WELCOME TO OUT TAKES 2014
This is the 19th annual Out Takes festival and the biggest yet.
Get set to enjoy the best collection of queer films we’ve ever
programmed.
One big change you’ll notice this year is that we’ve introduced
new ticketing arrangements, using Eventfinda for all ticket sales.
Tickets for all Out Takes sessions can be easily booked online
via our new-look website – indeed the cinemas are no longer
handling ticket sales at all. See all the details about the new
system elsewhere in this brochure.
More films were submitted to the festival this year than any
previous year. Nearly 500 submissions came in, and they were all
hotly debated till the last minute. And then an even later minute.
And then right up till the final proof had to be wrested from us and
sent to the printers… so believe us, the selection on offer to you
this year has been whittled down to the very, very best.
And what a year it’s been. Queer cinema worldwide is
achieving levels of quality and diversity that would have been
unimaginable when we started all those years ago. Among the
award-winning films this year are adaptations of popular books
Valencia and Geography Club, as well as The Way He Looks,
a feature-length version of Out Takes 2012’s audience favourite
short I Don’t Want To Go Home Alone.
Along the way, you can travel from the Canadian prairies to the
Swiss Alps, from Hawaiian shores to the Thai countryside, and
enjoy the company of personalities as diverse as Alice Walker and
Johnny Rapid while you’re at it.
How can you resist? There’s plenty to appeal to everyone and
anyone, so grab some friends and enjoy the show!
The Reel Queer team are in Wellington: Simon Fulton, Gavin
Hamilton, Andy Best, Hone McGregor, Kura Barrett, Tabby
Besley, Alex Kondou, George Mapplebeck, Janice Hill, Drew
Hadwen; and in Auckland: Daniel Spragg, Aquila, Elite Chan,
Everall Deans, Jane Hay, Ross Bernay and Chloe Wong.

and Brent are gay but in the closet. Brent
longs for the spotlight, believing that
coming out will make him instantly popular,
while Tanner just hopes to graduate
without ever being noticed. When Tanner
is accidentally outed instead of Brent,
things go crazy pretty quickly. Frothy and
colourful, GBF is chock full of one-liners and
enough glittering teenage homosexiness to

A compelling film documenting the journey
of writer, gardener, and human rights activist
Alice Walker. From small beginnings growing
up in the cotton fields of Georgia, she received
international recognition as the first black
woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for the
groundbreaking novel The Colour Purple. A
self-confessed renegade, Walker has had to deal
with her share of criticism for her disinterest in
submission, her choice of lovers and her choices
in general. Walker’s life unfolds and gives
witness to her struggles, her achievements, her
passions, her hopes for her family and for our
future.

BORN THIS WAY
Dir: Shaun Kadlec & Deb Tullmann, USA, 2012,
85 mins (some French with English subtitles)
More people are imprisoned each year for
homosexuality in Cameroon than in any
other country. Homosexuality is viewed as a
contagious Western import, a form of demon
possession. Here, activists Cédric and Gertrude
dream of coming out to their families. When two
young women in a remote village are arrested
for ‘lesbianism and witchcraft’, brilliant human
rights lawyer Alice Nkom steps in to defend
them. Cédric and Gertrude’s activism becomes
bolder as they work with Alice to help the
women. Lyrical and sobering – a vivid portrait
of life in modern Africa.

same psychiatric hospital back in the 1980s, and
decided to run away together. At the time their
love affair was defined by youthful intensity.
Over 20 years later their lives have taken very
different paths, with nomadic Gloria spending
most of her time drifting between record shops
and bars, while Frances enjoys success as a TV
personality. Can they rekindle their affair?

THE CASE AGAINST 8
Dirs: Ben Cotner & Ryan White, USA, 2013, 109 mins
Paced like an episode of The West Wing, this
gripping documentary gives a candid behindthe-scenes look at the legal fight to overturn
California’s ban on same-sex marriage. Using
classic battle tactics from Sun Tzu’s The Art
of War, two traditional legal foes pair up to
support gay marriage. It took five years, and
two queer couples being steadfast in the face
of death threats, to win this battle in the US
Supreme Court.
For LGBTI voters here The Case Against 8
shows what determined people-power can
achieve in democratic societies.

Cherry chronicles the troubled journey of a
young woman through San Francisco’s fetish
pornography industry. Escaping a tumultuous
family home filled with alcohol and physical

not long before she meets Frances, a cocaine
addicted lawyer who introduces her to a lavish

helps Angelina, now known as Cherry, launch
her adult film career. And it’s soon obvious

When a young drifter, Martin, turns up at
writer Eugenio’s house in the country and they
recognise each other as childhood playmates,
Eugenio offers him work for the summer and
a sensual game of power and desire begins.
As they get to know each other and share
increasingly intimate moments, their mutual
attraction and Eugenio’s reticence build an
almost unbearable erotic tension, for them and

out to do just that, called the result Boys in
the Sand, and became an overnight sensation.
Queer erotica would never be the same. Packed
with archival footage, entertaining interviews,
and excerpts from his films, this is the story of
an outspoken artist in turbulent times.

Florian’s mother, leaving father and son to cope
in each other’s company. But when Florian
meets his father’s young Romanian diving
student, a tentative adolescent romance begins.

MY PRAIRIE HOME
Dir: Chelsea McMullan, Canada, 2013, 76 mins
Canadian transgender performer Rae Spoon
is a kind of indie troubadour, travelling long
distances across the wild open spaces of
Canada to perform. Spoon revisits the stretches
of rural Alberta that once constituted ‘home’
and confronts memories of growing up queer in
an abusive, evangelical household. This genredefying blend of documentary, musical and
road movie segues into fantastical performance
sequences in which Spoon sings of childhood,
the prairie, death, dinosaurs, the Rapture, gender
exploration, and high school romance. An utterly
unforgettable experience – and discovering Rae
Spoon is this film’s biggest reward.

enough for the choreographer, while company
veteran Todd is both smoulderingly masculine
and more sexually adventurous. Fear of the
recently-named AIDS virus is palpable; nobody
knew for certain how the disease spread, and
dancers feared touching each other. As Frankie

comes to life in this fun, collaborative

itself and will make you fall in love with the 90s

works in a male stripper revue in NYC. Anthony
envisions his big break when he enters a contest

company, and wouldn’t you know it but their
submissions get mixed up….
