1 June 2016 - Siena Catholic Primary School

Term 2 Week 8
1 June 2016
From the Principal
Siena
Dear Parents
It would appear that at last we may see some cooler weather (along with some rain)
and our warmer clothes may get some use this season. Please ensure school
jumpers, pants, jackets etc. are well named – already the lost property box is filling
up with discarded items. A change in weather also often brings an increase in colds
and other infections. While we emphasise the importance of regular school
attendance, when your child is ill they need to be at home where they are able to
rest and recover. Coming to school unwell is usually unproductive and also runs the
risk of spreading infection to others.
Focus on Learning
As part of the BCE focus on learning through the Learning Collaborative, Siena staff
and students continue to look at Learning Intentions and Success Criteria. In other
words, the focus is on “What are we learning?” and ‘How do we know we have
successfully learnt it?’. There are five questions we ask students:
What are you learning? How are you going? How do you know? How can you
improve? Where can you go for help?
These questions help students to think about their learning and take clear steps to
improve and succeed. Commonly at the end of the day we tend to ask questions like
– ‘How was school today?’ and/or ‘What did you do today?’
Often the responses are short and don’t tell you very much as they are too general.
Try using the questions above and see if they lead to the sharing of some positive
information and discussion.
Catholic School Funding
Catholic schools have been educating Australian children for two hundred years and
there continues to be debate and discussion over funding. With one in five students
being educated in a Catholic school there are some important facts to be aware of.
Included with this newsletter is further information about school funding. Additional
fact sheets will be provided with the newsletters in the coming weeks.
Pick Up Area and Crossing
Thank you to all parents and carers who continue to show patience and
consideration when using the Fraser Pick Up Area. Displaying your family name on
the visor, moving up to fill the front bays and remaining with your car, all greatly
assist with the process.
Crossing to Car Park - In recent weeks there have been a number of parents crossing
the road to or from the carpark without using the designated crossing. This practice
is dangerous and it is important to remember that children observe our actions and
follow our lead. Please help us to keep your children safe and teach road safety by
using the crossing at all times.
Be the person God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire…

National Week of Reconciliation
Today at our weekly Assembly as we gather to pray for Reconciliation, we remember that May 27
and June 3 are important dates in Australia’s history. May 27 marks the anniversary of the 1967
referendum when Australians voted to remove clauses in the Australian Constitution that
discriminated against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. June 3 marks the historic 1992 Mabo decision in
which the High Court of Australia recognised native title - the recognition that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
peoples’ rights over their lands did survive British colonisation; and so we acknowledge that we gather today on the land
of the Gubbi Gubbi people and pay our respects to their elders both past and present, for they hold the memories, the
culture and the wisdom upon which our nation’s future will be built.
Blessings for your week, Jacqui Winmill


KT Dance Program
Students in Prep – Year 4 will once again be involved in an exciting dance program in Term 3. This program,
created by Katie Robertson, starts on Thursday 21 July and will run for 6 weeks. A parent presentation will occur on
the final Thursday, 1 September. The cost of this activity has already been included in your school levies. More
details to come.
School Photos
Our school photos ran extremely smoothly once again this year. Thank you to everyone for making sure your children
were dressed in full school uniform for the day. Special thanks to Mrs Carlson for all her behind the scenes organisation
for the day and to the children, for their wonderful manners and excellent behaviour over the 2 days.
Between the Flags – Siena Star Awards
This year we are trialling a different model for our Siena Star Awards. Last year the students were able to qualify for a
Bronze Award at the end of Term 2, a Silver Award at the end of Term 3 and a Gold Award at the end of Term 4. This
year we will be presenting Siena Star Awards at the end of each Semester. These awards will be linked to your child’s
Semester Report and focus on their attitude and behaviour, not their academic ability.
If your child receives one of these awards it will come home in the same envelope as their Report this Semester.
Siena Star Awards 2016
Gold Award
A student whose attitude to learning and behaviour are a positive example to their peers. They
participate fully in all aspects of school life while
consistently demonstrating respect for all members
of the school community.
These students are exemplary in their attitude and
behaviour. Most relevant effort boxes (at least 90%)
on their report would be ‘Consistently’.
Silver Award
A student who usually takes responsibility for their
own behaviour and learning. They do this by participating in all aspects of school life, demonstrating
respect for all members of the school community.
These students demonstrate the right attitude and
appropriate behaviour most of the time. Effort boxes
on their report could be a mixture of ‘Consistently’
and ‘Generally.’
Bronze Award
A student who may have required some support to
take responsibility for their own behaviour and
learning. They generally participate in all aspects of
school life and on most occasions demonstrate respect for all members of the school community.
These students demonstrate a willingness to improve their attitude and behaviour. Effort boxes on
their report would mostly be ‘Generally.’
These awards are about a student’s attitude and behaviour – not academic ability.
They are to be assigned at the end of each Semester by class teachers using their own professional judgement and the effort boxes on a student’s
report card relating to Curriculum and Personal and Social Development.
Secrets of Parenting - I came across these interesting pieces of advice on the weekend
Allow Your Kids to Be Bored
Boredom is usually seen as a negative thing, after all, surely you should be stimulating your child’s sense of creativity at
every opportunity for them to be creative? Well, boredom isn’t all that bad – it actually helps a child encourage their
ability to think. Quiet reflection is something that adds to a different perspective and gives the mind space to think up
and create activities. Don’t always feel like you have to find them something to do in case you’re not doing enough to
accommodate their learning. Boredom, in and of itself, is a time for their brains to develop and become more creative.
Encourage Your Kids to Take Risks and Fail
Although we have a natural tendency to protect our children from feeling upset, allowing your child to take risks and
failing will teach them fundamental life skills from an early age. Without experiencing failure early on, a child can
develop low self-esteem and get discouraged from creating and learning for themselves. Fear is probably the number
one emotion in our lives that can stop us from taking great actions. If we encourage our children to experience failure
when they are small, the amount of fear they develop will lessen.
Teaching a child that failure is not actually a bad thing is a great life-skill that will allow them to make smart decisions
and learn from life’s ups and downs. At the end of the day, children need to feel emotions to understand them and
protecting your child from them will only stunt their ability to adapt and make sense of the world.
Tricky Questions for Around the Dinner Table
Most weeks I am going to include in my news a tricky question (or 2) that you may like to try out on the family.
Q: What was the highest mountain in the world before Mount Everest was discovered?
A: Mount Everest. It was still the highest, it just had not been discovered!
Q: How far can a dog run into a forest?
A: Half way. Then it is running out!
All the best for the week ahead. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you feel I can support you or your children to more fully
access the opportunities we provide here at Siena.
Excursion Reminders
At the moment there are a number of year levels where parents should have received an email requesting permission
and/or payment for upcoming excursions:

What is bullying?
“What is bullying? Do we mix it up with teasing and other forms of mean behaviour?”
It’s an important topic that needs clarification. Bullying is a term that’s wrapped in emotion. For many people it’s
associated with bad childhood memories. It’s been estimated that around 40 per cent of people have experienced
bullying in the past. Unfortunately though, it is a term that is overused and can be confused with teasing.
Teasing refers to annoying, hurtful behaviour that is used to get a reaction from someone else. Teasing can be
persistent in nature, but not always. It’s generally an attempt to get under a person’s skin. It can involve name-calling; it
can be personal and hurtful in nature. It can also infringe on another person’s rights. But generally teasing doesn’t have
the key ingredients that make up bullying.
Bullying is the selective, uninvited, repetitive oppression of one person or group by another. It involves three elements
- intent to hurt or harm; power imbalance; and repetition over time. It takes many forms and guises including physical
aggression; verbal abuse; emotional aggression (or blackmail); intimidation; harassment and exclusion.
The new cyber-dimension to bullying has moved the goalpost for many kids. In the past children and young people could
escape bullying behaviours by being at home. Cyber-bullying means that children can’t escape bullies like they once
could.
We run the risk of failing to skill our kids up to manage rudeness and teasing if we categorise every awful behaviour that
kids experience as bullying. Our ability to be discerning about bullying is as important as the action we take when we are
sure that our child is on the receiving end of bullying behaviour. These actions include: dealing with feelings; providing
emotional coping skills, getting others involved; building up a child’s support networks; and building self-confidence that
can take a battering. Bullying needs to be taken seriously. But we also need to be discerning about bullying behaviours.

From the Physical Education Sports Coordinator
The Sunshine Coast Cross Country Trials were held yesterday at Maroochydore Cricket Club. Siena Primary had Matthew
Bensaci, Tanner Eves, Mack Hemming, Fey Olofinjana and Will Brown compete as members of the Coastal District Team
against the best runners from the Sunshine Coast. All of them did a great job especially Matthew Bensaci and Will Brown
who both finished second and will now go to the State Titles in Maryborough in July. Great effort to all of you!
Last week a number of our boys went to the District Rugby Union trials. Congratulations to Gerard Carmichael and Harry
McGovern who were both selected to compete at the Regional trials next term.

Tip of the week - Want more music to play? Ask for a new solo book as a birthday or special present.
Congratulations to all students who performed in the Piano Recital on Thursday evening last week and also to all
students who performed in the Woodwind and Brass Recital on Monday evening this week. You all played very well and
should be proud of your achievements. Sincere thanks to the following teachers for supporting these students – Mrs
Wordsworth, Mrs Durrer, Miss Pagomenos and Mr Wynyard.
Music facts - The following are four more interesting facts about music for you to consider.
1. Playing a musical instrument can raise your IQ up to five points.
2. Surgeons operate better listening to music.

Last Wednesday we celebrated NSS with Years 1 & 2. This is an annual, national event to celebrate reading. Children
from all around the country gathered together to listen to 'I got this hat'. Here at Siena we listened to the story and the
children thoroughly enjoyed it. You may like to show it to them again: Click Here We then made pirate hats, which you
will see in the photos. It was great to gather and share a story and have fun.
