 Social studies is the study of how
people live and organize themselves
in society, embracing geography,
history, economics, and other
subjects.
So what does that really mean!?
The purpose of Social Studies?
 The primary purpose of social studies is to help
young people develop the ability to make educated
and reasoned decisions for the public good as
citizens of a culturally diverse(different), democratic
society in an interdependent world.
What will I study as a 6th grader in Social
Studies?
 Europe, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean,
and Australia
But what will I study about these parts of the
world??
 Geography

 Government/Civics
 Economics

 Government/Civics—The people and groups
within a society that have the authority to make laws,
to make sure they are carried out, and to settle
disagreements about them.

 Economics—The study of how resources are
