SAFARI CAMP AT THE VIRGINIA ZOO VIRGINIA ZOO SAFARI CAMPS Dear Parent, During Summer Safari Camps the Virginia Zoo gives campers the opportunity to spend time among amazing animals from across the globe. Each week is an exciting new adventure as we explore the wonderful world of animals. The Virginia Zoo offers two different camps for each age group so children can attend more than one session of camp. The different camps are designed to complement and build upon each other. Summer Safari is for students who are entering first grade through eighth grade in fall 2016. Choose from nine weeks of full-day (9 a.m. – 4 p.m.) sessions. Parents of kids entering into kindergarten in the fall of 2016, look into the Virginia Zoo’s Early Explorers summer program! SESSION 2: July 11-15 SESSION 3: July 18-22 SESSION 4: July 25-29 SESSION 5: August 1-5 SESSION 6: August 8-12 SESSION 7: August 15-19 Safari Camp Information n DRESS: All Summer Safari camp participants receive two Safari Camp shirts and must wear them every day of camp. Additional shirts will be available for purchase. SESSION 8: August 22-26 SESSION 9: August 29-September 2 n LUNCH: Campers must bring their lunch each day, as there will not be an opportunity to purchase food. We encourage campers’ lunches be waste-free and packed in reusable containers whenever possible. Refrigeration is not available; however, all lunches are kept in an air conditioned room. Campers are able to recycle paper, aluminum and plastics. Please do not use glass containers. n INSTRUCTORS: Safari Camp instructors are thoroughly prepared to provide your campers with an awesome week of camp! They are all excited to share animals and nature with kids of all ages and trained in interpretive techniques, childhood development, group organization, and other camp management skills. Summer Safari After Camp The Virginia Zoo offers after camp until 5:30 pm daily. This time offers more Zoo learning and hanging out with your favorite instructors! PRICES AND REGISTRATION: Full week: $150/members & $200/non-members Per day: $40/member & $50/non-member Any campers not picked up by 4:15pm will automatically be placed into Summer Safari After Hours and charged. Drop off starts at 8:45 am. Pick up ends at 4:15 pm. Campers not picked up by 4:15 pm will automatically be shifted into the After Camp program. 1ST AND 2ND GRADE CAMPS HIDE AND SEEK Some animals blend in and some were born to stand out! This week campers learn about bright warning colors, the perfect camouflage, and everything else in-between. Come explore how animals use stripes, spots, and signals to survive. Learn about how animals are able to find friends and hide from foes! Sessions: 1, 3, 6, 9 THE FAST AND THE FURRIEST What animal is the fastest on land? Who can dive the deepest in the sea? Come learn all about the biggest, brightest, and best that the animal kingdom has to offer in this exhilarating week of animal extremes! Sessions: 2, 5, 7 3RD/4TH GRADE CAMPS MYTHS AND MONSTERS Dragons, unicorns, and sea monsters ahoy! Campers will meet modern-day “monsters” and learn the stories that surround them. We will explore the magic and myth of the past and create our own stories along the way. Sessions: 1, 5, 8 PAWS, CLAWS, AND JAWS Ready to delve into the world of wild senses, crazy defenses, and hidden pretenses? Come learn about the many amazing ways that animals have adapted to live in their unique habitats. From powerful paws to razor-sharp claws, learn how animals use these fierce adaptations to survive. Sessions: 2, 4, 6 5TH/6TH GRADE CAMPS ZOOCRAFT: BUILD THE ZOO Budding Zoo architects look no further! In this exciting week campers will learn all about how the Zoo creates unique exhibit homes for each kind of animal. From feeding animals to giving them the proper spaces and toys, we will learn, then we will create! Campers will build their own models of Zoo exhibits and show them off at an end-of-week exhibit fair. Sessions: 3, 7 ZOORASSIC EXPLORERS Become a science voyager and learn about the wild world around us, past and present. All week campers will follow in the footsteps of famous explorers, archeologists, and adventurers, and make a few amazing discoveries of our own! Sessions: 4, 8 7TH/8TH GRADE CAMPS JUNIOR ZOOKEEPERS Have you ever wanted to know if you have what it takes to be a zookeeper? Come find out with this in depth look at everything zookeepers do from feeding animals and cleaning exhibits, to conservation and animals research. Campers will get down and dirty as we scoop poop and take care of our animals here at the Virginia Zoo. Sessions: 3, 9 AGENTS OF G.R.E.E.N. There’s a marvelous world around us that’s here for us to defend! Come explore ways to protect and conserve the animals and the world around us. Learn how to be an eco-hero and become the greenest teen conservationist around. Sessions: 5, 7 virginiazoo.org EARLY EXPLORERS KINDERGARTEN CAMP Early Explorers includes fun and amazing animal encounters, crafts, games, learning activities, Zoo hikes, and more, all aimed at inspiring your young ones to love animals and the environment. Not yet eligible for Early Explorers? Look into the Virginia Zoo’s Adventure Duos family camp! TIME: Camp runs from 9 am - Noon, Monday through Friday four times throughout the summer. Drop off starts at 8:45 am. Pick up ends at 12:15 pm. AGES: Early Explorers is a half-day program for Kindergarten-aged children. For purposes of this program, “kindergarten-aged” is defined as no younger than four and entering into Kindergarten in the Fall of 2016. Each day we will read different animal books and learn all about the animals in our stories. Through habitat explorations, hands-on discovery, thematic crafts, silly songs, animal encounters, Zoo hikes, and more, Early Explorers will love to learn and learn to love all of the animals at the Zoo. Storybook Safari runs 7/25/2016 – 7/29/2016 and 8/22/2016 – to 8/26/2016 SENSATIONAL SENSES We all rely on our senses, especially animals! In this camp we will see, hear, smell and feel our way about the zoo during a whole week of sensory fun. From eagles with extraordinary eyesight to snakes with spectacular smell let’s take a trip through the sssen-sational senses with amazing animals from around the whole wide world. Sensational Senses runs 7/11/2016 – 7/15/2016 and 8/8/2016 – 8/12/2016 ADVENTURE DUOS Spend a day or a whole week at the Zoo as a family! Each day focuses on a different Zoo theme and is developed to be fun for the whole family. Throughout the day there will be games, crafts, behind-the-scenes tours, hikes, and more! Registration includes one adult and one child. There must be at least a 1:2 adult to child ratio for attendance. Activities are geared to families with children aged 3-6 but can be enjoyed by all ages. DATES: June 27-July 1, 2016 TIMES: All camps run from 9 am – 12:30 pm AGES: 3 years – adult! PRICES AND REGISTRATION: Full week: $200/members & $280/non-members. Per day: $55/member & $80/ non-member. Each registration includes one adult and one child under 11 years of age. $100 to add on an additional child for the whole week ($40 for the day). $150 to add on another adult and child ($50 for the day). Maximum adult to child ratio is 1:2. 2016 Theme: It’s all in the Family! MONDAY, JUNE 27: HUNTING WITH THE PACK For many animal packs and prides finding food is a family affair. Come learn about how some of the fiercest predators from around the world hunt together. See the world as the ultimate pack animal! TUESDAY, JUNE 28: DAD’S IN CHARGE Today it’s all about dad! Come learn about amazing dads from across the animal kingdom and the important roles they play in raising their young. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29: SAFETY IN NUMBERS From herds to flocks many animals believe that sticking together is the way to go! Come to the Zoo with your own flock to learn about why animals live in groups. THURSDAY, JUNE 30: WE DON’T NEED GROWNUPS Believe it or not, some animal kids don’t need parents at all! Today we explore the world of animals that leave their young to fend for themselves and the unique ways those young survive. FRIDAY, JULY 1: MOMMY AND ME Lots of animals have a mothering instinct!
