Both Domestic and international grain prices performed badly
this week compared to the previous week. Domestic white maize
and yellow maize average price per ton decreased by 3.6% and
2.5% respectively on Friday. Due to sharp losses on seasonal
harvest pressure and slightly firmer rand. Other domestic grain
commodities wheat, soybeans, sunflower and sorghum average
prices decline during the reporting week by 1.4% (closing at R 4
510.00/ton), 6.9% ( closing at R7 017.20/ton), 4.8% (closing at
R5 833.80/ton) and 2.1% (closing at R3 200/ton) respectively.

price decreased by 2.7%, 0.3% and 5.2% respectively. Due to
improved weather conditions across the maize belt, weighing
heavily on prices as ratings were also above seasonal averages.

The Oil price as depicted on the graph declined last week after the worries of an expected glut in
supply after the US showed an unexpected stockpiles of oil and gasoline. Additionally; news that
the US economy grew slower than expected in April-June also raised questions about demand in
the world's biggest oil consumer. The weak fundamentals caused a depreciation of the US dollar
making oil cheaper for others other currencies. The local oil price decreased by 18% this week
compared to last year and 2.3% lower than it was last week.

Latest News Developments
The pump price for a litre of petrol will be 99c a litre cheaper for all grades from next Wednesday, while the price of diesel 0.05% sulphur and
diesel 0.005% sulphur will decrease by 74c and 73c a litre respectively. Motorists will now pay R12.35 a litre for unleaded petrol inland and
R11.87 on the coast. The decrease is mainly due to the strengthening of the rand (the average rand/dollar exchange rate for the period 1 July
2016 to 28 July 2016 was 14.44 compared to 15.16 during the previous period) and the weaker oil price.
The official unemployment rate in the second quarter of 2016 declined slightly with 0.1 of a percentage point to 26.6%, Statistics South Africa
announced. Despite the slight decrease in unemployment, total employment contracted by 0.8% due to the largest decreases recorded in
Community & social services (127 000), Agriculture (44 000) and Transport (39 000) industries.
