Tuesday, May 29, 2012 Save the Date: Magellan to Host Community Sharing Sessions In June, Magellan Health Services of Arizona will host a series of community sharing sessions to gather input and feedback from service recipients, family members and caregivers, advocates, and community members around shaping the continued evolution of central Arizona's behavioral health system of care. In 2010, 31.3 million adults (13.7 percent of the population 18 years or older) received mental health services during the past 12 months (NSDUH, 2010). Featured Upcoming Trainings in June: "safeTalk" presented by Heather Brown, prevention coordinator for Magellan Health Services of Arizona, on Monday, June 4, from 1 to 4 p.m. safeTALK teaches participants to recognize and engage persons who might be having thoughts of suicide and to connect them with community resources trained in suicide intervention. safeTALK stresses safety while challenging taboos that inhibit open talk about suicide. The safeTALK learning process is highly structured, providing graduated exposure to practice actions. The program is designed to help participants monitor the effect of false societal beliefs that can cause otherwise caring and helpful people to miss, dismiss, or avoid suicide alerts and to practice the TALK step actions to move past these three barriers. Six 60-90 second video scenarios, each with non-alert and alert clips, are selected from a library of scenarios and strategically used through the training to provide experiential referents for the participants. "Psychiatric Service Dogs" presented by Denise Wetzler, M.Ed., on Tuesday, June 5, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. This course will provide introductory information about Psychiatric Service Dogs (PSD). It will cover state and federal laws pertaining to PSD, work and tasks of PSD, documentation, training process, financial aspects, information for prescribers, and anecdotes from the presenter. Denise has been partnered with a PSD for three years. Participants will have the chance to meet a real PSD and see them in action. Sign up for these free classes today online at https://magellan.learn.com/az. The training will take place at Magellan's Learning Center located at 4801 E. Washington St., in Phoenix.
