Report Notes
•
Throughout this report “AUDIENCE REACH” has been quoted, which is the measurement of the
total unique individuals to have watched the event on television in-home. This ensures viewers are
not duplicated while providing a true measure of event penetration.
For the purposes of this report, audience reach has been based on viewers watching a minimum of
20 consecutive minutes of coverage; however various other reach conditions have also been
sourced and are quoted throughout as well as shown in the “Appendix” section. The projected
global reach is based on collecting the audited reach data in major measured markets around the
world, which account for a wide geographic spread as well as a significant proportion of the world’s
population.
•
This report examines only Television audiences. FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015 was
available to audiences via other media forms, such as broadband and mobile however, this
report does not detail consumption figures for these other forms of media as the data cannot
as yet be aggregated.
•
Many markets around the world have developed accurate methodologies to measure “IN-HOME
AUDIENCES” over recent years; therefore there is a higher level of available audited audiences in
this report than in the previous event report.
•
Where estimated audiences have been applied, a more rigorous methodology has been employed
than previously, taking into account multiple variables (see “In-home data sources and
methodology” section on page 10).
Audience estimates are used due to the fact that official audited audience measurement systems
still do not exist in many markets around the world. For example, estimates continue to be
necessary in much of Africa, the Middle East, Caribbean, Pacific Islands and smaller markets in the
Asia sub-continent. In addition, many digital/subscription channels around the world either do not
or are not able to measure their audiences.
Audited audience data is available in over 85 territories, which, although only representing around
40% of the territories where coverage was available, account for approximately 75% of the world
population.

Executive summary
The in-home television coverage of the FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015 reached 181.3 million
people globally, based on viewers watching a minimum of three (3) consecutive minutes of coverage.
Based on viewers watching a minimum of 20 consecutive minutes of coverage, the FIFA U-20 World Cup
New Zealand 2015 reached 100.1 million viewers.
To establish the audience reach for the FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015, FIFA sourced audience
reach from 10 key markets within this report.
Globally there was a 21% decline in TV audience reach2 when comparing FIFA U-20 World Cup New
Zealand 2015 with the previous edition, FIFA U-20 World Cup Turkey 2013. The regions to most negatively
impact the global total were Europe, South America and Asia where respective decreases of 15.7 million,
11.5 million and 9.5 million were registered. The main reasons for these decreases were timezone/location
of the 2 events, the success/participation of local teams and, in some markets, the broadcasting channel
penetration. When looking at the total reach2 figures for these regions, it is clear to see that the heaviest
decreasing regions, between 2011 and 2013, outweigh the gains made between the two events in North,
Central America & Caribbean. The key impacting reach2 figures from each event are detailed in the table
below (based on viewers watching a minimum of 20 consecutive minutes):
Region
2013
2015
Gain/Loss
North, Central America and Caribbean
16,330,400
29,137,734
12,807,334
Europe
21,542,654
5,821,393
-15,721,261
South America
48,323,521
36,830,848
-11,492,673
Asia
25,910,368
19,521,433
-6,388,935
The 2013 host region of Europe experienced the largest decline year on year; there were drops in audience
reach2 in a number of key markets. Largely due to the timezone in Europe, with matches taking place
through the night and early morning, there was only pan regional coverage on Eurosport in key markets
like France, Russia and Spain in 2015 (there was additional local broadcaster coverage in 2013 when the
event was in Europe) and these markets respectively saw audience reach2 drops of 3.1 million, 1.1 million
and 8.4 million. Further examples of timezone impact were demonstrated by audience reach2 declines of
2.2 million and 2.0 million respectively in Portugal (also Portugal competed in 2013 but not in 2015) and on
Eurosport across the region.
In South America there was a gain for Brazil due to their team competing in 2015 (not in 2013) and due to
coverage being aired by TV Globo in 2015 (not in 2013). The result was a rise in TV audience reach2 from
11.9 million people to 18.8 million people (+6.9 million). However, this was not enough to generate a
regional increase as other markets, in particular Chile and Colombia, experienced declines. A drop of 10.2
million was seen in Chile; this was mainly due to the event timezone generating lower levels of interest on
TV in the region. The result was only short, late night HLs being aired on high penetration free-to-air TV in
2015, compared to 28 live match broadcasts on free-to-air TV in 2013. The event timezone effect can also
be attributed to viewing figures in Colombia in 2015 where a drop of 4.9 million viewers was experienced.
8
The story in Asia was similar to South America. There was a rise in TV audience reach2 within China when
comparing FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015 with the previous edition, FIFA U-20 World Cup Turkey
2013. TV audience reach2 rose by 9.9 million, from 2.6 million to 12.5 million, due to more free-to-air
matches being shown in 2015. Furthermore, the matches in 2015 aired during the daytime and drew higher
average audiences than those that were aired late at night during the 2013 event. The gains in China were
not enough to generate a regional increase as there were decreases elsewhere across the region. A TV
audience reach2 drop of 7.7 million was experienced in Korea Republic; the team did not compete in 2015
whilst they reached2 the Quarter Finals in 2013 which in turn generated lower interest and less live TV
coverage; there were no free-to-air live matches in Korea Republic in 2015 vs. 12 free-to-air live matches in
2013.
There were audience reach2 gains in North, Central America & Caribbean, in particular in Mexico (+5.6
million) and USA (+4.2 million), however, as shown above, these did not amount to the drops experienced
across other parts of the world.
Other highlights of the FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015 included:
o
Each live match was watched by an average in-home global audience of 2.0 million people.
o

was achieved. The Brazil v Serbia Final attracted a live average audience of over 5.7 million viewers
on TV Globo4.
o
Reach2 was also highest in Brazil, where 18.8 million viewers were reached2.
o
Elsewhere, more than fifteen million viewers were reached2 in Colombia (15.3m), over twelve
million in China (12.5m) and more than seven million in both Mexico (9.9m) and USA (7.3m).
o
A total of 5,108 hours of FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015 “DEDICATED COVERAGE” were
broadcast in-home globally.
o
The highest ratings (“TVR%”) were produced by channels in El Salvador, Serbia, Panama &
Portugal. The highest TVR% during the FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015 was achieved on
Canal 4 in El Salvador for the Brazil v Serbia Final (35.0%). Serbia’s highest TVR% during the FIFA
U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015 was a rating of 19.6% for highlights coverage of the Final on
RTS16.
o
The highest “MARKET SHARE” during the FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015 was achieved
in Serbia, where highlights coverage of the Brazil v Serbia Final (aired during the morning after the
live match) gained 68.4% of all television viewers during the timeslot. In addition, market shares of
more than 30% were achieved in Brazil, Portugal, South Africa, Uruguay and Colombia.

In-home data sources and methodology
The majority of schedules and programming were sourced from the official television auditing agencies in
markets, or in some cases directly from the FIFA “MEDIA RIGHTS LICENSEES (MRLs)”. In addition, the
current household penetration figures were confirmed via the same source for the majority of MRLs, or if
this was not forthcoming, from either published data or via the Kantar Media and WPP network of offices.
Furthermore, audience data, where available, has been gathered for each programme directly from MRLs.
However, in some cases this has also been ordered from official television auditing agencies in the market.
It is worth noting that several territories have audience measurement panels which do not cover the entire
territory. In such cases, the audiences are upweighted using the officially measured data in conjunction
with population and television penetration information to account for the entire territory.
Where markets are able to split live coverage into pre-match, match and post-match and such coverage is
of reasonable duration (more than three minutes), this has been displayed and analysed as separate
highlights programming.
Where markets remain unrated, a methodology to “ESTIMATE AUDIENCES” was employed in each of the
individual markets. This methodology is based on using the available data for licensees in the
corresponding region as well as analysis based on a combination of the following variables:
o Household penetration of channel
o Day part (early morning, morning, lunchtime, afternoon, prime time, late evening or late night)
o Type of coverage (live, delayed, repeat, highlights / magazine)
o Match (live games only)
o Stage of competition (group match / round of 16 / quarter-finals / semi-finals / final; all non-live
programming)
o Analysis of individual market (i.e. whether the market has a team competing in the tournament,
whether the market has a team competing in the fixture, the level of interest in football within a
market, etc.)
o Comparative audiences in the region

Glossary of terms
Audience reach: the net number of unique individuals that watched an event for a minimum of a stated
number of consecutive minutes. For the purposes of this report, 20 consecutive minutes has been used, as
a recognised industry standard for engagement with football, however three minute reach has also been
quoted throughout.
Average audience: in audited markets, an audience is measured each minute throughout the day. The
average audience is the sum of each audience for each minute during a broadcast, divided by the duration
of coverage in minutes.
Channel(s): the television station which the Media Rights Licensee used to show the event in-home.
Dedicated coverage: the television time the event is aired for, based on specific devoted event coverage
including live games, repeats, event highlights and magazine shows. Dedicated coverage therefore
excludes clips shown in news bulletins and in non-dedicated magazine coverage such as FIFA Futbol
Mundial or World Sport.
Estimated audience: as many markets remain unaudited around the globe, estimated audiences are
employed to predict the audience for coverage. For this event, the methodology outlined in the “In-home
data sources and methodology” section was used.
In-home viewing: the audience measurement based on all viewers from within the home, including
guests.
Market Share %: the audience expressed as a percentage of the total viewing audience watching
television during a particular time period
Media Rights Licensee (MRL): an organisation which has been granted certain media rights to the FIFA U20 World Cup New Zealand 2015 in relation to the live and continuous transmission of the international TV
signal of each match in a particular territory or territories.
Peak average audience: the highest average audience of any single programme from all broadcasts.
Peak match audience: the highest match audience, where all programmes for a match are considered (i.e.
all live, delayed and repeat programmes).
TVR%: the audience expressed as a share of the total possible television viewers in a particular market.
Unique Visitors: the number of different people who access the video content. It is based upon one or
more of the following types of information garnered from visitors: their IP address, their member name (if
the particular site uses membership or if the visitor is part of a commercial service’s panel), or their
“cookies” (personal identification information).
