The Word in Our Lives:
Readings for April 9, 2017
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord
Gospel at the Procession: Matthew 21:1-11 When Jesus and the disciples drew near Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent
two disciples, saying to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find an ass
tethered, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them here to me. And if anyone should say anything to
you, reply, 'The master has need of them.' Then he will send them at once." This happened so that what had
been spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled: Say to daughter Zion, B
" ehold, your king comes to you,
meek and riding on an ass, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden." The disciples went and did as Jesus
had ordered them. They brought the ass and the colt and laid their cloaks over them, and he sat upon them.
The very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and strewed
them on the road. The crowds preceding him and those following kept crying out and saying: "Hosanna to the
Son of David; blessed is the he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest." And when he
entered Jerusalem the whole city was shaken and asked, "Who is this?" And the crowds replied, "This is Jesus
the prophet, from Nazareth in Galilee."
First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-7
The Lord GOD has given me a well-trained tongue, that I might know how to speak to the weary a word that
will rouse them. Morning after morning he opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not
turned back. I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did
not shield from buffets and spitting. The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my
face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame.
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 22:8-9, 17-18, 19-20, 23-24
Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11
Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped.
Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in
appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of
this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of
Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Gospel: Matthew 26:14—27:66

Evangelio: Mateo 26, 14–27, 66

RICE BOWL COLLECTION
40 years ago, Catholics in the United States wanted to
respond to famine in Africa. Could we feed the
hungry through Lenten prayers, fasting and
almsgiving? The answer was yes—and it came in the
form of a small cardboard box. 40 years later, CRS
Rice Bowl is your way to help our brothers and
sisters in need each Lent.
25 percent of your donations go to hunger and
poverty alleviation efforts in your own community.
For more information please contact http://
www.crsricebowl.org
The Rice Bowls and Rice Bowl envelopes will be
collected next weekend, Palm Sunday, April 8 & 9. Stewardship
The offertory collection for last week was $15,073

interrumpir. A veces uno de los cónyuges puede
hablar más que el otro. A veces uno casi no habla en
absoluto. Preste atención a sus palabras de esta
próxima semana. Y Tratar de escuchar uno al otro.
MARRIAGE MOMENTS
Research indicates that the average person listens for
17 seconds before interrupting. Sometimes one spouse
may be more long winded than the other. Sometimes
one hardly speaks at all. Pay attention to your words
this next week. Try to meet in the middle.
PARENTING POINTERS
Laughter can be healing. Does your family have any
stories about family foibles that get repeated at family
gatherings? It doesn't matter that it's embarrassing; it
becomes family mythology.

VOCATIONS REFLECTION
In today’s gospel, Jesus raises Lazarus to new life.
Through their ministry and the way they live their
lives, God calls priests, deacons, religious sisters and
religious brothers to join in His work of breathing new
life into the Church. Is He calling you to participate in
this incredible undertaking? If you think so, call or
write Father Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of
Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113;
[email protected]). Be sure to visit our website:
www.cdow.org/vocations!
BOOKS & LENTEN CDS
There are two new books in the Kiosk at St. Joseph:
Mother Teresa of Calcutta by Leo Maasburg &
Everything You Wanted to Know About Heaven by
Peter Kreeft.
And a CD Freedom Through
Forgiveness. With over 15 years of experience, Ken
Yasinski has quickly become one of Canada’s most
sought after Catholic speakers. Through clever
examples and insightful stories, Ken reveals how
each of us can obtain freedom from the burden of our
sins through the forgiveness that is readily available
in the Sacrament of Confession.
WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY
Please join us for Bible Study on Wednesday mornings
at 9:30 AM in the parish center when we break open
the Scriptures for the coming Sunday. We encourage
people to share how the readings touch their lives or to
sit quietly and listen as others reflect on them. The
conversation is easy and informative. Come when and
as often as you’d like. If you have questions please call
302-378-5800. ROSARY AT BROADMEADOW
The Rosary is prayed each Wednesday at 10:00 AM at
Broadmeadow Nursing Home. Any parishioner is

POWER OF PRAYER
Prayer is powerful…...do you have someone or
something for which you would like prayers? You may
phone the Parish Office or email your prayer requests
to Kathy Dolde at [email protected] and they will
pass them on to members of our Prayer Chain.
Parishioners are also welcome to join our prayer group.
All it involves is getting an email and praying for the
person or petition. If you are interested, please contact
Kathy.
