“build a place where kids
could live, be loved, feel safe,
and have wide open spaces
to ride horses.”
HISTORY OF THE RANCH
Jerry Hill, the founder of THCR, came to Riverhead, NY to preach for a church in
the 60’s and 70’s. He and his wife Fern opened their home and hearts to dozens of
foster children who were homeless and in need of temporary housing. Their older
son, Timothy, saw the painful hardships and emotional suffering that the children
had endured, and was deeply affected. He told his parents he wanted someday
to "build a place where troubled kids could live, be loved, feel safe, and have wide
open spaces to ride horses."
Timothy began working at age 12 to save money for the land where his dream
could become a reality. He worked three paper routes and had already begun
contacting real estate agents in search of property. Fern recalls fielding several
return calls from disgruntled real estate agents. She simply explained to them that
she could not discourage her son from following his dream.
On May 11, 1972, a tragic bicycle-truck accident ended Timothy’s life at the young
age of 13. His mother, seeking a way to commemorate his life, wrote a book called
Graduation to Glory which recounted Timothy's altruistic years and his visionary
dream of opening up a ranch for troubled children. Friends and neighbors
responded spontaneously resulting in the creation of a memorial fund earmarked
"for Timothy's Ranch". Jerry and Fern adopted their son's dream and God has
blessed the journey ever since. Timothy Hill Children's Ranch (THCR) opened its
doors for the first time on November 15, 1980. For more than 30 years, THCR has
been a safe haven for hundreds of children in their desperate times of abuse,
neglect, and crisis. The Ranch is a 70 acre, farm-style campus, located in Riverhead,
NY. THCR is licensed by the NY State Office of Children and Family Services and is
recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation.

Record Number of Volunteers Serve at THCR
“A volunteer is a person who is a light to others, giving witness in a mixed up age,
doing well and willing to do the tasks at hand. Being aware of another’s need and doing
something about it.” - unknown
A record number of volunteers came to serve at Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch this past year.
Several hundred guests came to serve in various capacities including mentoring residents,
working with the facilities/maintenance staff, fundraising and offering administrative
assistance. Many of these guests stayed overnight and not only took part in volunteering,
but enjoyed spending time with the residents and touring the East End of Long Island.

RESIDENTIAL GROUP HOME PROGRAM
THCR's Residential Group Home Program
provides residential care to boys and girls, ages
10-21, that are in need of a therapeutic
environment. Licensed by the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) residents are
primarily placed by Suffolk and Nassau County
Probation and Department of Social Services
(DSS). THCR is focused on education, individual
counseling & family counseling, vocational
training, horsemanship/adventure program
and spiritual direction.
TRANSITIONAL LIVING PROGRAMS
To fully complete one of THCR's transitional
programs requires that the resident have a
driver's license, GED or high school diploma,
full-time employment, and $10,000 of earned
income saved before transitioning out of
program. The programs differ in the resident's
age range, where they come from prior to
placement (foster care, homelessness, and
judicial system), the length of the program, and
the amount of direct supervision they require/receive.
SUPERVISED INDEPENDENT LIVING PROGRAM (SILP)
THCR's SILP provides transitional living for young men and women (16-21 years of
age) primarily placed by the DSS, Foster Care Division. However, some are placed
by the OCFS as well as the Department of Probation. Each young person attends
school full-time, works full- time or a combination of both. SILP generally is a 12-18
month program, but the SILP resident may be in program until they age out at 21
years old.
PROJECT 180°
Project 180° is a 12 - 18 month program
designed for young men and women (1725 years of age) placed by DSS Homeless
Housing Services. Project 180° residents
are facing the hardship of living in homeless shelters or have aged out of the foster
care system. The ultimate goal of this program is for residents to re-enter the community by way of securing a job, having a
stabilized income, obtaining housing and
becoming self-sufficient. Participants will
commit to a minimum of a one year stay.

RIGHT PATH
The Right Path program is a 12-18 month program for young men and women (1721 years of age) placed by the Sheriff's Department or the Suffolk County Criminal
Court as an alternative placement to prison.
The Right Path program provides a home for
these young people who would otherwise be
homeless or returning to negative environments, and teaches them how to become
productive citizens through career counseling,
caseworker & caretaker support and creating
plan for transitioning back into the community.
* All Transitional Living Programs (12-18 months) require, upon completion, that residents
have a drivers license, GED or high school diploma, full-time employment, and $10,000 in
the bank before transitioning out of program into society

Vocational Training
“The important thing is not is much that child should be taught, as that every child
should be given the wish to learn” -John Lubbock
THE LEARNING CENTER
After years of failing due to family challenges,
drugs, crime, and the consequences that result,
many young men and women come to the Ranch
without ever experiencing success. The average
grade upon arriving at THCR is 63% and some even
having grades as low as a 29%. It is also not
uncommon for students to be two to three grade
levels behind.
THCR’s Learning Center caterers to the needs of
each young man and woman, so they can Michael, a transitional care resident,
graduate High School, receive a GED and/or move graduated in 2015 from Suffolk
on to college in the future. In 2015, the average County Community College.
number of students served in the Learning Center was 15 with the highest month
serving 19 residents. In total 77 young men and women were educated and the
year end average GPA earned was an 86%.
VOCATIONAL TRAINING
Vocational Training is a major focus in Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch programs. The
goal is to teach each young adult how to become self-sufficient and productive
citizens. Many of the young adults that come to the Ranch have never worked a
day in their lives. They have unrealistic ideas and perceptions about work. The Vocational Training Program at THCR teaches them the joy and fulfillment in working
and learning new skill sets. They develop leadership abilities, increase their confidence and in turn become more marketable in the workforce. This program offers
a wide array of job training; such as: Entrepreneurship – building their own business,
Building Maintenance, Vehicle Maintenance, Woodworking, Horticulture, Culinary,
Horsemanship/Animal Care, Furniture Restoration, and Craftsmanship.
were
are they
now?
Since the Ranch opened the doors to its first home on November 15, 1980, more
than 1,000 young people have called the Ranch “home” and have received the
love that they need and deserve.
“I was starting to get use to moving around from foster home to foster home. At the
time, my mother couldn’t take care me because she couldn’t let go of her
addictions. One of the best choices I ever made was at the
age of 18. I was tired of hanging around drinking and smoking.
I wanted to be respectable in the eyes of the Lord and man.
In 2012, I decided to become a part of Timothy Hill Ranch and
by doing so; I have changed my life for the better. Within two
hardworking years I was able to be led to Christ, released from
bad habits, obtain a driver’s license, maintain a steady job,
save over 10k and buy my first car. If the Ranch did not exist, I
truly believe I could not find the same level of care and help
elsewhere. I would have continued to fall back into my old
ways. Currently I am vocational Trainer and Caretaker at
Timothy Hill. The best way I can show support in something I believe in is by being
actively involved. I want to give back as much as I can.”
-Brandon Roberts, 22
Recently as alumnus from 1993 shared this with THCR. He currently is married and
has two children. He has a career in information technology.
I arrived at the Ranch in April 1993 after staying at several other Children Center
locations. I can’t recall much about the first day except, it was love at first sight. I
was given a tour of the houses and the farm, I fell in love with the farm, especially
the opportunity to work and earn money. I learned many life skills as a result of my
stay at the Ranch, such as, work ethic, family values and how to travel, just to name
a few.
Most Ranch boys were frequently visited by family members or went home on a
weekend visit, I on the other hand didn’t have any visitors or home visits. While the
boys were counting days to go home, I was just glad to have the Ranch to call
home. Tim and Renne served as my true parents -- not just house parents. They truly
knew the boys that needed them most. They taught us what it’s like to have parents
that care about kids' well-being. There isn’t a day that goes by I’m not reminded
of the life lesson they taught me which now allows me to advance in life. They saw
the best in me. I’m so grateful to have spent three years at the Ranch under their
paternal guidance. As sad it may sound, these memories are the ones I still hold
dear to my heart and knowingly without them, I don’t know where I would be
today, God is good and Romans 8:28 define these moments.
2015 Wagon Wheel Club
There was a time when a wagon wheel was used to help propel people and supplies forward over mountains
and through rivers all across this great land. However, that wheel was only as strong as the spokes that supported
it; so it is also with the contributors who support the mission of THCR. They allow a place to exist for children to
travel safely forward in a direction of faith, hope and love. From January of 2015 through December 2015, the
