RECENT EVOLUTION OF TXDOT
CRCP STANDARD
• Concrete Pavement Working Group (TxDOT, Academia, Industry)
collaborated to incorporate 20+ years of research and observation to
generate 2009 CRCP Standard
• Tie-bar and transverse steel placement and amount no longer based on
Subgrade Drag Theory
• Other changes (will point out on standard)
• Low CoTE Standard released in 2012
• Minimum concrete thickness changed from 8.0 to 7.0 and half-inch
increments added
• CRCP-13 for single mat (7-13”)and double mat (14-15”) combines the
above changes, allowed tie bar inserter, new-to-old CRCP details for
widening and lengthening

6. % steel reduced to ~0.61 – 0.68
7. Low CoTE: % steel ~10% less

ACPA 53rd Annual Meeting - Austin, Texas 2016
DESIGN APPROACH
• Prescriptive, non-erodible bases
•
6” cement treated base and 1” ACP bond breaker
•
4” ACP or ASB
• Tied concrete shoulder or widened 2’ lane
• Steel located at mid depth
• 30 year Design Life, 95/90% reliability
• Most inputs fixed (strength of concrete, modulus, s.d., drainage, etc.)
• Will soon move to Quasi-ME (provides more credit for quality
base/subbase layers)
• Terminal Systems:
•
wide-flange
•
simple expansion joint
•
anchor lugs (no longer supported by Division experts)
ACPA 53rd Annual Meeting - Austin, Texas 2016
MATERIALS
• Low to Moderate CoTE coarse aggregates
* Andy Naranjo, TRB Webinar, 2015
ACPA 53rd Annual Meeting - Austin, Texas 2016
MATERIALS
• Low to Moderate CoTE coarse aggregates
• Fine Aggregate AI 60% (blending allowed)
• Encourage lower total cement content (<520 #/CY exempt
from ASR mitigation requirements)
• Allow Ty I, II, I/II, IL, IP, IS, IT, and V Cements
• Allow up to 35% fly ash replacement (Class C if total
cementitious content <520 #/CY)
• w/cm less than 0.50
ACPA 53rd Annual Meeting - Austin, Texas 2016
CONSTRUCTION
• Transverse or longitudinal tining
• Carpet drag for low-speed facilities
• First several NGCS recently completed in Houston
• 7-day compressive strength of 3,200 psi (or a lower value
proven to meet a 28-day compressive strength of 4,000 psi)
• Allows for occasional low strength (10%) results
• Strict deficient thickness enforcement with hefty penalties
• Ride Quality Requirements (IRI < 75)
