FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS About the Program Q – Can you explain the purpose of this program? A – The intent is for FIRST® teams to be able to both “do good,” by providing solutions that help the environment, and “do well” raising money to sustain their teams and grow FIRST. Q – Other organizations I am associated with also want to sell these bulbs, can they? A – No. This is for FIRST teams only. We are currently launched for FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC®), FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC®), and FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL®) team in the U.S. Q – The program is currently for United States based teams. What about other countries? A – Selling in other countries creates a unique set of concerns specific to each country. These include UL Listing, special language requirements for the boxes, unique voltage requirements, tax payments and local regulations relating to teams selling products. There are no plans to expand beyond the United States. Q – What about selling door-to-door? A – FIRST strongly advises against teams selling door-to-door. We recommend considering selling to family, friends, people at your school, and to small local businesses such as hotels or restaurants. Organized events at a local store or shopping mall have worked well for many teams. A few teams have sold to their local power companies who gave away the bulbs at events to raise interest in LED bulbs. Q – What about selling on the Internet? A – In order to maintain the intended "local" nature of the Program, teams may sell bulbs on the Internet only at an Internet site that is owned and operated by the team. This means that a team's Internet marketing and receipt of orders placed via the Internet must be limited to a website that the team owns and operates. Teams may not use eBay, Amazon, or any other website other than the team's own website. Q – FIRST suggests a retail selling price. Do teams have to sell at the suggested retail price? A – We encourage teams to sell at the suggested retail price. That said, teams are allowed to do local market research and adjust the retail price up or down if required. Please remember the concept of Gracious Professionalism® when considering pricing. Lowering your price may put other local teams at a disadvantage. Sales Taxes are included in the price, so in states with a sales tax, compare the out-the-door price with tax included. Page 1 Q – www.usfirst.org/e-wattinfo has a button for the public to be matched with a team to purchase bulbs. How does our team get on the list? A – The button takes potential customers to www.usfirst.org/firstled, where they pick a state and see a listing of teams. Once teams place an order for bulbs their team number will appear on the list within one week. An e-mail will be sent to the contact name listed on the order site. To contact the customer please use Forward or Compose a new note. Do not use reply, which would just send the note back to FIRST. Many teams use a generic team e-mail address when communicating with customers. About the Technology/Bulbs Q – Why LED Light Bulbs? A – LED bulbs are consistent with the goal of new, environmentally friendly, solutions that offer teams real fundraising potential. LED technology is the latest in residential and commercial lighting. Compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL) have been available for a number of years, but are generally considered inferior in terms of the light provided and contain mercury which makes disposal of the bulbs harmful for the environment. Our latest Cree bulbs uses 84% less energy than an incandescent bulb and are totally safe to dispose of. Q – Who makes the light bulbs? A – e-watt bulbs are produced by Cree, Inc. The bulbs are produced in Durham, North Carolina. Q – Why do the bulbs cost so much? A – LED bulbs are expensive compared to both incandescent and CFL bulbs, but this technology is vastly superior in both energy use and life. Thanks to a generous grant from Google, the team cost per bulb is significantly reduced. Q – What wattage incandescent bulbs do the e-watt saver bulbs replace? A – The Cree 800 lumen bulb directly replaces a 60W incandescent and the 1600 lumen bulb directly replaces a 100W incandescent. Q – Can the bulb be used anywhere? A – Yes, the bulb may be used almost anywhere an incandescent bulb would be used. It is suitable for damp locations, but is not for use where exposed directly to weather or water. The bulb is not intended for use with emergency exits or emergency lighting. Page 2 Q – Are e-watt saver bulbs dimmable? A –Several models of the e-watt saver have been sold since 2011. Original e-watt saver produced by Tess is not dimmable. 2nd Generation bulbs produced by Lighting Science are dimmable. The Samsung Electronics bulb introduced in April 2013 is not dimmable. Both Cree bulbs are fully dimmable. Q – How do our customers make a warranty claim? A –A detailed document relating to warranty claims is found on the team resources page. Cree offers a 10-year warranty for both bulbs. Call 866-924-3645 to process a warranty claim. See http://www.creebulb.com/Home/Warranty for additional information. Samsung Electronics bulbs are covered by a three-year warranty. Call 1-800SAMSUNG to address warranty issues. Lighting Science Group provides a five-year limited warranty for the 2nd generation bulb. Customers should call 877-999-5742 ext. 9450 to address warranty issues. 1st generation Tess bulbs had a one-year warranty, which has now expired. Q – Where can I find out more about the Cree bulb? A –Visit the Cree site at http://www.creebulb.com/Learn. The Product Video Library has an excellent short video explaining the features of the bulb. Additional Information from the Cree web site: 1. What is the Cree® LED Bulb? The lighting industry and the way people use light changed forever with the introduction of the Cree® LED bulb. For the first time, the new Cree LED bulbs provide a compelling reason to switch from energy wasting incandescent to LED. The revolutionary LED bulbs demonstrate how something as simple as lighting can have a profound effect on how people live their life. The new Cree LED bulb is what everyone has been waiting for – a bulb that looks like an incandescent, lights like an incandescent, uses a fraction of the energy, lasts for years, and is at a price people can afford. 2. Why did Cree invent and deliver the breakthrough bulb to consumers? Thomas Edison said, “There’s a better way to do it. Find it.” Cree took that challenge to heart with a great, simple, timeless design made possible through relentless LED innovation. Inventing the LED technology that delivers light like an incandescent was hard work, but designing a bulb in a formfactor that consumers trust at a price they can afford was even harder. Designed with Cree LED Filament Tower™ Technology, the Cree LED bulb represents a breakthrough in LED bulb design and performance. Unlike the large, dull glow produced by CFLs and other LED bulbs, the Cree LED Filament Tower creates the same nuance and visual texture as a traditional incandescent bulb by emulating the compact light source of an incandescent filament. Page 3 3. What makes this a breakthrough product for Cree and the lighting industry? Until the introduction of the Cree LED bulb, consumers had few options. They could keep using incandescent bulbs that provide high quality light, but waste energy and therefore cost money every minute they are used. Or they could opt for flawed alternatives. Until today existing LED bulbs could fall into two categories; good light, but expensive – or poor light, but cheaper. In all cases, they failed the consumer. Cree solved the problem! Cree LED bulbs with the Cree Filament Tower Technology breaks the $10 price barrier, looks like a typical light bulb, but works better. Cree LED bulbs save 84 percent of the energy compared to typical incandescent bulbs, are designed to last 25 times longer, and come with an industry leading 10-year limited warranty. 4. Is the Cree LED Bulb dimmable? The Cree LED bulbs are easily dimmable with most widely available standard incandescent dimmers. 5. What is the lifetime of the Cree LED Bulb? The new bulb is designed to last 25,000 hours, 25 times longer than typical incandescent bulbs (1,000 hour lifetime*) * 60-watt incandescent bulb has a typical lifetime of 1,000 hours, according to the U.S. DoE. 6. What is the warranty? The Cree LED bulbs feature an industry leading 10-year limited warranty. 7. Is the Cree LED Bulb ENERGY STAR® qualified? Cree earned ENERGY STAR® qualification for the soft white Cree LED 40-watt and 60-watt replacement bulbs. 8. Are Soft White & Warm White the same thing? Yes. Soft White and Warm White are interchangeable descriptors to indicate the color temperature of the light that the bulb emits. Soft/Warm White bulbs emit a light temperature of 2,700K. 9. What are Lumens? Light that is emitted from the light source is measured in lumens. The higher the number, the brighter the source will be. 10. What is Kelvin? The Light Appearance value on the Lighting Facts label indicates the hue and temperature of the color emitted within the light spectrum in ranging from 2700 to 6500 Kelvin. "Warm" colors have lower color temperatures (2700–3500 K). Warm/Soft LEDs create an inviting, comfortable, and relaxing atmosphere, and highlight golden and red tones to add a peaceful aura to any space. "Cool" colors have higher Kelvin temperatures (3600–5500 K). Cool/Daylight LEDs create a bright, clean, and lively mood, and inspire active areas in your home with intensely vibrant streams of light. 11. What are Watts? Watts is a measurement of energy that is required to illuminate the light source. The lower the wattage, the less energy used. LED (light-emitting diode) light bulbs are an energy and cost-efficient way to light your home. With government regulations halting the production of traditional incandescent light bulbs in recent years, new options have surfaced. The first option created was the compact fluorescent lamp, or CFL. These curly fluorescent bulbs are more energy efficient and last longer than an incandescent, but the bulb contains mercury and takes a while to shine at its brightest. LED light bulbs are even more efficient to run than CFL bulbs and are just as affordable. In addition, LED lights contain no harmful materials and provide the same amount of light as a 60-watt incandescent, using up to 85 percent less power. This helps you save on your electricity bill without compromising on the amount of light. On this site, you will find articles about LED lighting as well as reviews of the best LED light bulbs, including the Cree 9.5-Watt LED Light Bulb, the Philips LED 425264 and the G7 Power Incline LED. Ads LED Light Bulbs: What to Look For When you're shopping for an LED light bulb, it's important to find one that provides the amount of light you need, as well as the color of light you like. You'll also want to consider how the light emits from the bulb, and the dimensions of the bulb and base. Energy Specifications A standard 60-watt incandescent bulb puts off about 800 lumens. The more lumens, the brighter the light shines. LED light bulbs provide many lumens for fewer watts compared to incandescent bulbs. Since this is the case, it's better to find a bulb that has low wattage but high lumens because it will save you on your energy bill. You also want to buy an LED light bulb that offers a long lifespan. Most LED lights last up to 22.8 years, or roughly 25,000 hours. The Lighting Facts label on the package shows how long the manufacturer claims the bulb will last as well as the amount of money it costs per year to run. These numbers are based on the industry standard of using the light for three hours per day each day of the year. Bulb Characteristics The dimensions of LED bulbs are similar, but not quite the same as a standard incandescent bulb. The average diameter and length of these LED lights is similar to that of incandescent bulbs but varies depending on the model. LED lights can also be heavier than incandescent bulbs, so you'll want to be sure that your light fixture can support the extra weight. You can't enclose most LED light bulbs in a light fixture because heat decreases the life of the light bulb. If you plan to use your LED light bulbs outside, you'll first want to verify that they can withstand damp outdoor conditions. If you want to dim your lights with an LED light bulb, you'll need to have one that the manufacturer has specifically designed to perform as a dimmer. 1/15/2015 12:05 PM Cree 9.5-Watt Pros It only costs an average of $1.14 to use this bulb for a full year. Cons There is no mid-range bulb color, just soft white and daylight. Verdict 10 The Cree 9.5-Watt LED Light Bulb is an affordable, energy-efficient LED light that makes an excellent incandescent bulb replacement. $9.97 Review: If you are looking to replace your current light bulbs with something more energy efficient, seriously consider our Top Ten Reviews Gold Award winner, the Cree 9.5-Watt LED Light Bulb. This LED light gives you high omnidirectional light output while only costing a few cents per month to run. Energy Specifications: If you have ever received a huge power bill, you most likely have started to look at ways to save money and energy. One of the most common ways homeowner's waste power is by accidentally leaving a light on in a little-used part of the house, such as the basement or garage. Doing this can rack up the costs quickly. Fortunately, advances in energy-efficient LED lights over the past few years has opened up affordable opportunities for you to replace your current light bulbs. The Cree 9.5-Watt is one of the best LED light bulbs available. Shining at a comparable 60 watts and 800 lumens, this LED provides enough light to brighten up any room in your home. It is Energy Star certified and does not contain any hazardous materials or mercury. This makes the Cree a safe choice for homeowners. The best LED bulbs are long lasting, and the Cree 9.5-Watt LED has a lifespan of up to 22.8 years, which is on the high end for LEDs. This can save you a pretty penny as you won't have to buy new bulbs every year. The best advantage to replacing your current light bulbs is the amount of money and energy you can save. This 60-watt LED bulb only costs an average of $1.14 per year, if you use it for about three hours a day, seven days a week, which is typical for the industry. This is an incredible savings compared to the hundreds of dollars it costs to use an incandescent bulb over the course of a year. Because it uses such little power, you won't feel guilty if you accidentally leave it on overnight. Cree also offers this LED light bulb in 40 watts and 100 watts if you need less or more light in a room. Bulb Characteristics: The first LED light bulbs ever developed had bulky, unusual shapes, looking like a sci-fi movie prop. This was due to the large heat sinks attached to the sides that dispersed any generated heat. Fortunately, as time and technology progressed, LED bulbs began to look like normal lights and have better ways for dispersing any generated heat. Cree LED light bulbs look just like regular incandescent light bulbs, with a rounded top and smooth sides. The LED bulb measures 4.4 inches long with a 2.4-inch diameter and they screw perfectly into standard A19-sized lamp outlets. These lights, just as the best LEDs, light up instantly. This is extremely helpful as some lights, such as CFL bulbs have to warm up before they produce the maximum amount of light. This LED provides omnidirectional light, which fills the whole room with light, rather than a limited area. This makes the light produced by the Cree 9.5-Watt LED bulb seem more natural. You can purchase this LED light with a soft white or daylight color. Daylight emulates the light produced by the sun, giving you a brighter, whiter light. Daylight bulbs are recommended for areas you need to see better in, such as your kitchen or study. Soft white bulbs are ideal for bedrooms or lamps that are not providing the bulk of your room's light. The Cree 9.5-Watt LED Light Bulb is made for use either outdoor or indoor. This flexibility allows you to use the bulbs for porch lights as well as a lamp bulb. You can also use these LED lights with dimmer switches. The best light bulbs provide instant, steady light. And because LED diodes run independent of each other, you don't have to worry if one of the lights inside go out, as the rest will continue to function. LED bulbs gradually get dimmer toward the end of their life expectancy, rather than extinguishing all at once like incandescent or CFL bulbs do. Warranty & Support: Cree offers a fantastic 10-year warranty on their LED bulbs, which is nearly twice as long as the average length offered by other manufacturers. If you ever have any questions about your bulbs, you can call or email customer service representatives during regular business hours. On the company website, you can find answers to questions about LED lights, the company as well as explanations about the differences of lumens and coloring. Summary: Upgrading your lights to LED light bulbs is an excellent choice. The bulbs last longer, provide the same amount of light as incandescent bulbs all while using less energy. After the initial cost, the Cree 9.5-Watt LED Light Bulb can provide you with reliable, instant light for years to come. It's the lowest-priced LED we've seen, and is also the closest to an incandescent bulb in shape and light quality. It puts out 800 lumens of light with only 9.5 watts of power, and is backed by a 10-year warranty. Reviewers say it's slightly larger than an incandescent bulb, so it may stick out a bit in some lamps. It also doesn't work very well with a dimmer switch, doesn't always dim smoothly and can produce a loud buzzing sound. For more even light distribution, consider the Insignia A19 800-Lumen Dimmable LED (Est. $18) . It's similar to the Cree bulb in shape and light output, and has the same 10-year warranty. However, at 13 watts, it's not quite as efficient. Both professional reviewers and consumers are highly impressed with the Insignia's even light distribution and warm white light, but it tends to buzz when used with a dimmer and is not compatible with all dimmers. The 3M LED Advanced Light RRA19B3 (Est. $20) has a slightly different set of problems. It doesn't hum when used with a dimmer switch, but a couple of users say it tends to flicker. At 850 lumens, the 3M bulb is brighter than the Insignia but uses the same 13 watts of power. Professional testers give it top marks for its even light distribution, brightness and efficiency. This bulb has an estimated lifespan of 27,500 hours, but its warranty is only five years. For use in an overhead can fixture, experts recommend a floodlight or reflector bulb. LED floodlights don't receive as many reviews as standard LED bulbs, but the Cree BR30 LED Floodlight (Est. $20) wins recommendations from multiple sources. Blogger Dan Rathbun of GoodBadBulbs.com calls this "my new favorite bulb," saying the color is "perfect" and the energy-saving bulbs keep his kitchen much cooler in the summer. Users at HomeDepot.com also like the bulb's warm, bright light and energy efficiency. Most say it works well with a dimmer, but a few complain that the dimming action isn't smooth and they can reduce the bulb to only about 40 percent brightness. Like other Cree bulbs, it won't work with every dimmer switch. 1/15/2015 12:04 PM
