Dear Year 6 Parents and Carers
Welcome back! This term we are really excited because our learning will focus on WW1 and 2. We will
study the causes for each war, significant events – such as the D-Day landings – and which countries were
involved in the wars. We will develop our geography skills through learning about different compass and
map skills. Our Art and DT work will be based around this topic.
In English this term we will be reading ‘The Wedding Ghost’ and a variety of poems, letters,
autobiographies and biographies related to World War 2. We will improve our story writing and learn how
to develop our reading and writing of personal accounts which use emotive language. We will be continuing
to develop our sentence level work to make our writing more interesting.
In Maths we will be focusing on the following key skills: counting, partitioning and calculating; securing
number facts and shape knowledge; analysing data and investigating measures and most importantly,
applying our knowledge of number facts to real life problems.
In Science we will be learning about Light and using this knowledge to conduct real life investigations.
Homework
Your child will be given homework on a Friday. Please ensure that your child completes this homework and
returns it to school by the following Wednesday. Your child will choose their own reading book. Please
read with your child at least three times a week, discuss their book and sign the reading journal every day.
If you have any difficulties with Homework come and see us on Monday – we will be more
than happy to help.
PE
 Tuesdays (Indoor-Judo)
 Fridays (Outdoor)
Children will need to bring in their Judo kit every Tuesday and their P.E kit and trainers for their outdoor
P.E session Friday.
Trips and visits we are hoping to organise are:
 Into University – (visiting their centre daily for a week) including a trip to Cambridge University
Please can you make sure that your child comes to school wearing the correct uniform and that their name is
written in every piece of clothing.
PPA
On Tuesday afternoons the children will be taught by our Spanish teacher and partake in Judo. This is
because all teachers have one afternoon a week out of class in order to plan effective lessons for the
following week.
If you have any concerns or questions about any of this, please do not hesitate to contact us at school.
Yours Faithfully,
Mr Hazel, Violet and Graham
