What`s in a Drink?

If you are going to drink, it is important to know what you are drinking
One Standard Drink is Equal To:
One shot hard
liquor (1.5oz)
One wine cooler/
Mike’s Hard
Lemonade (10oz)
One can/bottle of
beer (12oz)
As you can see one can of
beer, or one glass of wine
or one shot of hard liquor
all have the same amount of
alcohol. Many people think
that someone who drinks
hard liquor is having a
“stronger” drink—one with
more alcohol in it—than a
person who drinks a can of
beer or a glass of wine. This
just isn't true.
However, many people put
more than one shot of hard
liquor in a drink or a punch.
Often a measured shot glass
is not used and therefore the
alcohol content of these
drinks is higher. Some
mixed drinks (such as Long
Island Ice Tea, Kahula
Sombrero, or a Martini) can
have two or three shots of
hard liquor in them….so
they contain two or three
times as much alcohol.
One glass of wine
(5oz)
You can reduce your risk for problems when you drink by following a few
simple guidelines:
 Plan ahead, set your limit before you start drinking, and plan how you will get
home safely.
 Eat before and during drinking. Alternate alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic
drinks, and drink slowly, never having more than one drink per hour.
