SSR MUSIC. FILM. GAMES. EDUCATION 2016/17 COURSES & INFO SSR MUSIC. FILM. GAMES. EDUCATION Why SSR — The average person spends 47 years at work. At SSR, we believe you deserve to spend that time working in your dream job, and we are committed to giving you the skills, experience, contacts and opportunities to achieve just that. Established for over 30 years, we have seen the industry grow and technologies evolve. We are committed to adapting to these changes; our purpose built facilities, professionally active tutors and creative partnerships allow us to offer the most up to date and relevant training and provide you with real-life connections and opportunities. www.s-s-r.com SSR OFFERS CREATIVE LEARNING; CREATING MUSIC, FILM & GAMES PROFESSIONALS ALL OVER THE WORLD Campuses & Exchanges — MANCHESTER JAKARTA SSR Manchester is the company HQ and remains the largest of the SSR campuses, housing recording studios, post production suites, a live venue, film studio, radio studio, DJ booths, computer suites and a student lounge. Built over four storeys, SSR Manchester continues to expand and upgrade at a breathtaking pace. Formed in Indonesia’s capital in 2011, it didn’t take long for SSR Jakarta to establish itself as a leading name in creative media education in Asia Pacific. The auditions of Indonesian Idol and The X Factor Indonesia are held on campus, and two of our SSR students made it to the finals. Our school is equipped with impressive facilities including purpose built, high spec studios, live venue, film studio with green screen and even a make-up room. As with all SSR centres, tutors are industry-active professionals with the experience and connections to help you succeed. EXCHANGES LONDON If being in a creative hub is any indication of a great student experience, then you can’t get better than Camden Town. Based in the old Collard & Collard piano factory, SSR London is in the heart of Camden, a booming creative community and one of London’s most vibrant districts. Our London campus is kitted out with recording studios, post production suites and DJ booths, and has an energetic vibe to match its exhilarating surroundings. A great benefit of having multiple campuses is that our students can partake in exchanges. Students from our UK campuses can travel to Jakarta to study for a week or two and vice versa. There is no charge for an exchange but students have to pay for their travel and accommodation. The low cost of living in Jakarta (not to mention the great food and weather) make it an appealing option for our UK students. STUDENT PROFILE Pete Seddon Music Production & Sound Engineering I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world, from Bosnia to Japan and the States. It’s been a good ride, and I can’t think of any other job that would have given me the opportunities and experiences that I’ve had. The pay is good and the lifestyle is nice too. One trip that springs to mind was last year. Franz Ferdinand and I were travelling across Europe on a private plane. We’d take transport straight to the runway onto private air strips and head off. I’m usually found mixing sound for the bands on stage and I’ve been lucky enough to work with equipment from some of the best manufacturers; also working as a rep for them to come up with ideas for the next generation consoles. Pete Seddon STUDENT PROFILE Gina Lally Radio Production FdSc I chose SSR because of its outstanding reputation; I knew the tutors that would be teaching me are in the media industry and that the knowledge and experience I would gain from them would be priceless. Whilst studying, I have met lots of people in the media industry and have been fortunate enough to have a rapport with them. This has led to some great work opportunities with BBC Radio Manchester and BBC Introducing. I’m currently working at Global Radio, editing and creating podcasts for XFM Manchester, Heart Manchester and Capital. Gina Lally Course Categories — ACADEMIC COURSES SSR’s academic courses are Degrees and Foundation Degrees written and delivered in association with our university partners, including The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), The University of Bolton, Buckinghamshire New University and Accrington & Rossendale College. INDUSTRY COURSES Our industry courses are designed for those not wishing to follow an academic route. Whilst there is plenty of theory content, the vast majority of assessments are based on the practical work that you produce throughout the course. Many of these courses assume no previous experience and because they are practically based, they have no formal entry requirements. These courses are also popular with industry professionals who require further training and offer evening study options, allowing them to fit around work commitments. Applications for our industry courses are made directly to SSR. SHORT COURSES We offer a range of software and introductory courses from 2 hours to 12 weeks in duration. These include certified Pro Tools, Logic and Ableton courses, DJ taster sessions, mixing and mastering crash courses and more. SSR’s flexibility allows me to work unsociable hours whilst still studying which is perfect for my line of work. Thanks to SSR’s contacts and the self-promotion guidance they have given me, I have been interviewed and featured with Chew.tv and have secured residencies with two London based record labels. I’ve also had the opportunity to play various venues like Ministry of Sound, Rhythm Factory and Proud Camden. I also have bookings for Egg and Lightbox and the possibility of DJing abroad next year. I cannot recommend SSR enough! Erron Wellington Working with the industry — Right at the very core of SSR’s philosophy is the belief that to train people for industry, you need to work with the industry. SSR strives constantly to build and expand our network of “Creative Partners” — companies with whom we enjoy a mutually beneficial relationship. Our creative partners work with us in a number of ways. First and foremost they help us review our courses — pointing out any content that needs to be added or updated. They also offer placements to students. Many of our courses have a work placement module and our creative partners prove to be invaluable in assisting with this. Many of our partners regularly visit SSR to participate in guest lectures. These are normally offered as bonus lectures to students from all our courses. Another popular activity offered by our creative partners is field trips. Students go backstage at major concerts, visit recording studios and much more. Some of our creative partners also donate equipment to SSR and offer discounts to our students. A SELECTION OF OUR CREATIVE PARTNERS — Tutors — One of SSR’s greatest strengths is our staff. All our tutors are industry experts and remain active in their respective fields. Please visit our website for a full list of tutors and staff. STUDENT PROFILE Lucy Milligan 3D Film Production BSc Hons We took a trip to the S3D Conference in Liege last December. It was a great experience and we made some great contacts and learnt a lot. I’d always had an interest in film and when I heard about the course I thought it sounded like an amazing opportunity. Learning the basic principles of 2D filmmaking in first semester was so helpful and now I’ve just finished working on a fifteen minute 3D film with other people from the class. Studying at SSR has been a real pleasure, the staff and tutors are very supportive and have been available to help throughout the year. Lucy Milligan We’re here to help — If there is anything you would like to know about SSR, our courses, or indeed any way you feel we may be able to help, please do not hesitate to contact us. Whilst our open events are probably the best way to get a great taste of SSR life, we understand that not everyone can make it to one of them. So if you’d prefer to book a private one to one tour, we will be only too happy to oblige. We also offer a free course consultation service. This involves a relaxed and informal chat with a member of staff to discuss your aspirations, previous experience and your preferred learning style. We will then give you an honest opinion as to which of our courses (if any) might be right for you. For both private tours and consultations you are welcome to bring along a friend, partner and family members if you wish. On occasion, we can even arrange for you to sit in on a lecture free of charge giving you a first-hand insight into our training. So if any of the above appeals to you, or if you have a question you think we can answer, please phone or email your chosen SSR centre. We would be delighted to hear from you.
