Solutions
- Solutions can be solid, liquid or gas.
- Solutions
- In a solution, one substance has mixed
completely, or dissolved, into another.
- The substances that dissolve are called the
solutes.
- The substances into which they dissolve is
called called the solvent.
Liquid solutions are formed when a solid, a
liquid or a gas dissolve in a liquid.
-Example : Apple juice is a solution of sugar and
minerals (the solutes) dissolved in water (the
solvent).
Solid solutions are formed when a solid, a liquid
or a gas dissolve in a solid.
For example - Steel is a solid solution made
when oxygen (a gas) and carbon (a solid)
dissolve into iron (a solid)
Solutes - oxygen and carbon / Solvent - iron
How Do Solutions Form?
When a solute dissolves into the solvent, the attraction
between the solute's particles and the attraction between
the solute and solvent's particles, become at least equally
strong.
For example - When kool-aid dissolves in water, the drink
crystals particles are as attracted to the water particles as
they are attracted to each other. Therefore, the crystal
particles slowly break away from the other crystal particles.
This process continues until the Kool-aid is completed
dissolved into the water.
When the tiny particles of a solute are
dissolved, or mixed completely, with the
particles of a solvent such as water, the solute
particles fit in the spaces between the solvent
particles.
