PLANT A RADISH. GET A RADISH.
NEVER ANY DOUBT…
The Fantasticks was the first Broadway musical I remember seeing as a child, and after that,
my sisters and I would run around the house singing the lyrics “Plant a carrot, get a carrot,
not a brussel sprout, that’s why I love vegetables, you know what you’re about!” at the top
of our lungs. At the time, I didn’t really understand the greater implication of the song, the
difficulty of raising children, and how it related to the theme of the show, but I certainly
loved the song, and I still do!
OUR LEADERS
Perhaps because of that song, or perhaps because I want to change the color of my thumb
from black and blue (I’ve never been much for gardening) to green, I want to plant a
garden this year. Lately, I’ve been reading and listening to reports on the radio about both
sustainable gardening and edible landscaping, and I am inspired to plant. I’ve never done
anything like this before, and I have to admit that I am a little nervous about how to go
about doing it. So, I’ve been talking to the experts (friends) and I’m learning the essential
aspects of where to place the garden for the best sun exposure, what to plant, how to grow
organically, and most importantly how to keep the animals out of my vegetables.
The congregation where I grew up in Seattle was situated on top of a hill, and just below
the property line was a public garden. Families from the neighborhood each had their
own plot, and I watched as the lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers grew. Even though the
garden wasn’t a Temple project, I always associated it with Temple life. I’m sure you can
imagine my thrill when I discovered at a recent staff meeting that Temple Israel is planning
a garden—our very own vegetable garden and it even has a name: The Garden of Mitzvot!
We will grow vegetables here on our property, distribute them to families in need, and use
them to decorate our sukkah come fall.
The mission of our Temple garden is for “the enjoyment and satisfaction of connecting with
nature to provide for those in need by producing maximum quantities of fruits and vegetables
using organic methods. This garden is meant for everyone to enjoy, regardless of your skill,
ability, age. The produce will be distributed by Temple Israel on a confidential basis.”
A Garden of Mitzvot indeed! I can’t wait for our
project to begin, and I can’t think of a better way
to start the summer. Please join us in our garden,
bring your family and your friends, and together we
will literally plant the seeds of tikkun olam. I was
recently reminded that the world was created in a
garden, what better a place to begin to heal the world
again by feeding our community, planting for the
future, repairing our world, and helping me to find
my green thumb.

UPCOMING EVENTS
“Kol Yisrael aravim zeh ba-zeh”
All Israel is responsible for one another.
(B. Shevuot 39a)
While many of you were listening to the stormy weather that shook the
Oakland county area on Saturday night, a bunch of us couples were listening
to loud sounds of balls rolling down lanes, the striking of pins and shouts
of “STRIKE, SPARE, OY A GUTTER AGAIN!” The Couples Club had
their second event on Saturday, April 25th at Langan’s Bowling Alley. We
spent the evening mingling, eating and drinking and of course bowling. The
committee creatively had everyone bring a tie to the event and when picked,
decided whom each couple was bowling with, switching lanes every frame
so everyone had a chance to bowl with different couples. This turned out to
be a fabulous event whether you were a champion bowler, or just trying to
hit a few pins. A good “Tie-m” was had by all!

UPDATE FOR E-Vents
TEMPLE LIFE
Last month the new one-page Upcoming Events mailer was introduced as a
replacement for the mid-month packets which consisted of individual flyers
for upcoming Temple events.
Temple Israel has now introduced the new E-Vents e-mail as a more efficient,
economical and ecologically friendly form of communicating with our
members. The new bi-weekly e-mail contains the same information as our
previous mid-month packets. These e-mails contain clickable links to full
event information.
If you prefer to receive the E-Vents e-mail and you haven't already
updated your e-mail information, you will need to contact Sara Goldberg at
248-661-5700 or [email protected].

time, your ink cartridge, which
would otherwise have ended up in
a landfill, will now be recycled.

How Long Items Take To Decompose in Landfills.
After reading the examples below of how long items take to decompose in our

As we strive to be environmentally
and fiscally responsible, Temple
Israel college students received an
“electronic package”, instead of
the traditional box of Matzah and
candy. The package included a
Passover greeting from the clergy,
a donation in their honor to Yad
Ezra, as well as a study break
gift card from Amazon.com. We
received terrific feedback from our
students; here is a sample of what
some of them had to say:
“Thank you and everyone at
Temple Israel so much for sending
me an E-Passover Package. I really
appreciate you making a donation
to Yad Ezra in my honor. I think
e-packages are a great way to help
the environment and cut back on
unnecessary costs in this economy.
It is so nice of everyone at Temple
Israel to send these packages to all
the students while we are at school.
Thank you again for sending me
the package and the Amazon gift
certificate. I am so excited to use
it toward an art book I have had
my eye on.”
~Rachel Orloff,

“I love my Amazon study break
gift card! What a great idea to do a
virtual package…eco-friendly and
saves money!”
~Alyssa Cantor,
University of Michigan 2010
“I think that donating money
to Yad Ezra is an absolutely
fantastic idea! Not only are you
showing my generation how to be
fiscally responsible but donating
the money also shows us how
important it is for the community
to ban together this year. Kudos
to the staff for making such an
appropriate decision as far as gift
giving goes.”

JACOB ATEM – LOST BOY OF SUDAN
Please join us for a special evening, on
Friday June 12, 2009 at 7:30 PM
TEMPLE LIFE/TEMPLE YOUTH
as we welcome Jacob Atem to our Kabbalat Shabbat Services.
Jacob will speak about his experience as one of the “Lost Boys of Sudan.”
At a very early age, thousands of young boys (6 or 7 years old) left Southern
Sudan and fled to Ethiopia to escape death or induction into slavery. They
walked a thousand miles through lion and crocodile country, eating mud to
stave off thirst and starvation. Wandering for years, half of them died before
reaching the Kenyan refugee camp. The survivors of this tragic exodus became
known to the world as the “Lost Boys of Sudan.” In 2000, the U.S. government
began bringing the Lost Boys of Sudan to America.
Jacob co-founded the Southern Sudan Health Care Organization which
supports the people of Southern Sudan by providing healthcare facilities,
education in healthcare and sanitation, and assists in the provision and delivery
of healthcare supplies.
PLEASE BRING BUTTONS! We will have a drop box just outside of services
this evening, to collect buttons. The buttons will go to an amazing project
at Frost Middle School in Livonia. The school will be working with an artist
to create murals from the button collection, which will be hung around the
school as a reminder of peace and friendship, kindness and compassion.

TEMPLE YOUTH/LIBRARIES & MEDIA CENTER
It has been so much fun working
with JYFTI456 this year. We have
had some great times! It is hard to
believe that the school year is over
and summer is here. Over the past
year JYFTI456 has gone apple
picking, swimming at the JCC,
roller skating at Bonaventure, to see
a movie and has made blankets for
homeless children. Our year would
not have been so successful if it
were not for the help of our JYFTI
families. Thank You!
In May we had our first annual
“End of the Year Blast” at the
Walled Lake Outdoor Education
Center. We spent the day
challenging ourselves on the
climbing wall, high ropes course,
the zip line and playing teambuilding games. A special thanks
to the YFTI board members that
joined us for the day.
Now that the year is over, it is time
to start thinking about next year.
We already have some great things
planned for the fall.

Dear Parents,
“Art with a Heart”, this year's Tzedakah Fair gave both children and parents
an opportunity to respond to the great need in our community. Beautiful,
original, creative work lined our hallways. Individually matted works of art
from our children provided both a learning experience as well as a “giving”
experience. Generous parents purchased their child’s work knowing that the
Tzedakah money was being donated to the Temple’s Caring Committee.
Naturally, we celebrated with a “wine” (grape juice) and cheese party!!!!

entries that could not go without acknowledgement. Noah Arbit for his short
story entry and Sarah Levett for her poem, both 8th grade students.
7th and 8th grade students are asked to submit an original poem or short story
which focuses on a Jewish topic of social, ethical or religious content. A panel of
educators chooses the recipient of the award. We congratulate Brandon, Noah,
and Sarah and thank them for their moving and insightful submissions.

TEMPLE ISRAEL TREASURES SCHOLARSHIPS
Throughout our congregational history, Temple Israel has been proud to ensure
that no student will be denied the opportunity to travel and attend conferences
because of financial hardship. Temple Israel Treasures played an important role in
fulfilling that promise this year by helping students attend the NFTY convention in
Washington DC. Because of the scholarships awarded by Treasures, our commitment
of continuing the Jewish education of our youth has been fulfilled.
The following excerpts from thank you letters express well the impact this trip has on
those involved.
Thank you very much for your generous donation. Without your contribution, I
would not have been able to attend. The experience was truly unique and worthwhile.
This trip allowed me to delve deeper into my Jewish community and I am so proud
to be so involved.
We would like to thank you for your donation towards the NFTY trip. We had an
amazing time and it was a great learning experience. We attended classes, learned
about Judaism, sang in services and visited sites. It was definitely a great four days
neither of us will forget.
Thank you for an eye opening experience that I could not have comprehended
without the opportunity to experience it, to be in the presence of nearly 1000 Jews
was astonishing, moving and extremely meaningful. I enjoyed the many activities
and workshops that were available during the weekend.

Thank you for helping to fund my NFTY experience. I had a blast and learned a

Thank you for your generous donation. Because of it, I was able to attend an
amazing program where I met hundreds of Jewish teenagers from across the country.
It also gave me the opportunity to become closer with the people from Temple.

TREASURES
Thank you for the opportunity that you gave me. It was one that I will never forget.
It's because of generous groups like yours that the Jewish community continues to

Giving Opportunities
THANK YOU SISTERHOOD!
Temple Israel is honored to announce that Sisterhood will be sponsoring the outdoor Onegs for the much anticipated
summer services. Weather permitting, the first outdoor service will be June 26 and will continue throughout the summer,
concluding on August 28. The outdoor Onegs will follow the Friday evening services and will take place on the new
patio which was donated to Temple by Sisterhood in 2008. Many thanks to Sisterhood for their continued generosity
and commitment to Temple!
The scrip program with Hiller’s Markets continues to strengthen
with over 500 cards now in circulation with Temple Israel members
and friends. How powerful is this simple fundraising program?
If each of those families spent just $100 a month at Hiller’s, it would
result in a $2500 donation from Hiller’s to Temple Israel each month.
This equals $30,000 a year that would go towards helping Temple
Israel families who are struggling with job loss, foreclosure and other
personal crisis. And it doesn’t cost you a penny!
If you are one of those 500 people who have a scrip card, please
take the few extra seconds it takes to first load money on your card
and then use it to purchase groceries at Hiller’s. It’s the easiest way
possible to help Temple Israel help others.
If you don’t have a card, please contact Karla Barnett, 248-661-5700,
or e-mail her at [email protected] to receive your scrip card.
It truly is the “no-brainer” fundraiser. To all those who are using
your cards – THANK YOU! Hiller’s has already donated over
$1500 to Temple Israel. Many thanks to Hiller’s Markets and all the
scrip participants!

You have touched my heart and soul
with your kindness. I truly hope
that you and your family had a
wonderful Passover.
Dear Kari~
I would like to thank you and
Temple Israel families first for the
gift card that was very needed and
appreciated. Second, thank you for
inviting us to join the Temple Israel
Sedar. The evening provided my
small family with a very festive and
wonderful evening. We enjoyed
being a part of a very large and fun
loving family.
