutions may arise.
Solving Radical equations:
1. Determine any restrictions that would cause extraneous solutions.
**Even indices can't have NEGATIVE radicands**
2. Isolate the radical grouping.

What am I learning today?
How to solve radical equations and inequalities
How will I show that I learned it?
Solve a radical equation or inequality and check for extraneous solutions
Reminder: Determine what x ≠ #. That # or range of numbers are where your extraneous solutions fall. Radicals: If you have an even root, must be ≥ 0!
3. Use the inverse function to solve (exponent = index).
4. Check your answer!

Solving Radical Inequalities
The endpoints of your solution set interval(s) are the SOLUTIONS.
**For an EVEN INDEX, there will also be an endpoint at the xvalue that will make your radical = 0.** If part of the solution set, the endpoint that makes the radical = 0 will always use a solid dot; for the other endpoint, look at the sign of the inequality.
