# 13
Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Community Members,
Kindergarten Mother’s Day
“All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel
mother” (Abraham Lincoln). Such a beautiful quote and
very apt, after I had the privilege of visiting the 3 Kindy’s
today as they welcomed mothers and grandmothers to
the Mother’s Day morning tea. Watching the children, I
was instantly transported back to a time when I was a
young mum with my children singing happily to me,
before they painted my nails and slathered me with hand
cream! I have to say, it was lovely to be the one standing
back today and watching the mums and grandmas
enjoying such lovely (and lively!) singing from the
children as well as having the chance to make flowers,
necklaces, drink lemonade and have a photo in the
special “Mums photo booth” with their precious kindy
child. These are the moments memories are made of that
bring forth a smile and sometimes a nostalgic tear when
you get to be a mother of (almost) grown children. It is a
wonderful celebration in the early years and only one of
the ways that Kindy sets children up positively for future
schooling. I must say a very special thank you to the
teachers: Ms Praizelin, Mrs Clifton and Ms Hewitt and
Education Assistants Mrs Sara, Mrs Annesley and Mrs
Wilson for the wonderful organisation
of this special event. Of course, we
wish all our mums and grandmothers
a very happy Mother’s Day this Sunday
as you celebrate with your family
at home.
Friday Sport - Interschool
At the other end of the school, I was most impressed
with our upper school sporting teams who competed in
the Interschool soccer, football and netball games last
Friday. It was great to hear them supporting each other
when the game got tough and persisting when faced with
a challenge. It was lovely to see parents standing on the
sidelines, cheering for the teams as well and we
appreciate you being able to take the time to come and
watch the games. We look forward to many more
exciting sessions over the winter sports season.
Honour Certificate and Item Assembly
This Friday is our first honour certificate and item
assembly for the term and I am intrigued to see what Miss
Mildern’s class will present as they seem to be incredibly
busy and creative every time I pass by their classroom. I do
hope you will be able to join us in this school assembly to
also celebrate with the children who have strived to reach
their personal best and will be acknowledged through
receiving an honour certificate and to also see the amazing
item that I know Miss Mildern’s class is preparing!
Kiss ‘N’ Drive
And a final reminder before another week slips by – thank
you to all who use our Kiss ‘N’ Drive to collect children
after school. It really does help ease the traffic congestion
when it’s used correctly and the children can hop into
their car and be whisked away. Parking is always at a
premium with no real solutions to be had, but we do ask
that you don’t park in the driveways or on the lawns of
private residences around our school. Your cooperation in
this matter is greatly appreciated.
See you in the playground!

Soccer Strips – Thank you
Thank you to Tuart Hill Soccer club for their kind donation
of two sets of soccer strips. Our soccer team wore them
for our first Friday Sport Term 2 Interschool competition
on Friday 5 May against Hillcrest Primary.
The Tuart Hill club is a small family focused soccer club
which is run by great volunteers from the Nollamara
precinct. Without their kind support our school would
need to outlay more money to purchase new strips.
Thank you to Tuart Hill Soccer club; your generosity is
much appreciated.

Football
The football team has had a flying start to the season, beating Hillcrest 44 to 24 at Hamer Park last Friday. Captains Sam and
Will scored the opening goals for Mount Lawley, but Hillcrest was up at halftime. Excellent work from our midfielders with
Eyasu leading the way; tackling, marking and kicking long into our forward half to set up goals. Luca sped into space and
kicked to set up shots on goal. Will led from the front with a strong pair of hands taking every mark he could take. This got us
back into the game. Nathalia secured Mount Lawley the glory with a quick thinking goal. - Sam McLean
Soccer Team A
On Friday 5 May, the Mount Lawley Primary School students played their first matches of the 2017 Friday Sport - Interschool
program against Hillcrest. The Soccer A team started off the season very strong, beating Hillcrest ten goals to one. As it was
the first time some of us played together we adjusted very well and worked as a team. We were very excited to have won
the game and look forward to playing against other schools in the upcoming weeks. For all our interschool teams, our next
game will be on Friday 12 May against Hampton Primary school at their grounds from 1:30 – 2:30 pm. We hope to see some
families come and support their children if possible. - Tatjana J
Soccer Team B
The soccer game on Friday went well with, B team winning three to one. Abualhassan scored two in a row for the B team
followed by Jade with his goal. There was lots of sportsmanship on both sides. Hillcrest fought hard and were a great team
to play. Hillcrest came with injuries and Mount Lawley helped Hillcrest by supplying players to help the balance on the
soccer pitch. We all had a good time and played our best. Good job everyone. - Joshua Thomas and Robbie Wilkinson
Netball Division A
It was a tough outing for Netball. Although Hillcrest was rather rough, the Mount Lawley girls worked their way into the
game and fought back in the second half. The final score was 21-1 to Hillcrest. Next time we can work on finding space and
calling for the ball. - Heather Brodie
Mount Lawley Primary School Interschool Chess News
Last Wednesday the MLPS B Chess team played their return match against a much improved Wembley Downs
Primary School and were defeated 3-1. Congratulations to Leo Ivanovic who managed an excellent win, and wellplayed to Hock Teh, Annan Robertson and Prezley Davis. Hock engaged in a terrific battle on the No.1 board
eventually being defeated by the top Wembley Downs player, Lucas Heng. Great sportsmanship and
concentration were displayed by both teams. Our focus with the B team is to develop experience in the demands of
Interschool competition. Good luck to our undefeated MLPS A team who next week take on Scotch College at home. - Chess
Co-ordinators - Michael Richards and Jim Richards.

Mount Lawley Primary School Netball Club News
Saturday 5 May saw the official start to the 2017 netball season. Mount Lawley Primary School was represented
by five teams from Years 3 to 6. Thanks to the coaches, our teams have been training for weeks leading up to the
competitions and were all well prepared for their game. It was a beautiful sunny morning at Matthews Netball
Centre with blue sky conditions and the players arrived excitedly for their first competition. First time parents a little shell
shocked at the early timetable but after a coffee and viewing the pre-game warm ups it was all forgotten. It was wonderful
to see a lot of returning players and new players being welcomed. Mount Lawley Primary School is represented by two
mixed teams this year. Over the next few weeks grading will occur to even out the competition divisions.
The Netball Club would also like to thank the P&C for their donation of $360.00 towards the cost of new equipment and
coaching clinics for our players.
Best of luck to all of our teams for Round 2 next week!
