MIC-IT welcomes the Media
O
n July 22, MIC-IT welcomed members of the media to
have breakfast with its Chairman, Board of Directors and
other key personnel. Media personnel also got the opportunity
to tour the Workshop and Plastics Department. Representing
the Training Division, Programme Managers for the HYPE,
MuST, ICP, NSDP presented the benefits of skills education
and technical and vocational training for the nation’s youth.
MIC-IT also took the opportunity to promote its Construction

Referred to as the best kept secret in Trinidad by media onlookers, MIC-IT made a lasting impression especially for its

STAFF NEWS / NEW STAFF INITIATIVES
EAP - Benefits, Services, How to Access
T
he workplace is a common
source of stress for many. It
is impossible to have a workplace
where roles, expectations, and
personalities work perfectly together,
without conflict. Whether one is
unhappy about something that is
personal or work related, it’s a good
idea to try to sort out problems
early on. If unresolved quickly,
this could affect one’s behaviour,
attitude, work relationships
and eventual productivity.
Some employees may find that
discussing stress or challenges is
helpful to them both professionally
and personally. To resolve a problem,
employees have many avenues at
their disposal both informal and
formal. Confidential discussions
can be held with supervisors,
managers, mentors or HR personnel.
Our Human Resources (HR)
Department would also like to remind
All Staff of its Employee Assistance
Programme (EAP), a free and
confidential Counselling service.
g
n
i
Com on
So
Staff can access the following
services provided under the EAP:
• Assessment (to determine
the nature of the problem)
• Short Term Counselling
(Therapeutic intervention)
• Referral
• Follow-up
• Consultation
• Trauma Management: Individual
(witnessed or experienced
traumatic events)
• At the end of each
session, the next
appointment will be
given to the employee
by the Counsellor.
• The employee then
informs HR at Ext. 3204
of the appointment.
• Confidentiality is
paramount in the
entire process.
Time-off (with pay) is given for
each of the sessions. However, the
employee must account for the
time-off by completing an Application
for Leave form, signed by Manager/
Division Head for verification.
How can employees
access the EAP?
• Make a written request (give basic
information on the issue at hand)
to your Manager/ Division
Head, which they must initial.
• Manager will forward request to
HR Department for processing.
• HR will contact the EAP
provider and arrangements
will be made for counselling.
• The employee will be informed
by HR of the first appointment.
Employees can choose an
EAP Location that is closest
and most convenience to
them to conduct sessions:
TRINIDAD: Port of Spain, Sangre
Grande or San Fernando
TOBAGO: Scarborough

This is in keeping with the
entrepreneurial model to provide
them with hands-on experience

It is anticipated that this project will
be completed in January 2017 and
will provide a relaxing environment

connection with MIC-IT. In 1994,
he initiated the adaptation of
the German Model of Technical
Training and the establishment of
the National Skills Development
Programme (NSDP), which have
served MIC-IT and the country
exceptionally well, up to today.

Communication teachers at MIC-IT. She taught
General Draughtsmanship, Dressmaking & Design
at the Diego Martin Technology Centre. She was a
disciplinarian who demanded and received utmost
respect from her trainees. She shared few light
moments with them but for the most part, it was
straight classwork. All in all, she desired the best results for her students
– she wanted them to excel in performance while shining with respect.

Exciting Tech News
2017 marks a new and exciting,
technological time for the staff and trainees
of MIC-IT. Staff can look forward to the
new Human Resource Information
System (HRIS) in the first quarter of
2017, which will allow staff to update their
employment record, make requests for
leave, job letters, print pay slips etc.
Kudos to the newly implemented
Payroll System, which makes
Payroll easier to manage.
The IT department has also started rolling
out the new Time and Attendance
system via the Sierra Time Clock.
This will be installed throughout
the entire organization and will now
require FOUR fingers to be finger printed.
IT also took the lead in the installation of
CCTV cameras at the Penal and
Diego Martin Technology Centres.
Tobago and O’Meara Centres are
next to be outfitted in January 2017.
Later this year, IT will also be implementing
a new system to manage the Student
Management process. This will allow
Trainees to apply for our programmes online,
view their results, programme schedules etc.
Another piece of exciting news for ALL staff
is IT’s development of a Corporate Intranet
to improve the company’s internal
communication. This new Intranet will
quickly disseminate information, alerts
and corporate updates to employees.
The department has grown and better
restructured to support these initiatives, all
the members of the IT team are committed
to the success of these projects for a more
efficient, and more connected MIC-IT.
