Measurements and Metrics Notes Unit 1
• Standard Unit:
Units everyone agrees upon
Ex: 12 inches = 1 foot
1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds
• Can you think of a reason why standard units are important?
Standard units allow for consistent measurement between
different groups of people.
The METRIC SYSTEM is a great system of standard units.
• The metric system is based on changes or multiple of 10.
• (This means you simply have to move the decimal point in
order to convert between units.)

Steps for converting from one metric unit to another:
1. Locate the decimal in the number.
2. Find the prefix you are starting in.
3. Find the new prefix you want to convert to.
4. Count the number of moves it takes to get there, and
the direction you moved in.
5. Move the decimal point in the same direction and the
same number of moves.

Derived Units:
→ Units made up of more than one standard unit.
Examples:
1. AREA ( length x width) = cm x cm = cm2
2. VOLUME (length x width x height) = cm x cm x cm = cm3
3. DENSITY = mass/volume = (grams/milliliter) = g/mL
4.
