May 2014 Edition 70 Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea Wednesday 28th May - see page 20 for more information PROUDLY PUBLISHED AND PRINTED BY Council News May 2014 Hello Readers, Some welcome rain in the past few weeks which has seen the country respond well for those fortunate enough to receive the rain. We received Weather Warnings and big rainfall predictions last week which unfortunately didn’t eventuate throughout the Gascoyne Region. The Shire has an obligation to provide this information to residents of the Shire, irrespective of what our personal thoughts on the weather might be. It’s really a situation which if nothing eventuates we are criticized for sending out the email and if something does eventuate and we don’t sent out the email we are criticized also. Based on this when we receive warnings from Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) we will continue to send them out in the future as we are obligated to do so. Due to the wet weather the kerbing crew due to commence work on 3rd May have been delayed a week and will instead be arriving on 11th May. They will be carrying out kerbing of the new Caravan Park as well as various other kerbing around town to further improve the look of our facilities. Landscaping will commence on 11 May also with the intention to have the majority of works completed by the Official opening date now set as 14th June 2014. With regards to the Official Opening, we have the problem where we have significantly more people wanting to attend than the building is licensed to cater for and whilst we can do some things to increase capacity from a physical as well as a health perspective (removing furniture etc.) the difference still remains significant. For this reason the day will be split over two events, the formal opening of the facility will take place between 10am and 12 noon at the Tavern, this is a controlled and invitation only event or private function and whilst we have done our best to accommodate as many people as possible it just physically is not possible and some of you will unfortunately miss out on this formal event. However to cater for everyone who wants to attend the Opening of the Tourism Precinct we will have an Open Community event at the Pavilion to celebrate this which will include a Band, Licensed Bar, Activities for the Children and Great food. Camping will be available on the oval if required. Whilst the Tavern will be open, once the maximum building capacity is reached patrons will only be permitted to enter when someone exits and this will be controlled by security staff on the day / night. Patrons will be encouraged to walk between the Tavern and the Pavilion on the day to take in the new Facility as well as the entertainment and food provided at the Pavilion. Invitations and Flyers regarding this event will be posted by 19th May, should you have any queries regarding the event please call Rachael on 9943 0988. On the Staffing front, our Two German backpackers working at the Tourism Precinct have moved on to see Australia prior to returning home in late June. Casual Plant Operator, Noel Lucas has returned to Geraldton and Plant Operator and Administration Manager, Health and Rachael Funnell respectively, have taken on the job to manage Weedarrah Station within the Shire of Upper Gascoyne. I would like to thank all staff for the efforts whilst employed by the Shire and wish them all the best for the future. We are currently advertising a Plant Operator job and Administration Manager job and I am hoping to carry out interviews for these two positions within the next few weeks and appointments sometime soon afterwards. 2 Council News Recently the Roadhouse ATM was installed and is being well utilised on a daily basis which is pleasing. The Shire was recently successful in obtaining our License to sell Tobacco products and sales of Cigarettes will commence very soon also. To all the Smokers we thank you for your patience with regards to this matter. We have recently commenced work on the 2014/2015 Budget and Budget submissions for Council consideration will be called this year. If you have a Budget submission you would like to make for the upcoming year please ensure this submission is made in writing and delivered to the Shire by 5.00pm on Friday 23rd May, email submissions are preferable and should be emailed to [email protected] with “Budget Submission” in the Subject line. The Shire of Upper Gascoyne is one of very few Local Governments in Western Australia to not have a Town Planning Scheme (TPS). The Department of Planning and the Department of Local Government have requested the Shire develop a plan and have provided the necessary funding of one hundred thousand dollars to allow us to do so. Consultancy firm, GHD have been appointed by the Shire to Develop the Scheme and will be visiting Gascoyne Junction on 27th – 29th May to see the town and meet with residents of Town with regards to the Development of the Scheme and the changes this will bring to town which prior to the development of this scheme was effectively an uncontrolled environment from a Town Planning perspective. Please see the flyer on page 4 of this Gassy Gossip for additional information and if you live in Gascoyne Junction I encourage you to take the time to meet with GHD Staff members when they are in town gathering information for the Development of our new scheme. Dirk Sellenger CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER 3 4 5 6 7 What’s DPaW doing in the Shire As mentioned in the previous issue of the Gassy Gossip we were working on the installation of two new long drops at Temple Gorge campground in the Kennedy Range. Shiney excavated the holes allowing two four thousand litre tanks to be installed. Concrete pads were poured by staff and then the buildings were erected with the assistance of Andy Crook, Campground Host. This should alleviate the issues of the lack of facilities here. Campground hosts are once again set up in both Kennedy Range and Mt Augustus National Parks. Jens and Janine Guenther, (regular hosts), have just finished a month’s stint at Mt Augustus and been relieved by Ken and Pam Bradley for their first time at hosting. Across in Kennedy Range Andy and Debbie Crook have returned from last year for a 6 week placement. We thank all our volunteer hosts for their valuable assistance throughout the tourist season. By the time you receive this newsletter DPAW staff should have completed a cleanup project at Pimbee, rain allowing. This involves condensing and burying the remains of three small rubbish tips located on Pimbee. At the same time some weed and wild dog control will be carried out. While the rain can be a nuisance with affecting works programs I am sure no one is complaining. More winter rain will put us in a good position for a spectacular wildflower season. 8 9 10 11 12 Carbonara Pasta Bake 13 14 D E L L E C CAN 15 Department of Transport in your CRC In partnership with Department of Transport and the Shire of Upper Gascoyne your local CRC can now complete Online transactions for all licensing renewals etc. For every transaction completed the CRC receives a commission.
