“Manifest Destiny”: a term first coined in 1845 by newspaper editor John O’ Sullivan.
•
“America had the god given right to expand U.S. borders from “ sea to shinning sea.”
•
In the 1840s, Americans became preoccupied with expansion; westward movement was predestined by God.
•
Overall, Americans wanted to bring democracy and religion; Christianize the Native Americans (“Mission System”).
Major Reasons for Heading West
•
Free cheap land, opportunities for wealth, escape religious persecution, and find new markets for commerce.
Westward Trails (“Mountain Men” -> Fur Traders (Beaver)) -> John Jacob Astor’s American Fur Company

Santa Fe Trail: a 780 mile road from Missouri to New Mexico; one of the “first western wagon travel trails”.

Texas Fights for Independence
•
Americans outnumber Mexicans in Texas (2 to 1); leads to multiple “slavery, land, and religious disputes.”
•
In 1834, Santa Anna becomes Dictator of Mexico and wants all Texans to obey Mexican laws.
"Remember the Alamo” (Texas Declares Independence (1836))
•
Due to continued disagreements, Mexico (Santa Anna) declares war on Texas (Sam Houston).
•
At the beginning (1836), 187 Texans would be killed the Alamo (missionary); fighting for the "Lone Star Republic.”
•
With Bowie and Crockett dead, by, 1845 under Sam Houston, he will push his men and win at San Jacinto.

Slidell's Rejection: Mexico rejects Diplomat Slidell’s offer to purchase California and New Mexico due to Texas situation.
America’s Attitude Towards War
•
Southerners were in favor of the war because Texas would be considered a strong slave state in the American South.
U.S. vs. Mexico? (Mexican – American War?)

Colonel Kearny, an American general, will march west and capture New Mexico without a fight from Mexico.
•
Zachary Taylor will march to the Republic of California -> wins without a real fight from Mexico.
•
During this same year, Taylor runs and is easily elected president of the United States as a “victor without war.”

Even the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848) will be signed that sets the border at the Rio Grande; Gadsden Purchase.
