Exclamation Point Indicates extreme pain, fear, astonishment, anger

“Wise men appreciate all people, for
they see the good in each and know
how hard it is to make anything good.”

fear, astonishment, anger,
disgust, or yelling
Don’t overuse exclamation
points! Really!! Cut it Out!!!
TEACHERS: The kinds of words we use express who we are. Have
students analyze the specific words and phrases characters in a piece of
literature use. Discuss what those words indicate about the person’s
character and attitudes.
-Have students discuss whether or not school has taught them the importance of respecting
others. If not, what can be done to teach respect of others?
-Have students write about ways a particular type of business can show respect in all aspects of its
operations, i.e., employee relations, customer service, Sales and Marketing, Research and
Development.
-Have students research the history of their school, community, or area in which they live. (Find
out if any famous people have graduated from your school, or live(d) in your community.) Have
students bring to class one object or item from their parents or grandparents’ school days to share
with others. Stories can be written to share with class. (With our multicultural society, you may
have students whose parents were unable to attend school or not finish high school, a story of how
they felt about that would be just as insightful.) (http://www.scps.k12.fl.us/curriculum/_doc/cha

There are so many posters out there that try to inspire
and invoke respect in students; but the only way that
respect can be fostered in students is for them to learn
where it is that everyone comes from. They must learn
where the people around them come from physically
and mentally; they need to recognize that everyone
around them is dealing with something. The only way
to foster respect is to encourage a deep understanding of
the people around oneself, and not just on the surface.
People need a penetrating gut wrenching awareness of
the humanness of those around us. This is where
literature comes in and sheds an unmistakable light on
the differences and flaws in every human being. It is
here, in literature, that these beautiful differences
can be safely explored; through the unique eye of
every author.

In the discussion circles we need to take the exclamation points out of our
speech toward others and their opinions.
