7th Grade Math Newsletter Chapter 6 Percents Today’s Headlines: Ch 6 Summary Have you ever noticed how often we use percents in our everyday lives? They are all around us so it is important for kids to learn how to work with them. Math Access Online In section 6-1 the students reviewed how to change among three forms of numbers: fractions, decimals and percents. Some are very common and they know them from memory, such as 25% = 0.25 = ¼. Others need 16 more thought and work such as 16% = 0.16 = 100 = 4 25 . Think of any fraction, decimal or percent and your child should be able to tell you the other forms. When you tip at a restaurant, do you leave exactly 15% or do you estimate? Most of us estimate for many real life situations. Section 6-2 was all about estimating percents. We talked about using compatible numbers to be able to estimate in our heads. We also talked about the quickest way to find 10% of a value. See if your child can explain the 10% shortcut method. They found that they could either translate the problems into equations or proportions to solve them. Section 6-7 dealt with simple interest. The kids always have lots of banking questions when we talk about interest! Some I can answer and some I can’t. After learning the simple interest formula, I = Prt, the kids can calculate the interest they will earn on their savings accounts or the interest they would have to pay on a loan.
