Region 10 Champions
Lower Moreland High School placed
#9 in Pennsylvania (#533 in the
nation) and was a silver medalist in
the 2016 U.S. News & World Report
ranking of the top high schools in the nation.
The U.S. News rankings include data on more than
21,000 public high schools in 50 states and the District
of Columbia. The 2016 Best High Schools rankings
awards the top 6,517 public high schools with gold,
silver and bronze medals, indicating their level of
college readiness.
The publication looked at the following criteria:
• Overall student performance on staterequired tests;
• How effectively schools educated their
disadvantaged students;
• High school graduation rates (new this
year); and
• How well they prepared students for college
based on participation in and performance
on AP and IB exams.
The Lower Moreland Mock Trial Team is the Region 10
Champions. They advanced to the state tournament in
Harrisburg on April 1 and 2 where they competed as
one of the top 12 teams in the state. The team ended up
taking 5th place in the state.

Women in
Computer Science Day
Dr. Andrew V. Nguyen
shared his research on
transgenic mice with
the Gifted Program and
AP biology students
on April 11th. His research team has discovered that
macrophages, cells of the immune system that normally
help us to fight off disease, can actually stimulate the
production of blood vessels in breast cancer tumors. This
important finding may lead to improved breast cancer
therapies through the suppression of tumor-associated
macrophages in the breast. Dr. Nguyen is currently using
his transgenic mice to study inflammatory diseases of the
intestine, including IBD and Crohn’s.
The Women in Computer Science Day was held
in April. The LMHS students were given tours of
the different engineering labs at the University of
Pennsylvania. They were also able to sit in on a class
and ask questions to a panel of current women in the
engineering and computer science departments.

Guest Speaker
On April 27th, Dr. James Chan from the University
of Pennsylvania came to Mr. Solomon’s American
Studies classroom to discuss Chinese and United
States relations currently and during the Cold War.
His lecture also involved his experiences in coming
to America from Hong Kong and quitting his job at
a Fortune 500 to start his own business. Dr. Chan
is the CEO of Asia Marketing Management and
splits his time between lecturing at the University of
Pennsylvania and representing American clients who
wish to expand their business to China. He is also
author of the book “Spare Room Tycoon”.

Schools, said. “The STEM field is such an important part
of the future, and we actively encourage our teachers
and students to find fun ways to use STEM inside and
outside of the classroom. This is a great honor not only
for these students, but also for our schools.”
Students from 41 states took the initial exam to qualify
for MathCON, which was held at the University of
Illinois at Chicago on April 23rd. The day-long event
brings together elementary middle and high school
students to compete for various prizes such as mini
IPads, gift cards, and national prestige through various
math questions and activities.
“MathCON is our way of inspiring the future leaders in
science, technology, math and engineering by engaging
students at a young age, making STEM fun and
demonstrating its real-world applications,” said Ayhan
Caputlu of Concept Schools, which organizes the event.

Math Challenge
Moody’s Mega
is a mathematical modeling contest for
high school juniors and seniors. Through
participation, students gain the experience of
working in teams to tackle a real-world problem under
time and resource constraints akin to those faced by
industrial applied mathematicians. The Challenge is
sponsored by The Moody’s Foundation and organized
by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics
(SIAM) and awards $150,000 in scholarships. The
M3 Challenge spotlights applied mathematics as a
powerful problem-solving tool, and as a viable
and exciting profession.
The juniors listed below received Honorable Mention
for their solution paper for Moody’s Mega Math
Challenge which took place on February 28th. This year’s

fosters an interest in horticulture and the natural
environment and encourages active participation in
growing, gardening, and sustainable practices.
The children have the opportunity to compete in a
variety of projects appropriate for their age, including
crafts with natural materials, container-grown plants,
terrariums, photography, and artistic creations. Each

Students’ Artwork on Display
Sixth grade students
recently
finished a portrait project to reinforce concepts
covered in their
Language Arts
classes and to
compliment the
novel they read,
“Fever 1793.” Murray Avenue Language Arts teachers,
Sue Barnhart and Emily Loeffler, shared their enthusiasm for this new 6th grade novel with Murray Avenue
Art teacher, Jayna Jolly. The fact that the book’s heroine
owns a coffee shop that displays artwork was of particular interest. The artwork was created by a charac-
ter who had an apprenticeship with the Peale family, a
prolific Philadelphia-based family of artists who have a
long and lasting legacy. Charles Wilson Peale was the
founder of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts
and best known for his portraits, specifically of historical figures such as George Washington and Thomas
Jefferson.
As a follow-up and closure to the project, the following
6th grade students were chosen to have their portraits
displayed at the Be Well Bakery from April 8th to April
29th. On April 8th, an opening reception was held at the
bakery and, as an added bonus, Lower Moreland High
School Music teacher, Dr. Sarah Gulish, and some
of her high school students performed as a musical
ensemble.

Boys Swim Team:
Impressive End of Season
The Lower Moreland boys swim team finished their
season at states at Bucknell in March. The team
finished seventh overall out of 57 participating schools!
The state meet is a two-day event, with swimmers
participating in preliminaries in the morning. The top
sixteen finishers at preliminaries make finals, and out
of those swimmers, the top eight at preliminaries swim
in the final heat and medal at states.
The 200 Medley relay, consisting of Connor Killion,
Chris Kelly, Tommy Lutter, and Tom Seefried, placed
9th with a time of 1:39.16, a record time for LM. (Had
the boys made it into the final heat during prelims,
their time would have placed them in fifth compared
to the times in the final heat!) Connor Killion placed
second in the 200 freestyle in the state with a time
of 1:41.20. Tom Seefried made it to finals and placed
eleventh in the state with a time of 22.09. The 200 free
relay, consisting of Chris Kelly, Connor Pietro, Tom
Seefried, and Connor Killion, placed sixth in the state
with a time of 1:29.47. Finally, Connor Killion placed
third in the 500 freestyle, with a time of 4:37.82.
In addition, Chris Kelly placed 18th at prelims in the
200 IM with a time of 2:03.45, missing finals by two
spots. Tommy Lutter placed 28th in the state with a time

The Memory Project
Seventh grade art students at Murray Avenue were
recently participants of The Memory Project. This project
connects art teachers with underprivileged children
around the world who have been victims of substantial
challenges such as neglect, abuse, extreme poverty and/or
loss of parents. Teachers are asked to have their students
create portraits of the children, to help them feel valued
and important - to know that other people care about
their well-being.
Our 7th graders completed their amazing portraits
and they were be mailed to the administrators of this
organization, where they will then be hand-delivered to
children in Peru. The best part, is that a video was taken
of the children receiving their portraits and mailed back
to us to complete this circle of giving.
