The head of the BC Cattlemen's Association is calling a new report by the province's ranching task force "a starting
point" in addressing the industry's concerns.
Association president Roland Baumann made the remarks as the government received the final report, which
identifies 45 regulatory changes aimed at saving the struggling industry.
Many of the recommendations focus on changes to regulations and policies related to water access, wildlife
management, slaughter-waste disposal and infrastructure issues
One proposal is for the province to issue financial incentives to beef-cattle producers for achieving a set of high
standards for environmental stewardship, food safety and animal health.
Calling the idea a stimulus program, Baumann said regulatory change will only go so far and the money will help
carry the industry in the short term.
The association would also like to see the province commit $250,000 annually to the Canada Beef
Export Federation, which will match the dollar amount.
Baumann said the money can be used to help open the beef industry to new international markets.
"That's where we can achieve the best bang for the buck," he said.
Baumann said he doesn't expect the government to act on all the recommendations, but he hopes the province will
meet with ranchers for a discussion after the Olympics.
"We're flexible enough to sit down and find a solution," he said.
Steve Thomson said his ministry of agriculture and lands will review the report, but he wouldn't give a timeline for
when some of the recommendations will be addressed.
