TERRAZZO TILES
HB-Betoniteollisuus Oy
Finnish HB-MOSTONE tiles change
traditional ways of thinking about terrazzo tiles and their functional applications. A completely new kind of
monolithic manufacturing technology means that HB-MOSTONE tiles
can be made thinner than conventional terrazzo tiles.
The high strength of HB-MOSTONE
tiles, as well as the density of their virtually impervious surface, enables the
tiles' users to implement durable, vibrantly coloured and easily maintained terrazzo floors that keep their
shine at every location.

APPLICATIONS
HB-MOSTONE tiles are ideal for use in
interior floors and staircases, particularly
in applications - such as shops, supermarkets, offices, public premises, halls
and stairwells - that require durability,
easy maintenance and a striking appearance. The new thin tiles facilitate easy installation with mortar in renovation projects, at intermediate floors or in other
spaces subject to special weight or structural criteria.

MANUFACTURE AND
STRUCTURE
HB-MOSTONE terrazzo tiles are manufactured with automatic machinery using
an advanced single layer method, pressing hydraulically into a mould. Tiles are
grey or white cement bounded single
wear-layer products that can also be
dyed to achieve the desired colour. The
aggregate chips used are 0 - 12 mm in diameter, depending on tile thickness and
design. After pressing, the tiles are cured
in steam kilns. The backs of hardened
tiles are ground to improve grip and an
automatic polishing line is used to
achieve the required level of polish on the
surface of the tiles. Basic protective coating agents can also be made at the factory. Tile surface options are polished,
matt or shot blasted. Tiles sized 297 x
297 mm are packed in smaller "brick pallets" to facilitate their handling on the
construction site.
DESIGNS
This brochure presents 24 colour options
from our selection. There are many more
colour alternatives available and we can
also tailor tiles to order. The appearance
of terrazzo tiles can be altered by varying
the type, size or quantity of chips and by
using colour pigments. The tile thickness
may limit the maximum chip size. Additional colour designs are shown in the
HB-Staircases brochure G24-36489 and
HB-GRAMOS brochure S-36490.

INSTALLATION
General
HB-MOSTONE tiles can be installed using dry mix or mortar, depending on the
tile thickness. When using tiles sized 297
x 297mm or 597 x 597 mm, the tiles can
be laid with an approximately 3 mm joint
width in a 3M-module spacing. We can
also carry out the entire tiling process including installation.
Dry mix installation
Tiles 25 mm in thickness are installed using dry mix concrete. The minimum temperature of the installation site and tiles is
+5 °C. The surface of the concrete base
must be rough (e.g. brushed surface) and
must not contain thick layers of cement
paste. The installation tolerance is 65
±10 mm from the surface of the concrete
base to the finished surface. The bedding
mixture is dry mix concrete with a maximum grain size of 8 mm and minimum
3
cement content of 350 kg/m . Water is
added to the mixture as necessary. The
longest permitted use time of the bedding mixture is 3 hours.

Installation with mortar
Tiles with a thickness of 16 - 19 mm
should be installed with mortar. The minimum temperature of the installation site
and tiles is +10 °C.
The concrete base must be an even steel
trowelled concrete surface (by 45 / BLY 7
table 1.2, classification A0). Excess cement paste is removed and the surface is
vacuumed free of dust prior to installation. The use of a primer is recommended to ensure adhesion.

Grouting and floor protection
It is recommended that grouting be carried out 3 - 4 days after laying at the earliest.
Areas that have not been grouted should not be walked upon. The grout is normally a
slack mixture of cement and fine sand.
The completed tiling is treated once with a basic treatment agent for the duration of the
construction work unless pre-treated HB-MOSTONE tiles are used. The tiling must
also be covered with a suitable protective material during construction work (e.g. milk
container cardboard). The protective covering must be fast-dyed. Materials such as
corrugated cardboard or hardboard must not be used.
FLOOR MAINTENANCE
Regular cleaning and appropriate protective treatment ensures that the terrazzo floor material will maintain its excellent qualities
and desired appearance. Prior to use, the floor should be cleaned thoroughly and treated at least once. In the future, basic floor
maintenance should be carried out when necessary 2 - 4 times a year.
