Artist’s Note – Heather the Musical
I feel incredibly lucky to be in this production of Heathers. Not only is it one of the
most high energy, hysterical and dynamic shows I’ve ever been a part of, it has a
unique and challenging significance in my life. There are countless elements in
Heathers that I can identify with, but what resonates with me the most is the emphasis
the show has on suicide. When I was fourteen, I lost my father to suicide. He suffered
from mental illness and alcoholism for the majority of my life, but still the loss was
overwhelming. Soon after his death, I decided to get involved in the suicide
prevention community and promised myself that I would speak out about this topic
that is ignored far too often. Heathers is a piece of theatre that doesn’t shy away from
suicide, and I think it is extremely eye opening for those who don’t know much about
the topic.
Losing someone to suicide is a unique loss, and to most survivors, it is isolating. Once
suicide touches your life, you become used to people changing the subject when it’s
brought up in conversation. You become used to people feeling uncomfortable around
you when they find out it has impacted you life. The older I get, the more I realize that
isn’t because they are rude or hardhearted people, it’s because they have grown up in
a world where it’s taboo and frightening to talk about a subject like suicide. Because I
am someone who has experienced it first hand, I feel I have a responsibility to talk
about it. I have a responsibility to fight the stigma that surrounds suicide, not only for
fellow survivors, but for those who are struggling and feel that they have to suffer
alone. A few years ago, I decided to get involved so I started volunteering with The
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, an organization that raises awareness,
sponsors educational and therapeutic services, and raises money for programs to help
reduce suicide rates. I helped plan and run events for them, and eventually became the
co-founder of their Junior Executive Board in New York City. I’ve connected myself
with the Michigan chapter of AFSP and have even become an advocate for other
Lansing-based organizations like Silence Shoot, a powerful photo shoot project aimed
to show support for victims of bullying and suicide. I’ve immersed myself in a
community where you are encouraged to talk about suicide and depression, and I’ve
found that most people are willing to listen if you tell them your story.
Heathers is such a special opportunity for me, because not only am I am able to
pursue my passion for acting in a show that I absolutely adore, but I get to showcase a
topic that is so close to my heart. I get to use art to encourage people to talk about
issues that are too often thrown to the side because of fear or a lack of information. I
admire Heathers because of its fearlessness to explore dark topics. It forces you to
examine suicide and other vital issues like bullying and violence, that are as real in
Lansing, Michigan today as they are in this show. It is my hope that in the midst of
this exciting and compelling show, my hometown will be inspired to think of suicide
in a different light. And that, will be beautiful.

“I’d like to thank the entire team that has helped bring Heather’s
to the PCTC stage. John Dale Smith, your passion for the work has
been a testament to the area for years. Karyn Perry, you create an
energy of fun, warmth, and honesty that drives this show. Ashley
Ault, thank you for your focus, foresight, and overall sanity. Also
thank you to all of the designers. Your commitment to your art

collective and I’m incredibly proud of the work put forth by the
entire cast and crew."

another debut with Peppermint Creek Theatre Company as the

John Dale Smith (Music Director/Conductor/Pianist) - is well
known in the Mid-Michigan area as a conductor/pianist and
producer of musical events and musicals. He is the leader of the
newly formed World Class City Band, the John Dale Quintet and
co-leader of J & J Sounds. John Dale received a Bachelor of Music
degree in piano performance from Bowling Green State University

large and wonderful team's endless effort, and is grateful for
another opportunity to do what he loves with great people.
Khamil Hendrickson (Scenic Carpenter) - Khamil is a bright,
talented boy with much talent. If you have seen something
recently on which Nick has worked, it is more than likely
something that Khamil actually did but Nick took credit for.
Seriously, like since high school, Nick even tried to take credit for
Khamil's knockout role as Coalhouse Walker in East Lansing High
School's 2009 production of Ragtime.
Morgan Bowen (Costume Designer) - Morgan has reluctantly
agreed to re-enter the theater world after Blake shamelessly
pleaded (on his knees) for him to work on costuming and
wardrobe. Many moons ago, Morgan costumed shows you have
never heard of and very few people saw in offoffoffoffoffoff
Broadway. Like really off. He is pleased to again work with Blake,

supporting local theatre.
