Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa,
(Greetings to you all)
Welcome back to term 3 to all our students and a warm welcome to the new families joining us this term. We have had a
fantastic start to the term with our annual Science Fair where we have been wowed by the breadth and depth of thinking
involved. Congratulations to all students who got their projects completed. This week is te wiki o te reo Māori and we have
been doing some special activities around this – there is more on both of these topics below.
We look forward to welcoming back our New Caledonia travellers tonight who, by all accounts, have had a wonderful time.
Fitness levels are improving as students prepare for our school cross country on Thursday 6th August and for a number of
students competing in the AIMS games which is a very prestigious sports competition for Year 7 and 8 students, being held
in Tauranga starting 6th September.
Our major theme for this term is communication. Students will be engaged in a wide range of learning activities related to
this theme including speeches and debating. As always we expect our students to continue to be safe, to be respectful and
to be learners.
We are holding a Teacher Only Day on Monday 10th August to do
some very important curriculum development work. Please make
arrangements for your child/ren for that day.

This week is the Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2015 with the Māori Language Commission encouraging families to
korero Māori at home. We will put a new sentence in the newsletter each week which you might like to use with
your children. This week’s sentence – “Haramai, e te tau!” which means “Come here, my darling!” – Haramai is
the ‘come here’ part and e te tau means ‘darling’
TE AUTE COLLEGE COMES TO TIS – A ROUSING HAKA
“Yesterday, I learnt quite a large amount about the Haka and overall Māori culture. When I
performed some of the Haka the staunch, upright nature became quite apparent when in action.
Respect for the dance was mandatory and felt right to be so. The movement seemed stiff and very
jolty, yet the actions appeared to be fluid and seemed to flow perfectly with one another. There
seemed to be a higher spiritual element of the dance with the boys hammering us with the words
“your ancestors are watching”. Though I am a person with no religious affiliations or beliefs, I
really could understand that sort of spirituality within that dance.”

SCHOOL SCIENCE FAIR
Congratulations to the 120 students who had their Science Fair Project on display in the School Hall. The projects
were of an extremly high standard which made the judging very difficult. Winners will be announced and prizes
presented at the School’s next assembly to be held Friday, 7th August.
Our thanks go to all parents, caregivers and teachers for their support of our students with these major projects.
GIVE IT BACK – SPECIAL PROGRAMME
Last Thursday 23 eager TIS students went to different organisations around Taradale as part of the Give it Back
programme. This is designed to give back to the community in which our young people live. Taradale High School,
Taradale Primary, Arthur Miller, Reignier and Greenmeadows Schools, Atawhai Residential Care and Bryant House
were the lucky recipients of our hard working students. From stripping and painting BBQ tables, working in the
school library, taking an extension maths programme, helping move into a brand new admin block, reading to a blind
aged person or just having a milo and biscuit and talking to the elderly – our students were busy! The feedback from
the places visited was fantastic – Kapai kids! This programme runs for term three and then for 4 weeks of term four
when we will be organising a food drive for those in the community who need some extra help. A huge thanks to the
parents who are helping with transport – Mrs Driver, Beryl, Maree Spackman and Karyn Bosher.
BONJOUR FROM NEW CALEDONIA
Our exchange group are having a fantastic time in New Caledonia. We've spent
four nights with our sister school in the tiny village of La Foa, and we're now in
Noumea and off to do some touristy things! The weather is beautiful - 25 degrees
and lovely and sunny.
The group arrive back in New Zealand late tonight.
Mrs Breeds and Ms Eddy

YEAR 7 ACERS NETBALL TEAM
A huge thank you to Tanya Dearns – the Acer’s netball coach. The team has been very lucky to have a coach of
Tanya’s calibre and expertise.
The team had an excellent run through the grading games and the first round of the Napier division one season. The
intercity division one was definitely a challenge and the team had some close games. Tanya is the newly appointed
coach of the Central Pulse Netball Franchise so we thank her for her work at TIS and wish her well for the next
challenge!

Help !!
Volunteers required for
our school canteen!
Gill McCarthy has got things up and running
which we are all very appreciative of, but she
can’t do it every day!
We need parents to help out one day a week
from 11:30am – 1:30 pm. You will get to work
with our fabulous students who help in the
canteen and of course our wonderful staff.
Please phone the school office on 844-7264
advising the day that you are able to help with.
We encourage your child to place an order
before 8.25am, as we cannot guarantee that all
items will be available for purchase during the
lunchtime break.
Sports Uniform Plea
We still have a large number of sports uniforms which
need to be returned. Can you please check at home
under beds, in cupboards, school bags for any lurking
uniform items. Please return to a very grateful (no
questions asked) Mrs Lindsay in Room 14.
