THE BATTLE OF VICKSBURG By Hailey THE CIVIL WAR With one shot… the Civil War began. It spanned 4 years, from April 1861 to April 1865. South–wanted slaves; North–thought slavery was wrong. One of the many battles of this war was fought in Vicksburg, Mississippi. This battle is commonly known as “the battle that won the Civil War”… WHERE AND WHEN DID THE BATTLE TAKE PLACE? The siege spanned 48 days: Start date-May 18, 1863; End dateJuly 4, 1863, which happens to be our independence day. Took place in small town of Vicksburg, Mississippi, specifically located on Champion Hill. This was a very important location, right on the Mississippi river their was a huge fortress that commanded the river in both directions. WHO WERE THE OFFICERS IN CHARGE? UNION CONFEDERATE General Ulysses S. Grant General John C. Pemberton Grant was a genius when it came to military strategy. Was considered both sophisticated, and awkward. Being a commander led to him being president later on. Born a Union man in Virginia Was so loyal to his home state, that when Virginia joined the Confederacy, so did he. Became an officer in the 4th Artillery. HOW MANY SOLDIERS WERE ENGAGED, AND WHAT WERE THE RESULTING CASUALTIES? North: started with 77,000 soldiers Together: started with 110,000 soldiers NorthKilled: 806 Wounded: 3,940 Missing/Captured: 164 Together: 37,402 casualties SouthKilled: 805 Wounded: 3,950 Together: ended with only Missing/Captured: 29,620 77,592 left unharmed South: started with 33,000 soldiers How many attempts did it take? It took them 4-5 tries They tried a diversion, it didn’t work The Confederates blocked their direct attempt Walked away and took Jackson, the capitol of Mississippi Won 5 battles along the way Couldn’t capture Vicksburg, so Grant laid siege WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE BATTLE OF VICKSBURG? Grant had tried many direct attempts, but all were blocked by rebel forces. Pemberton’s forces were greatly weakened, and so they were forced to move into a defense mode. Grants soldiers had so many deaths, he decided to lay siege, and on July 4, 1863, the rebels surrendered. How did the battle of Vicksburg impact the war overall? This battle set stage for the Confederates defeat. The south was split into 2 separate parts, which made it hard for them to fight. However, the results may have changed, had General Pemberton postponed his surrender Johnson’s forces were trooping up to help and would arrive at July 7, yet Pemberton surrendered 3 days too early.
