FIRST CONGREGATIONAL 76 South Wisconsin Street Elkhorn, Wisconsin 53121 Office Hours: Mon. Tue. Fri. 9:00 am - 1:00 pm Wed. 11:00 am - 2:00 pm Thurs.-Closed E-mail:[email protected] Pastor: Rev. Dr. Scott McLeod web: ElkhornUCC.org Phone: 262-723-3246 Sabbatical Renewal Begins On May 7th, after worship, my sabbatical renewal time begins. I will be returning to my normal pastoral duties at the church on Sunday, August 6th. The Rev. Becky Boggs will be filling in at the church on a part-time basis while I’m away. Pastor Becky will be preparing and leading Sunday morning worship, covering pastoral needs for church members, have some limited office hours and will be available for some committee meetings, if requested. Becky lives in Williams Bay with her husband Mike and has two sons, Deacon and Jack. She is a graduate of Chicago Theological Seminary and was ordained in 2015 at the Delavan United Church of Christ- Congregational. She worked alongside my wife, Laura while they were colleagues at the Delavan church, and I believe you will enjoy and appreciate her ministry with you this summer. Those of you who are able to be in worship on May 7th will be able to witness the sense of humor we both enjoy. Thanks to the Pastor– Parish Relations Committee for securing her pastoral services for this renewal time. There are several highlights of this renewal time for me. During the first week away, my daughter, Ruth will be graduating from Beloit College and the Elkhorn McLeods will be entertaining family from the East Coast. Then I will be off on a ten day trip to Germany staying in Goerlitz, Berlin and, of course, Wittenburg—the site where the Reformation got started 500 years ago. Later in July I will be traveling out to CT to see family and get Ruth settled into the next chapter of her life: a Doctoral program at the University of Connecticut. Otherwise, I will be taking time to do some work around our house and spend some time bike riding in the Kettle Moraine. I also have about a dozen books on theology, church history and spirituality that I plan to read; plus, I will be writing and reflecting on all of these activities in a prayer journal. You also have some renewal time opportunities this summer as a congregation. One of the best is the “Understanding Spiritual Gifts” small groups that will be forming quickly and getting started. I really encourage you to become a part of one of the small groups led by Ann Serpe, Barb Townsend, Cindy Waller and Jennifer Neis. We’re looking for a minimum of 40 participants to take part! Each person gets a workbook that will help them reflect on scripture passages and prayerfully consider their personal gifts and talents. The group meetings are both meaningful and fun as people get to know one another and think about God’s gifts to each one of us. Please read more in the article a little later in the Link. During this renewal time our Moderator, Jennifer Neis; the Chairperson of the Pastor- Parish Com- mittee, Carolyn Morris and our Office Administrator, Cindy Waller will be primary people to help coordinate any unexpected issues that come up during the summer. If there is a crisis, make sure Jennifer, Carolyn or Cindy are aware. They will all be working with Pastor Becky as well as the Congregational Care Team leaders (Jean Lile, Diane Riese, and Mary Godfrey) in order to make sure pastoral care issues are being covered too. Thank you for the opportunity to take this sabbatical renewal time. It comes at a critical time in my life and ministry and I believe that I will be a better pastor for the church after having had some renewal time. I hope to return to you with renewed energy and rekindled passion for our mutual service and ministry. What a blessing to all of us to have received an unexpected gift from the estate of Sterling Wees, and how generous of the church to put it toward Pastor Becky’s pastoral coverage so that I might step away from pastoral duties for this time. May God bless all of you in this renewal time! Courage and Peace, Pastor Scott “Understanding Spiritual Gifts” Will Strengthen Your Faith During Pastor Scott’s Sabbatical he is going to be reading, writing, exploring and resting in order to feed his spirit and nurture his soul. When he returns he’s going to be rested and ready to re-engage in ministry with all of us. But we all have some reading, writing and exploring to do on our own while he is away! This summer Jennifer Neis, Barb Townsend, Ann Serpe and Cindy Waller will each be leading a small group through a study called “Understanding Spiritual Gifts” during Scott’s Sabbatical, renewal time. “Understanding Spiritual Gifts” is a seven session small-group study that helps the participants to identify their own spiritual gifts and begin to consider how God wants each of us to use these gifts in service to the church and the community. Within the small group setting each person will be encouraged and supported as they read the Bible on their own at home responding to short scripture passages. Each person will have the chance to complete a spiritual gift inventory that will highlight three or four of the twenty spiritual gifts that God has given. And as the group gathers together, insights grow about how best to use the individual gifts with which God has blessed us . Pastor and writer, Frederick Buechner wrote, “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” What could be better that exploring the ways you might be able to nourish your own “deep gladness” and at the same time help to bring God’s power into the world in life giving ways? This is a great opportunity to strengthen your faith and learn more about yourself too! Cindy, Ann, Barb, Jennifer and Pastor Scott all had had fun learning more about each other and they all believe that everyone will enjoy the study— if only you will give it a chance! Look for an opportunity to sign -up for one of the four small groups that will be meeting; hopefully at times convenient for everyone! • • • • Group A: Thursdays at 9:00 a.m. beginning on May 25th. Group B: Mondays at 6:30 p.m. beginning on May 1st. Group C: Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m. beginning on May 10th. Group J: Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. beginning in July. Remember: Cash Offering on First Sunday of the Month The loose cash and change contributions on Communion Sundays are contributed to Our Church’s Wider Mission (OCWM). OCWM money goes to support the Wisconsin Conference ministries and staff and a percentage is passed along to the national United Church of Christ. In 2016 a total of $1,939.00 was contributed in loose offering. Of this, $389.00 was collected on the first Sunday of the 12 months. The Stewardship and Missions Committee recognizes that many members are not aware of this distribution format, and wants to make sure you know! There are always envelopes available in the pews for offering to the Church. If you or visitors would prefer that your contribution go toward a specific program or operation of our Church, please use these envelopes to indicate your giving intention. Benevolence contributions may be designated at any time. And, of course, if you simply want to help out the wider United Church of Christ, then a cash donation on the first Sunday of the month will be passed along! We sincerely thank you for your continued support of the ministry of our church here and around the world! From 11:30 to 2:00 p.m. we will be recognizing the ending of the Sunday School Year by enjoying food, games and fellowship in an outdoor activity. There will be a bouncy hut and assorted games of chance and skill for young participants. Prizes are offered and some attractive silent auction items will be available for all attending. Brats, hot dogs, chips and beverages will be offered for lunch as a replacement for the usual after worship coffee fellowship. We have extended invitations to local churches to participate in the activity. All proceeds will be contributed to Hope Now and Special Olympics. Non-perishable food items for the Food Pantry will also be collected and donations will be rewarded with free game tickets. Plan ahead and add the date May 21st to your calendar. Your continued support for all such activities of our Church is greatly appreciated. Looking forward to seeing you at FUNFEST – 2017. Save the date for a FUN NEW PROJECT June 4th Have you ever wanted to help build something that would be enjoyed by countless generations to come? Want to get outside and work among the forest trees? Care to be a steward of nature for a day? Do all this and more! Join us on Sunday, June 4 to build a reroute on a150 foot section of the Ice Age Trail. The Ice Age Trail traces the furthest advance of the most recent glaciation in Wisconsin. It is one of only 11 National Scenic Trails and is about 1200 miles long. Beginning in St. Croix Falls at the Minnesota border, the trail heads east, then curves south to Janesville, and then heads east into Walworth County. From here, it turns northeast to Door County and ends in Sturgeon Bay. The Stewardship and Missions Committee has planned a workday in conjunction with the local chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance. We will build a new section of trail to replace a severely eroded portion off of Duffin Road in the town of LaGrange. Our work will consist of removing brush along the new route and preparing a new pathway that will be less susceptible to erosion. We will be working alongside members of the Ice Age Trail Alliance, who will teach us the skills of safely constructing a durable trail. Tools will be provided, but if you have a loppers, a spade, a shovel, or a five gallon bucket, feel free to bring it along. Perhaps we’ll begin our adventure with lunch at the nearby historic Oleson Cabin. Final details are being fine-tuned and will be announced when available. Christian Education News: Last month was a busy one for Sunday School! The song performed with choir on Palm Sunday was beautiful and delighted many attending that day. Then students decorated about 11 dozen eggs for Easter— thanks to those who purchased the eggs. Proceeds from this sale help to fund our curriculum and are greatly appreciated! An egg hunt was enjoyed the following week. The final project of the month involved the decorating and planting of pots for distribution at the May 13th Elkhorn Chamber-sponsored Open House. Those visiting our church that day will have the option of taking home a potted flower. Thanks to Jamie Stilling-Stepp for her donation and coordination of this activity! May 21st marks our final day of Sunday School for the school year but it will be a fantastically fun day with the celebration of Fun Fest following services! Please join us for great food and family fun. Spread the word and invite neighbors and friends, all to help support area charities! Watch for news about upcoming Faith, Fun, and Families events scheduled throughout the summer months. We have some great outings in the works—stay tuned for details! Barbara Townsend Board of Christian Education Andy’s Breakfast: Help Us Feed the Hungry Here In Elkhorn Andy's Breakfast began in the summer of 2015 in Delavan. The Delavan United Church of Christ had just studied the WI Council of Church’s “Hunger On Our Doorstep” guide. Compelled by that information and prayerful reflection, a group led by Leroy Heimbach decided to address the issue of hunger and food insecurity in Delavan during the summer months when school programs like the "free and reduced lunch program" are no longer helping to make sure children received food. They came up with the idea of helping to provide breakfast to children and families in different neighborhoods around town. They served meals that summer to hundreds of children. In 2016 the program grew to include Elkhorn as our church and several others served meals at the Elkhorn Youth Center. This summer the Delavan churches will be offering breakfast at 5 different sites around Delavan-Darien and we are going to help coordinate 2 different sites in Elkhorn. Breakfast consists of pre-packaged food items like milk, breakfast cereal, yogurt, cheese, and granola/ protein bars. Each weekday from June 12, 2017 until August 25, 2017 a couple of volunteers from "Andy's Breakfast" would arrive at one of the two apartment complexes around 7:00 a.m. with the food items and serve breakfast until 9:00 a.m. They would have the breakfast items available for about two hours and give them to anyone who wanted them; children, adults or seniors. All of the different churches that would be helping to provide volunteers will also be providing the funds to purchase the food items. Here in Elkhorn, the participating churches are: St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Sugar Creek Lutheran Church, First United Methodist Church, First Congregational United Church of Christ and Bethel United Methodist Church. We will have a rotation in which we ask each church to provide 4 volunteers each morning (2 for each site) for their scheduled week– every 5 weeks. During the summer our “Hungry Hippo” donation jar, available during Coffee Fellowship, will be dedicated toward helping to fund Andy’s Breakfast. Ann Serpe has graciously offered to help organize the Breakfast program this summer. The food will be stored here at our church and groups will be coming here each morning to pick up the food necessary for each of the Breakfast sties. Hunger and food insecurity are real problems for families that are struggling to pay the bills. We hope in our own small way to make sure that families in our community will not go hungry. We hope that we can provide food for the folks who live around the Elkhorn Commons Apartments and the other site (not officially selected yet!). Please look for a sign-up sheet on the clip-board passed during worship for an opportunity to help us in this important ministry. Thank you! May Book Club: A Horseman’s Chronicle For April, Wild Horse Country in Wyoming, by a man who grew up in South Central Wyoming named Jack Price, was chosen. A relative of the author has been invited to our meeting to share some additional stories with us. The book itself takes place primarily during the 1930’s. The author, his father, and brothers were engaged in ranching, but the primary focus of the book is upon the chasing and capturing of various wild horses which roamed that part of the state. He refers often to the “Red Desert” and that can be located right near where highway 80 crosses about half-way between the state’s eastern and western borders. The majority of the book chronicles various chases in which the author, his family, and others engaged. He singles out individual horses which were captured, recounts their qualities, and often includes photos of the horse, and the man who took a liking to him or her. Many of the wild horses were traded or sold, as this was their “business.” To tell the truth the horse chases become a bit repetitive. The primary pattern of stationing riders at strategic locations along which the drive was to occur is repeated with minor variations. Essentially, it appears Mr. Price kept some kind of diary or journal; it is impossible to believe that he simply wrote the book years later from memory alone. It reads like the journal, he apparently kept, was transcribed almost word for word into the various chapters of the book. Because of this, the book lacks any real writing style. It adopts the “here’s what happened” style, and moves from incident to incident, or roundup to roundup with little real transition. The events recounted don’t seem to be covered in any real order. It is unclear when some happened in relation to others. For the type of book Price chose to write, it isn’t a huge problem, but since there is little transition from one incident to another a narrative form is lost. Here is one example :In the chapter entitled “Baldy Baker “ (In this case the name of a cowboy, not a horse) Price recounts some events from the year 1939. Included in this was a trip he was allowed to take up to Yellowstone Park. He has a brief description of the park focusing primarily on Old Faithful; then the group head back south. Then the chapter ends, literally, with this sentence, “ This was also the year Mama died, which was a great loss to the family.” The next chapter is titled “Blue Dog”. It is about a horse by that name which the one of the cowboys “broke”. About 40 pages on we come to a chapter named “Home Made Hand Me Down Chaps”. Here is how the fourth paragraph begins, “Don and Short got to go along with Dad on that trip, Chuck stayed behind to help mama with the chores.” Is a narrative form absolutely necessary for a non-fiction book to be interesting? I would agree that it is not necessary in all cases. I guess in the case of this book I missed that element. Merry Kay Opitz will host book club at her place (rebuilt now) in Fontana. It will be on Thursday, May 4, at 6:30. Bye for now. Bill Neis Women’s Fellowship News At the April Women's Fellowship meeting the plans for the Salad Luncheon on May 3rd were discussed and finalized. Of course anyone can still sign up to help. Help is always welcome. We also discussed the scholarships we will be giving and possible presenters. We will be ordering more Terry Lynn Nuts. We will have a variety of nuts available for sale in time for Mother's Day and Father's Day. So think NUTS!
