Stocker Latin Essay Contest Winners Latin Tournament Awards and Plaques Announcements CAV Committees This summer the CAV will organize two committees. One will study our group’s finances and the other will put together a handbook for officers. If you would like to serve on either of these committees, please contact Margaret Hicks at margaretdhicks@ comcast.net. Summer 2013 CAV Award Winners Announced This year’s recipient of the Wayne W. Wray Student Scholarship award may be called many things. His teacher regards him as “a ‘poster child’ for Classics” in his school. When the regular teacher was away, this Latin student taught under the supervision of the substitute teacher…while a middleschooler. Some may recognize him as the 2011-2012 VJCL President whereas others know him as co-consul at the 2011 Gubernatoris Latin Academia. The committee is proud to name this year’s recipient: Evan Draim of St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School (teacher, Ian Hochberg). The CAV is proud to name Adam Williams of Flint Hill the 2013 recipient of the Angela Lloyd Book Award. Mr. Williams was recommended for this award both because of his excellent teaching and his work outside the classroom. One nominator writes, “he is one of the finest young educators with whom I have ever worked – dedicated, driven, and highly effective...” Outside the classroom he is the Contest Chair for VJCL and sits for the Medusa Mythology Exam. Mr. Williams selected The Oxford Classical Dictionary. Dr. Patrick Bradley from Rockbridge County High School is the 2013 winner of the Lurlene Todd Award for Excellence in Secondary School Teaching. Dr. Bradley’s nomination, from a former student, moved many present at the spring meeting. Dr. Bradley, known as just “the Doctor” by his students, is an inspirational teacher whose students consistently place on CAV contests. His students respect him for his knowledge, but they truly love him for opening his heart to them. Whether holding review sessions at home or modelling love of the classics, Dr. Brad encourages students to be life-long learners. At this spring meeting Sally Davis was named as the first recipient of the Jane Harriman Hall Award for Outstanding Service to the Classical Association of Virginia. In accepting, Sally thanked Jane for teaching her that you teach until every student has the opportunity of ‘getting it.’ Many members remarked it was Sally who was influential in their teaching careers. When coming to Virginia, the advice was always “Get in touch with Sally.” She plans to use her award to attend a workshop this summer with Reginald Foster. 2012 - 2013 CAV EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE President Margaret D. It will be a time for rejuvenation. Maybe you have already felt a little lift after attending the spring meeting. With guests from North Carolina in attendance, Virginia classicists showed their hospitality and great spirit at the University of Richmond. What a welcome we gave them and what a boost we all received from our speakers and displays. Some members took advantage of Lora Holland’s lesson in experiential learning by analyzing a sheep’s liver, others returned with cars full of new treasures from the silent auction, and we all were amused at the self-deprecating humor of our papyrologist Rick Phillips who taught us how to make papyrus, although he still waits for his plants to grow. Ryan Smout, a recent U of R graduate shared his findings from analyzing how our eyes move while reading Latin. We were transported back in time with Wayne Wray’s display of vintage Latin texts. My personal favorite was a guide to teaching Latin which gave the sage advice to look over an exercise the day before teaching it! Many thanks to Dean Simpson and his department for their willingness to host the meeting. Because of the organizational skills of Classics DepAdmistrative Coordinator Michele Bedsaul (a former student of Maureen O’Donnell) we were well-directed, well-escorted, and well-fed all day. Congratulations to Evan Draim of St.Stephen’s & St. Agnes, winner of the Wayne Wray Student Scholarship; to Adam Williams, our 2013 Angela Lloyd Book Award recipient; and to Patrick Bradley, the Lurlene Todd Teacher of the Year. All are very deserving. Our first Jane Harriman Hall Award for Outstanding Service to the Classical Association of Virginia was presented to Sally Davis, who plans to spend part of her award on a visit to a Reginald Foster workshop, and the rest she is so generously donating to the CAV Professional Development Fund. We are glad to recognize her for her gifts of time and talent in so many ways to our organization and profession. We want to thank our outgoing members-at-large Donald Brewster and Rick Phillips for their service on the Executive Committee. Newly elected members-at-large are Chris Ann Mateo and Rose Mary Sheldon. We thank them for agreeing to serve. We also thank Kevin Perry for his service as Chairman of the Wayne W.Wray CAV Student Scholarship Committee. As he steps down, Donald Brewster has agreed to take on that role. Amy Petersen did a fabulous job of organizing the silent auction, and we raised $688 for the Professional Development Fund. That will help send several people to conferences or activities. Ian Hochberg has done terrific work as Latin Tournament Director for five years. He has decided to pursue other interests, particularly his family, and he will serve as advisor to successor Kevin Jefferson who has so kindly agreed to take on the massive task of coordinating the test writing, the grading and the awarding for this challenging test. If Kevin asks for your help, please support him. We congratulate all of our winners on the contests and their teachers for their time in entering their students. We sincerely thank the writers, proofreaders and judges who make those contests possible. The members of the awards committees also spend many agonizing moments trying to be just in their decisions, and we salute them for their judgment and sacrifice of time. This summer also holds the promise of the ACL Institute in Memphis and the NJCL convention in Las Vegas (!), but we realize that September will be here soon enough. Mark your calendars for our fall CAV meeting on Saturday, September 14 at the University of Virginia and October 3-5 for the FLAVA conference in Williamsburg. We also look forward to our 2014 spring meeting at my alma mater, The College of William and Mary. It is my continuing honor to serve as president, but it is through the efforts of so many giving people that we are strong. One of the greatest compliments we received at this recent meeting came from Lora Holland who realized she did not have enough handouts. “Oh, I should have known,” she said. “This is Virginia.” Yes, it is. And thank you all for making us what we are. Ex animo, Margaret 2 The CAV News 2012 - 2013 CAV EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE TREASURER’S REPORT Submitted by R.
