A “Fit for Mission” retreat day – The Spirituality of Joy
Does Christian joy, which flows from believing in the good news, mean that I am supposed to
be happy all the time? Unlike happiness, joy is not simply a fleeting feeling or short-lived
emotion; it is a permanent result of one’s connection to God.
A day to explore the meaning and experience of joy in our lives.

It
is
now
de
rigueur,
when
visiting
Matamata,
to take in a visit

to Hobbiton. Tolkien's description of the Shire, now
embodied in the middle of the Waikato, appeals, because of
its homeliness; the smell of freshly baked bread, fresh
coffee, a warm fire and hearth. The problem Bilbo Baggins
finds, is that such familiarity has a shadow side. Once the
spark of adventure is ignited within his heart, he discovers
that he is ostracised to a certain extent. That is an
archetypical theme and experience of the hero. Their
experience can be summed up in the saying: "If you see a
head, hit it."
We see in today's gospel Jesus experiencing that very
human reality. Raised in a village, no doubt homely and
ordinary and of no great consequence, he finds his fellow
villagers disregarding him, because he is starting to raise his
head above the crowd.
Today's story is an affirmation of the humanity of Christ.
Theologically we find it expressed in our creed - "et
incarnatus est" - and the Word became flesh, or as St John
so descriptively said - "He pitched his tent among us." The
writer of the letter to the Hebrews underscores this: " a man,
like us in all things, but sin," " He was tempted in every way
that we are and without sin." These are awesome realities,
that are totally astonishing. God sharing our humanity - how
do you pour the ocean into a coke-bottle? This issue was
fought out, sometimes violently, in the early centuries of the
Church - some contesting that Jesus was God only
pretending to be man, and others that he was only a man
pretending to be God.
Our Catholic faith affirms his Divine personhood sharing
completely two natures both Divine and Human.
From this we discover our destiny, to share in His Divinity,
through His Humanity. We discover our dignity, as "in
Christ," being sons and daughters of God, our Father. We
discover our adventure, to invest in others, to invite them into
this Truth.
To be a Catholic is, like Christ, to lift one's head above the
PC crowd, and to be sure, it will indeed be hit!
