Motorists will now pay R12.35 a litre for unleaded petrol inland and R11.87 on the coast. The decrease is mainly due to the strengthening of the rand (the average rand/dollar exchange rate for the period 1 July 2016 to 28 July 2016 was 14.44 compared to 15.16 during the previous period) and the weaker oil price. The official unemployment rate in the second quarter of 2016 declined slightly with 0.1 of a percentage point to 26.6%, Statistics South Africa announced. Despite the slight decrease in unemployment, total employment contracted by 0.8% due to the largest decreases recorded in Community & social services (127 000), Agriculture (44 000) and Transport (39 000) industries.
